Taos House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-4)

This property is truly one of a kind in Taos-perhaps anywhere. The main house is a wonderful old adobe on two pastoral acres down a country road surrounded by trees, lawns and gardens just across the Road from the Rio Pueblo. It has a remote and private feel and yet is less than two minutes from the Plaza and 30 minutes from world class skiing. You are entertained by stars and coyotes at night, roosters, the neighbors' donkey and church bells in the morning and birds all day long. The house is the true essence of southwest decor. The walls have a soft, buttermilk/beeswax sheen. Dark beamed ceilings and wood floors throughout are complimented by antique furnishings, native rugs, original art and many amazing and creative touches. It is a small home, perfect for a couple although it does have a second bedroom with its own private bath.

Enter from the covered portal into a kitchen fully equipped for all your cooking needs. If I don't have it, you probably don't need it! You will enjoy cooking on my 1949 O'Keefe & Merritt gas stove The living room is warm and inviting. A gas log stove in the corner provides central heat, but the wood burning kiva fireplace sets the tone. Ample firewood is located in a wood box just outside the kitchen door. There is an extensive DVD video library and numerous CDs. All you need for a quiet evening at home. In fact most guests spend more time here relaxing than they do out adventuring. The master bedroom has another kiva fireplace and an antique brass and iron queen size bed with down comforters and lots of pillows and good bedside reading lights. The large walk in closet opens to a hot tub under an 80' elm tree. There two full bathrooms in the home One has a deep tub and an array of candles. The second bedroom has an antique double iron bed and original art.

The outdoor patio is furnished with teak garden furniture, a fireplace and bbq grill. The yard is enchanting even in winter. Towering cottonwood trees line one side of the property above the numerous out buildings. There is a large lawn and an orchard of mature apple, apricot, plum and pear trees. The many garden beds were lovingly planted by the owner ( a professional landscaper) and are surrounded by many tall trees and a flowing acequia.

This property was once the home of Taos writer John Nichols of 'Milagro Beanfield War' fame which was written in what is now a two room guest casita (Also available for additional guests) However, this property is described in virtually all of John's books both fiction and non fiction in great detail. John is a friend and still lives nearby.

There are fun and fanciful touches to delight throughout the property from the turquoise Willy's planter truck in the front pasture to the Mardi Gras beads flung in the trees, the whimsical gardens and the outdoor art everywhere. The two story tree house (sleeps 4) in the orchard is so special, the greenhouse is an oasis in the winter and the 1971 Airstream trailer (sleeps 3) in the back pasture is just plain fun. There are also two small cottages and an awesome workshop.

The property has two very different aspects (in keeping with the Gemini owner). A cozy romantic winter retreat with summer possibilities of an entire compound which can sleep up to 15 guests and is perfect for small weddings, seminars, retreats, reunions and art workshops. I can offer a B&B service or cater meals. My downtown shop is a flower shop and we can do a wonderful floral arrangement and have it waiting for your arrival. We also do 'Welcome' baskets. Contact me for additional information/prices

(Please contact me for summer rates and details.

***Please note that when you rent the main house, the whole two acre property is your and I do not rent out any of the other spaces during your stay. Something guests love so much about my home is the privacy.

This property has appeared in Enchanted Homes, New Mexico Magazine and Green New Mexico. It was also featured on the Taos Home and Garden tour.

It must be seen to be believed. It is truly magical.

About Melissa Serfling

I was a landscaper in Marin Co. California and was ready for a change of pace and place. I found my house on my birthday - June 21. It was love at first sight. The property is so special the variety, the quiet, the trees and flowers, the other buildings and the proximity to town. It is just plain perfect.

Melissa Serfling purchased this house in 2005

Why Melissa Serfling chose Taos

I grew up in the Southwest and even though I loved many things about the Bay Area, I missed seasons, mountains, turquoise skies and thunderstorms.

What makes this house unique

Peace and quiet with good proximity to town, comfortable and cozy and so many fun things to see.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Gorge yesterday. It made me think of you and your awesome style! You inspire!!

Wonderful Stay in Taos!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had a wonderful stay at Melissa's magical property. While it was Spring Break and a little soggy from the rain, I saw the potential beauty of the yard and garden when Spring arrives. The house and amenities were very cozy and comfortable. I vow to return in a warmer month!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review! Yes spring break was soggy, but all that rain is SO good for my lawns, gardens and trees. You are right. Magical in the rain heralds spectacular in summer and fall. Do come back when lawn is green, everything is blooming, all those big shade trees and a ridiculous number of container plants flowering everywhere! If it holds soil, it's a container. I just can't help myself... This house is always cozy, comfortable and inviting no matter the season and the hot tub under the elm is always so popular.

