Every room offers spectacular views with balconies to watch birds and monkeys and the amazing flora of the tropics. Bedrooms are large, furnished with classy native wood furniture and high quality linens. The sound of crashing waves will lull you to sleep and you will be surprised by the unique sounds of visiting troops of howler monkeys on the surrounding trees.

Vacation in the progressive community of Balcones de Majagual, 30 miles from the Costa Rican border and located in the lush Pacific coastal region, nestled amongst abundant flora and fauna on rolling hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean 12 km north of San Juan Del Sur. Experience seclusion and privacy amidst an exotic landscape steps from the beach. We have monkeys, sea turtles, surf breaks, hiking, kayaking, sunsets, quiet, tropical forests, and especially beaches. Yet, our proximity to the lively beach town of San Juan del Sur allows for markets, restaurants, bars and entertainment.

We are dedicated to both preserving and enjoying this special part of the world. We are challenged by the issues of living responsibly within our ecosystem and dedicated to exploring progressive architecture and alternative energy with an unyielding respect for the local environment.

4WD is recommended on the roads outside San Juan del Sur and within our community. Hot water via solar power and battery backup to keep the refrigerator cold when the Nicaraguan power grid is down is provided. The house has WIFI internet, and includes cleaning service and 24 hour security.

We do not recommend this house for families with toddlers.

Balcones at Majagual is an ecological retreat in the jungle about 7 miles north of San Juan del Sur. Monkeys and parrots are our main wildlife - and will visit your home every day. Our neighborhood has beachfront on the small beach between Playa Maderas and Playa Majagual - great for swimming, sun bathing and surfing.

4 wheel drive is recommended to access the areas between Balcones at Majagual and San Juan del Sur - about 7 miles on a dirt road, which usually takes about half hour to drive.

Other Activities: zip-line through jungle canopy, bird watching, exploring jungle, surfing, shopping, kayaking, boating

Felt like we had the country to ourselves

Casa La Serena truly is a peaceful place to relax and savor the peaceful beauty of the Nicaraguan coast. Except for the hairy neighbors who dragged by every day to enjoy the berries of the magnificent tree in the courtyard, we felt like we had the countryside to ourselves. The house is well appointed and met all our needs. Though there is little reason to leave this tranquil spot other than swim in the beautiful beaches, we particularly enjoyed the sail with Nica Sailing (Zac) and the scenery high up in the canopy on Da Flying Frog Zip Line was also great fun. My favorite moments at the house weere spent on the deck reading "The Country under my Skin". What a remarkable story. Muchas gracias por todo.

Sad to leave

Just finished our month long honeymoon in Casa La Serena and are sad to leave. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be back. The quiet peaceful serenity of Casa La Serena helped make this a nice relaxing vacation which was exactly what we wanted.
All the staff of the house were great and were always there to help with whatever we needed. We will be recommending this place to others who are looking to unwind.

Great Stay

We had a great stay here and enjoyed relaxing, soaking up the gorgeous views and also exploring on the nearby roads and beaches! The house couldn't have been better...all the staff, the pool, the oper air concept, the crabs and, of course, the monkeys in the trees!

Casa La Serena was the perfect place to come for the first half of our honeymoon and we hope to come back!

How to describe it?

One word: WOW!!! (is it a word?)

We had the craziest experience ever! Everything awesome about the place. The surrounding nature with the birds, iguanas and, of course, MONKEYS....The sunset.
So, yes, heaven does exist and it's right here!!! Thank you for everything Nicaragua.

Lovely treehouse but did not deliver on promised amenities

Just returned from a weeks stay at Casa La Serena. The home is a lovely jungle treehouse with a layout that afforded wonderful privacy for two couples. The beautiful sunsets and monkeys sounding the daily wakeup calls were a unique experience. We stayed during the holiday and were assessed the holiday premium price expecting all the amenities listed in the write up. On our first day we discovered there wasn't any hot water and promptly informed the property management company. Nothing was resolved. The neighboring house allowed us to use their shower for three nights at the end of our stay, but four days of cold showers took some of the magic out of our stay.
Recommended for:  Adventure Seekers, Families with Teenagers, Romantic Getaway
Owner's Response: Casa La Serena has a solar panel to heat the water in the house, and it also has a back up gas system, in case there's not enough sun during the rainy months. Unfortunately BOTH systems failed during your stay and bcause it happened during the Xmas holidays, it became very hard to fix the problem as fast as we would have liked. We apologize very much and will make sure it doesn't happen again. Thank you.
