Vacation in the progressive community of Balcones de Majagual, 30 miles from the Costa Rican border and located in the lush Pacific coastal region, nestled amongst abundant flora and fauna on rolling hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean 12 km north of San Juan Del Sur. Experience seclusion and privacy amidst an exotic landscape steps from the beach. We have monkeys, sea turtles, surf breaks, hiking, kayaking, sunsets, quiet, tropical forests, and especially beaches. Yet, our proximity to the lively beach town of San Juan del Sur allows for markets, restaurants, bars and entertainment.
We are dedicated to both preserving and enjoying this special part of the world. We are challenged by the issues of living responsibly within our ecosystem and dedicated to exploring progressive architecture and alternative energy with an unyielding respect for the local environment.
4WD is recommended on the roads outside San Juan del Sur and within our community. Hot water via solar power and battery backup to keep the refrigerator cold when the Nicaraguan power grid is down is provided. The house has WIFI internet, and includes cleaning service and 24 hour security.
We do not recommend this house for families with toddlers.
Many reviews posted here are written on a guest book at Casa La Serena. We thank every one who writes their impressions and shares with us and future renters their experiences and joys at the house, and also the problems or improvements they would like to see. Thank you all.

Our stay at Casa La Serena was a true escape and complete juxstaposition from the energy that came from SJDS. The support from Gabby, Laura and Shayla coudln't have been more helpful, from answering our pre visit questions, to taking us for a tour of San Juan, to helping us get familar with the lay of the land. If you plan on staying at Balcones for a few days be sure to stock up bc the drive back to town can take time away from your planned R&R. If you enjoy fresh seafood be sure to pick up some from fish/shrimp/lobster etc from the fish market at the pier in town.
At Casa La Serena you will be immersed in the sound of slience so be prepared to slow down, shift into neutral and enjoy alot of R&R. The howler monkeys will remind every morning not to sleep in too late and that as much as you may think you are alone you aren't. There is a little establishment called Matildas on the beach near by where you can purchase some cold refreshments and a freshly prepared lunch if you need to recharge, or just enjoy sun and sand (Dont expect a 5 star restaurant, but a true Nicaraguan experience!!) If you want to spoil yourselves even more than you have up to this point ask about purchasing a day pass to Morgans Rock. They have a great restaurant, infiniti pool overlooking the ocean, we had the beach to ourselves (although most beaches in Nica are often like that) They have handfull of tours you can book so check out what they have to offer.
There wasnt much to complain about, all in all you cant control the nature that will surround you on your stay but isnt that why you are booking this place?!! to immerse yourself into a suspended state of relaxtion and to be one with nature!! (don't panic the scorpions aren't lethal)....In the end enjoy relaxing in the infinti pool with a cold Tona as you watch the Sun Set over the ocean..what more can you ask for...
Had a great stay during the month of November. I wish I had more time to write a more thorough review, but I'm back at work and missing Casa La Serena. Staff was great, house was great, and Town was Great.
My husband and I loved this house, property and location. It's incredibly decadent yet rustic at the same time. The view from the pool and bedrooms is ridiculous and so are the sunsets every night. We loved the "nature" feel of the place with howler monkeys waking you up sometimes in the middle of the night, birds making all kinds of cool noises and ocean breezes coming right through the screened bedroom "walls" -- nothing like it. We were surprised there weren't more bugs - we didn't see a single mosquito. We did, however, see and kill (sorry) a scorpion! We had lots of possums visiting as well. The walk to the beach is super easy and we hiked up two or three beaches north which were quiet and beautiful (the beaches south are more crowded and not as pretty). The kitchen has everything you need, and the bedrooms & bathrooms are sooooo funky, gorgeous and earthy all at the same time. Gabby was also first rate helping us get food and sharing her local knowledge. We'd come back in a heartbeat!
