Great location

Positive:
Location next to Connemara national park with lots of beautiful walks and coast around. The house was always warm and cosy. The owner Anne had pigs wandering around which was fantastic for the kids. She also gave the kids a few ride on ponys which was another bonus.

Negative:
Communication was very bad and confirmation needed to be chased several times. The kitchen is missing a few more spoons and glasses for a party 8+. Also it lacks essential tools for baking and cooking (i.e scale, blender, good knifes, chopping boards).
Owner's Response: We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Heatherhill Cottages in our great value (€450 per week) accommodation for 9 people in the heart of beautiful Connemara. It is a great place for families and children and we try to improve the experience for our holiday makers with our animals and allowing children to interact with them.
As we are a rural location our internet connection is not always great as we have only one internet service provider in the area.
We are upgrading and adding to the houses this winter and will include all equipment for baking in our up-grade.

Rustic Family Getaway

The Heatherhill Cottage in Letterfrack was the perfect getaway for our large family group. Its situation next to the Connemara National Park makes it ideal for hiking. It is also close enough to the village to be able to enjoy a pint in one of the pubs & amble home. The home is basic but comfortable with a wonderful open fire and cosy lounge room. Kitchen is well-equipped to cater for big groups. The house slept 10 comfortably with lovely views onto the Connemara landscape from most rooms. Fabulous towns of Westport & Clifden only short drives away. There is so much to do & see in the area we hope to get back there next time we come to Ireland!

A disgusting, overpriced disappointment!

It got 1 star because site wouldn't allow none!
We have never been so disappointed in holiday accommodation. It was a pigsty but the pig which was rooting in what passed for a garden would have been ashamed to call this cottage home.
The downstairs shower-room and toilet was disgusting. The dim light just about showed up the black mould on the shower-curtain and around the basin. Light also showed the rust on the radiator and the shower-curtain pole. The toilet seat was ill-fitting and moved when used. The whole room smelled of damp, which the week and noisy fan did little to dispel. We had to request that towels were given to us, despite having paid for these in addition to the rent. We were initially given one towel each, and no bathmats. The towels were old, threadbare and mismatched.
Our bedroom door had to be jammed shut as there was no means of shutting it properly. The curtains were old and ill-fitted with at least a foot of hem hanging down from one, making whole room appear squalid and uncared for.
The lounge was ridiculously small for the number of people staying here and the furniture was circa 1970.
Throughout the house, some lamps did not have working bulbs and indeed some lamps had no bulbs at all.
The wooden floorboards and lack of sound insulation, throughout the house, meant that every footstep could be heard by everyone.
The kitchen was, perhaps, the worst equipped room in the house. The utensils that were there were either broken, rusty, dirty or blunt. This kitchen lacked the most basic of utensils, e.g. a sharp knife, wooden spoon, colander. The ancient cooker was extremely inefficient, which meant cooking was both frustrating and slow.
We were “allowed” 5 hours of heating per day. If we wanted more we had to pay for it. The electricity was by pre-payment meter, which we found extremely galling, given the high rental charged for this appalling property.
The apparently home-made speed bumps on the road in the grounds caused damage to underside of car when travelling with more than 2 people in the car, no matter how slowly one drove.
Despite this property’s ideal location near the Connemara National Park, it has absolutely nothing else to commend it. Avoid the place at all costs!
Owner's Response: Dear John,
you are a tenant to avoid at all costs - you over-crowded the house and turned the heating on constant and left the windows open as obviously the place must have been baking - as it was the middle of the summer.
We did not say much at the time which in hind sight was a poor decision which we regretted the moment we saw the house on your departure. You and your large group are not welcome back here again,

Stayed here in July 2011. 5 Adults, 4 small Children & 3 dogs. House includes all the amenities including washing machine, tumble drier and dish washer as well as Wi Fi. and was close to the shop & pubs. Downstairs play room/pet room perfect for kids to play.
The Location was excellent for touring around and sight seeing. Beaches were clean and sandy.
Great, fast communications with Owner who lives nearby. Highly recommended. We loved the cottage and the connemara area.

Our holiday at Heatherhill

This turned out to be perfect for our family. We have 3 children and the amount of safe playing area was great. Our 9 year old recommends the go karts, building cubby houses in the trees, blackberry picking and the playground at the nat.park.For us the easy access to endless walking trails in the area was a highlight . A foodstore 2mins walk away turned out to be a practical bonus, also the fact that the house had lots of room turned out to be important on wet days.I would easily recommend it for any family looking for an active, outdoor holiday with a spacious, comfy house to retreat to.We had a great time !!

Letterfrack is a small but lively village overlooked by the Diamond mountain in the most beautiful part of unspoilt Connemara. The cottage is ideally located beside mountains and sea offering great hillwalking and crystal clear sea and white sands. After a days activity or sight seeing it is a short stroll to the village for a drink and a meal in one of three pubs or restaurants and to catch abit of traditional music. Connemara National Park is also based in Letterfrack village a few minutes walk from the house. There is a walkers path all the way to the top of diamond Mountain (one of the 12 Bens) which offers great views out to sea and over to Mayo. There is an interpretive centre and tearoom at the base of the mountain walk and this is also the starting point of other walks. Boat trips can be taken from the pier in Letterfrack.

Other Activities: Dive center and adventure center nearby.
