This property is truly one of a kind in Taos-perhaps anywhere. The main house is a wonderful old adobe on two pastoral acres down a country road surrounded by trees, lawns and gardens just across the Road from the Rio Pueblo. It has a remote and private feel and yet is less than two minutes from the Plaza and 30 minutes from world class skiing. You are entertained by stars and coyotes at night, roosters, the neighbors' donkey and church bells in the morning and birds all day long. The house is the true essence of southwest decor. The walls have a soft, buttermilk/beeswax sheen. Dark beamed ceilings and wood floors throughout are complimented by antique furnishings, native rugs, original art and many amazing and creative touches. It is a small home, perfect for a couple although it does have a second bedroom with its own private bath.
Enter from the covered portal into a kitchen fully equipped for all your cooking needs. If I don't have it, you probably don't need it! You will enjoy cooking on my 1949 O'Keefe & Merritt gas stove The living room is warm and inviting. A gas log stove in the corner provides central heat, but the wood burning kiva fireplace sets the tone. Ample firewood is located in a wood box just outside the kitchen door. There is an extensive DVD video library and numerous CDs. All you need for a quiet evening at home. In fact most guests spend more time here relaxing than they do out adventuring. The master bedroom has another kiva fireplace and an antique brass and iron queen size bed with down comforters and lots of pillows and good bedside reading lights. The large walk in closet opens to a hot tub under an 80' elm tree. There two full bathrooms in the home One has a deep tub and an array of candles. The second bedroom has an antique double iron bed and original art.
The outdoor patio is furnished with teak garden furniture, a fireplace and bbq grill. The yard is enchanting even in winter. Towering cottonwood trees line one side of the property above the numerous out buildings. There is a large lawn and an orchard of mature apple, apricot, plum and pear trees. The many garden beds were lovingly planted by the owner ( a professional landscaper) and are surrounded by many tall trees and a flowing acequia.
This property was once the home of Taos writer John Nichols of 'Milagro Beanfield War' fame which was written in what is now a two room guest casita (Also available for additional guests) However, this property is described in virtually all of John's books both fiction and non fiction in great detail. John is a friend and still lives nearby.
There are fun and fanciful touches to delight throughout the property from the turquoise Willy's planter truck in the front pasture to the Mardi Gras beads flung in the trees, the whimsical gardens and the outdoor art everywhere. The two story tree house (sleeps 4) in the orchard is so special, the greenhouse is an oasis in the winter and the 1971 Airstream trailer (sleeps 3) in the back pasture is just plain fun. There are also two small cottages and an awesome workshop.
The property has two very different aspects (in keeping with the Gemini owner). A cozy romantic winter retreat with summer possibilities of an entire compound which can sleep up to 15 guests and is perfect for small weddings, seminars, retreats, reunions and art workshops. I can offer a B&B service or cater meals. My downtown shop is a flower shop and we can do a wonderful floral arrangement and have it waiting for your arrival. We also do 'Welcome' baskets. Contact me for additional information/prices
(Please contact me for summer rates and details.
***Please note that when you rent the main house, the whole two acre property is your and I do not rent out any of the other spaces during your stay. Something guests love so much about my home is the privacy.
This property has appeared in Enchanted Homes, New Mexico Magazine and Green New Mexico. It was also featured on the Taos Home and Garden tour.
It must be seen to be believed. It is truly magical.

I was a landscaper in Marin Co. California and was ready for a change of pace and place. I found my house on my birthday - June 21. It was love at first sight. The property is so special the variety, the quiet, the trees and flowers, the other buildings and the proximity to town. It is just plain perfect.
Melissa Serfling purchased this house in 2005
I grew up in the Southwest and even though I loved many things about the Bay Area, I missed seasons, mountains, turquoise skies and thunderstorms.
Peace and quiet with good proximity to town, comfortable and cozy and so many fun things to see.
Melissa, I found this rock on the trail while hiking into the
Gorge yesterday. It made me think of you and your awesome style! You inspire!!
