June 9 -12 2012 was the third visit for my fiend Bob & I. We started in 2010 – see my review “Cabin or Cottage?” 06/26/2010 – and looked forward to returning each year. This year I brought my 5.5 year old grandson. This was our first overnight experience together and I am happy to say we both ‘survived.’ The in cabin Dish TV helped two old guys temper the boundless energy of this boy for part of the time. But it was the fishing bug that secured his eternal(?) interest in fishing, and returning to Fish Inn. He caught 7 fish in two days on Hat Creek. I was shocked, amazed and thrilled. My friend & I and I have never had more fun fishing without wetting a line, or our pants. Joann & Ray are great people and have just the right sense for how much external attention their guest desire. The cabin is flawless and maintained in an impeccable manner. You will not be disappointed when spending a few days at Fish Inn.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children.
If you are looking for a great place on Hat Creek, this is the spot. Very accommodating hosts and a well outfitted cabin. Highly recommend!
We rented the cabin for a week in early September. I second what everyone else has said. Joann and Ray are nice, helpful, and very accommodating. The fans worked well to keep it cool during the day, and we really didn't need an air conditioner. The kitchen, in particular, is large and well-stocked with everything needed to prepare a full meal. We're from Southern California and very much appreciated the creek behind the property. In spite of California's water woes, it runs year round, fed by an underground spring. If I wanted to be picky, I suppose I could mention the temperamental toilet. But when there was a small problem Ray came by immediately and took care of it (with a smile, I might add). I just loved this cabin and it's more than reasonably priced for what you get.
Our family had booked a few days at the Fish inn for this week. Unfortunately, we had to cancel due to the recent fire . Although the area directly around the Fish Inn was not affected, there were several other areas we planned to visit that
were adversely compromised. Joann was more than accommodating and permitted us to cancel our reservation. She was quite understanding and very professional . We fully plan on staying at their lovely home the next time we are planning a trip in the area.
We came up July 2nd and stayed through the 4th - it was hot (~90), but the cabin stayed relatively cool during the day especially with the ceiling fans going. Fortunately the mornings and evenings cooled down so we could open the windows to enjoy the night air.
The Fish Inn is in a great location a few hundred yards from Hat Creek, close to campgrounds, Subway caves, volcanic wonders, and of course fishing! The cabin is very well equipped with linens, dishes, pots, pans, glassware, utensils, etc. Ray and Joann are superb hosts, very personable, and available if you need anything or if somethig goes awry (fortunately nothing went awry for us!).
Here's the best part about the Fish Inn -it's pet friendly. And I'm not just talking about your average 80lb and under dog. This is the place for large dogs. We own two English Mastiffs and lodging with them is difficult because most places that claim to be pet friendly have a weight limit, usually no more than 80 pounds. We chatted with Ray and Joann on the front porch with our dogs laying comfortably on the deck and looking very regal. Ray and Joann didn't even bat an eyelash with our two large dogs being there.
The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because it was hot (understandably so for July) and the master bedroom doesn't have a ceiling fan. The window faces east, so it doesn't get the cool afternoon/evening breezes like the living room or other bedroom. It does have a portable fan which my husband rummaged out of the closet to cool us down. Despite the heat, we'd definately come back for a future visits - we're even thinking of coming in early November for our anniversary.
Thank you for providing a wonderful, central location Ray and Joann.
My husband and I arrived at the Fish Inn on our 36th wedding anniversary. We were hot and tired from the drive and did not want to cook that night. Ray and Joann came over and introduced themselves and directed us to a nice, low-key restaurant in Burney. We had an excellent dinner and headed back to the Fish Inn for a few days of R & R. Each morning, while my husband tried to catch the 'big one' in Hat Creek, I would sit out on the front porch with my coffee and crossword puzzle book. I cannot tell you how relaxing it was to see the hummingbirds flitting around as well as listen to the breeze rustling through the pine trees. We toured all around, visited the various sites, but Burney Falls was our favorite place of all. Another thing we enjoyed was the Subway Tube, but be sure to bring a bright flashlight and wear good shoes as the bottom is very, very rocky. (You can purchase them at a nearby gas station) We loved our stay and enjoyed our relaxing time very much. Ray and Joann are excellent hosts and we would love to stay there again sometime soon. Unfortunately, my husband did not catch any fish, but not for lack of trying!
The property is clean, well stocked, close to all local outdoor activities, and the owners couldn't be more helpful. We enjoyed ourselves and would recommend this rental to everyone.