I cannot recommend this rental property enough. Our experience was absolutely amazing. My husband and I rented this house for 10 days for our honeymoon. Laura, Gabby and Shayla were fabulous with answering all of my (many) questions so that we knew what to expect upon our arrival to Nicaragua.
We rented a private, round trip, shuttle through Iskra Travel from Managua to San Juan Del Sur. They dropped us off at Dollar Rental where we rented our extremely nice truck for the week. Then we headed to the office to meet Shayla. She showed us around town and took us to the fish market, specialty market and Pali grocery store. Shayla then drove us out to the property and told us everything we needed to know about the property and the town. The fish market is exceptional and you can buy fresh Dorado for $3/lb, amazing! We are so grateful for Shayla and her tour, as we would have been lost without her.
We ended up cooking most nights because there aren't many good reasons to leave the house. The house is gorgeous with a spectacular view. The house was clean, comfortable and just as pictured on VRBO. There were people who came to clean the pool daily and maintain the plants. We only asked to have the house cleaned once because anything more seemed unnecessary. The house is about a 4 minute drive from the beach and we suggest driving it because it is so much easier, especially with chairs and a surf board! The beach is gorgeous with almost no one on it (doesn't get much better than that). Lunch at Juanita's Kitchen was delicious as was the taco place on Maderas. We did the catamaran sale with Nica Surf and Sail and had a BLAST. We also hired a fishing charter through Hotel Gran Oceano and would highly recommend them. We caught 6 tuna and made fresh ceviche for supper that night. We thoroughly enjoyed having cocktails in the pool and watching the sun set.
I want to stress how safe we felt during our trip. We only stayed in town past dark once so we really weren't pushing it. But I read lots of things about how "unsafe" Nicaragua is, etc. and it made me nervous about our trip. We felt totally opposite, safe.
Overall, again, I cannot say enough wonderful things about our trip. If you are even half way on the fence about going, DO IT! This is the only trip I have ever taken where I have genuinely missed it since returning home. AMAZING!
Beautiful scenery, relaxing atmosphere, a sparkling pool and a show from the howler monkeys were the highlights of our stay at Casa la Serena. We rented a 4 x 4 for the week and enjoyed the adventure of trips into town and visits to some outstanding beaches. Gabriela gave us a tour around SJDS which helped us immensely is locating the services we required. The home was well equipped and the staff were friendly and respectful. I would definitely recommend this location for anyone looking for some R & R with a twist of out of the ordinary.
We had the most incredible time at Casa La Serena. It was the perfect place to spend our honeymoon. Although it may have been mostly due to the fact that it was rainy season, at times we felt like we were the only people for miles and had this amazing jungle all to ourselves. The home is absolutely stunning and the pool is perfect. We saw so many creatures, spiders (only one scary one who scurried away as quickly as we spotted him), a preying mantis, scorpions, iguanas, geckos, and the monkeys, which were quite eerie to listen to at first. We were worried we might be stuck in thunderstorms the entire week, but everyday was hot, sunny and humid and the torrential rains at night were a welcome break and lovely to fall asleep to. I enjoyed reading The Country Under My Skin while here and came away inspired. We absolutely loved our time here and hope to return. There is so much more of this beautiful country to explore. Although the roads to Casa la Serena were treacherous, it was part of an incredible adventure. It was a surprise to run into Charlie and the architect who designed Balcones in the forest on our hike to Playa Majagual. Lovely to meet them!
Muchos gracias & hasta luego!
Balcones at Majagual is an ecological retreat in the jungle about 7 miles north of San Juan del Sur. Monkeys and parrots are our main wildlife - and will visit your home every day. Our neighborhood has beachfront on the small beach between Playa Maderas and Playa Majagual - great for swimming, sun bathing and surfing.
4 wheel drive is recommended to access the areas between Balcones at Majagual and San Juan del Sur - about 7 miles on a dirt road, which usually takes about half hour to drive.
Other Activities: zip-line through jungle canopy, bird watching, exploring jungle, surfing, shopping, kayaking, boating