My wife and I stayed in this very interesting and unique spot with our son and daughter-in-law and our two grandkids for a week in the summer of 2014 and loved every minute! The weather was grand, even though it was monsoon season in Taos. The dry air - warm in the afternoon and cool at night - was a welcome respite from the summer heat and humidity back home. The passing showers were no problem and were awesome to see coming across the plains in the distance. We stayed in the main adobe house, which was great - very homey and comfortable - but loved the compound with all its artsy artifacts, trees and flowers and all the outbuildings, especially the tree house, too! We slept there several nights with the grandkids and had a ball - especially during the thunderstorms! The location is great - close to Taos, but still rural and secluded. It was a wonderful, relaxing week. We love Taos in the summer and hope to go back again!
My family of four, my father and his wife, and our dog stayed at Melissa's rental last summer. The property is awesome with a main house and several additional cabins on the property.
Our kids loved the Tree House & my daughter and I had a slept in the loft bed of the tree house almost every night- even in the rain! The sound of the rain on the Tree House's tin roof was soothing and the time with my daughter is a fantastic memory. The kids also loved the Airstream Trailer on the back edge of the property.
The main house had all the amenities of home- it doesn't feel like a rental at all. It almost feels like your Aunt had invited you to stay at her house while she went out of town. So many rentals lack the coziness and warm feeling that Melissa's properties exude. The master bath en suite was nice for privacy and has all the modern touches even though the adobe feels "historic." We loved making fires in the kiva fireplace in the living room and watching the summer storms roll into town. The main house also has DirecTV and dvd for those who still need access to the news, sports and movie night.
The kitchen has everything you need and has wonderful tin top counters, a renovated O'Keefe & Merrit Stove and a fully stocked pantry. A Taos author lived in the house prior to Melissa and it was neat sitting at the rustic kitchen table drinking a cocktail and thinking about the history of the house.
The house has WiFi for those who want to stay in touch with the news or keep up with work email. We found ourselves sitting on the nice patio with a fire blazing in the outdoor fireplace every evening for family happy hour.
The house is also pet friendly and the property provided great space for our dog and kids to run around.
I can also not say enough positive things about Melissa. She goes above and beyond to make your stay awesome- whether it's having her guys stop by to take the trash, deliver new wood or help with recommendations for activities and nearby restaurants. She is one of the main reasons we are considering a second home in Taos. Rent from Melissa and you will not be disappointed.
The only "negative" that I can think of is that the house does not have a dishwasher or washer & dryer. This might not be a big deal to most people but just wanted to point that out.
Thanks again for the awesome stay!
Our family of four had a wonderful stay at Melissa's magical property. While it was Spring Break and a little soggy from the rain, I saw the potential beauty of the yard and garden when Spring arrives. The house and amenities were very cozy and comfortable. I vow to return in a warmer month!
We had a wonderful vacation... everything was perfect. Beyond my expectations. I will definitely be back!
During a ski vacation our family stayed in this enchanting home--during the biggest snowfall of the year. We got caught up with the fireplaces, hot tub, cushy robes, a well stocked kitchen, and the overall warming comfort of Melissa's home filled with personal touches. Dana, the caretaker, shoveled snow for us in the morning and provided seasoned firewood for a month. This creates the perfect getaway for romance or for a family. The tree house is mouth dropping, sleeping four, the casita across from the main house, spacious and perfect for kids. I'm a cook, so I loved the Chambers gas stove and made cast iron pan seared filet mignons. We will be back and are spreading the word! Thank you, Melissa, for being a true hostess.
We were lucky enough to have our first married VAlentines weekend, and first trip to Taos, in this magical place. It was so much more than we could have ever expected!!! The house and property are amazing, so many places to explore and check out- you could easily stay here with several people and enjoy to common areas, while all having your own place to sleep and have privacy. The treehouse made for the best nap ever, the birds are so unique and beautiful- their chirping was so serene among the trees.
We were there for snowboarding, and had a quick trip to the mountain. After we relaxed our tired muscles in the hot tub under the stars, even saw a shooting star. In the morning we sat with coffee by the fire or in the hot tub, it was just amazing. There are not enough words to describe the hospitality, beauty, and serenity we experienced this weekend. We will definitely be back!!!!
If you are looking for total privacy in a rural setting, yet a 10 minute walk to town or -2 minute drive, this is the home for you... An amazing 'Truly Taos' home