Charming Magic

  • 5 of 5

During a ski vacation our family stayed in this enchanting home--during the biggest snowfall of the year. We got caught up with the fireplaces, hot tub, cushy robes, a well stocked kitchen, and the overall warming comfort of Melissa's home filled with personal touches. Dana, the caretaker, shoveled snow for us in the morning and provided seasoned firewood for a month. This creates the perfect getaway for romance or for a family. The tree house is mouth dropping, sleeping four, the casita across from the main house, spacious and perfect for kids. I'm a cook, so I loved the Chambers gas stove and made cast iron pan seared filet mignons. We will be back and are spreading the word! Thank you, Melissa, for being a true hostess.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review and so glad you enjoyed my home with your family. It is indeed an enchanting home and so very popular. It has a cozy old Taos feeling I know and is comfortable and full of my personal touches. I'm glad you appreciated the fireplaces, the cushy robes and of course the hot tub under the stars. I try to stock my kitchen with all the supplies and staples guests need to cook at home. The kitchen stove is actually an O'Keefe and Merritt, vintage 1949 and a real vintage treasure. Glad you checked out everything on the property and enjoyed the two story tree house and the little casita on the property. It was the original house and is over 200 years old, but cozy and friendly as an additional bedroom/s space. Thanks for commenting about my hostess skills. I love sharing all my nine Taos properties and interacting with my guests and giving suggestions of all things Taos. Your husband's wedding ring is in the mail to you. I insured it. Tell him not to take it off again. He might not be so lucky next time and get it back. We have my house keeper to thank for finding it. Please come back for another visit. You can only imagine how magical this property is in the summer--a riot of flowers and all those shade trees and the big lawn...

romance and relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We were lucky enough to have our first married VAlentines weekend, and first trip to Taos, in this magical place. It was so much more than we could have ever expected!!! The house and property are amazing, so many places to explore and check out- you could easily stay here with several people and enjoy to common areas, while all having your own place to sleep and have privacy. The treehouse made for the best nap ever, the birds are so unique and beautiful- their chirping was so serene among the trees.

We were there for snowboarding, and had a quick trip to the mountain. After we relaxed our tired muscles in the hot tub under the stars, even saw a shooting star. In the morning we sat with coffee by the fire or in the hot tub, it was just amazing. There are not enough words to describe the hospitality, beauty, and serenity we experienced this weekend. We will definitely be back!!!!

We highly recommend this Taos gem to anyone who wants a true good get away. We really enjoy the house so much that it is our place to stay when we go to Taos, which is often. We discovered this high desert gem just this last fall and enjoyed watching the seasonal colors. The property itself is very unique with it's many charming rooms and tree house that would be a child's dream come true. We really enjoy the hot tub and watching the trees and glittering accents dancing in the wind and catching the sun. While it is slightly off the beaten path and is secluded, it is close enough to the hub of Taos to appreciate the food, art and people. We are so looking forward to future stays.

Owner's Response: Ah, Isn't is nice to be considered "A gem"! I too love this home. It was my first in Taos and the title "Truly Unique" is no misnomer as you well know! My antiques, art and sense of whimsy are everywhere and so much to discover on the property. The vintage Airstream and two story tree house are great favorites. It is "off the beaten path" in the sense that it feels very private and rural and yet you can hear the bells from the church on the Plaza every morning and a short two minute drive has you at the Plaza for shops, galleries, a dozen restaurants and museums. I am an avid gardener and love my lawns, orchard, planters with flowers everywhere. A summer oasis and as you said, the turning color of the leaves in the fall is pretty spectacular since I have a ridiculous number of trees on the property. The patio with fireplace and BBQ and all my flowers in containers are pretty special in the summer too. Everyone loves that hot tub under the elm tree. Amazing star watching at night and just a few steps from the house. Outdoor shower, towels and robes included of course. I always enjoy hearing from you that you are heading up this way for another special visit. Till next time and thanks again...

Beautiful Place

Great way to enjoy Taos. Charming property with a wonderful tree house that really captivated our 4 year old. We even slept in the tree house one night. Next time we head to Taos, we will try and stay here again. The landscaping is well done, and the home is so well decorated, we didn't want to leave. Convenient to the square, only a very short drive; but just far enough away that it is very quiet and peaceful on the property, especially in the evening and early morning.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed my home for your Taos vacation. You probably got about the last enjoyment of my gardens for the year. Everyone does love the tree house and glad you decided on an overnighter there. Yes this property is quiet and peaceful yet so convenient to the Plaza. Come back and visit anytime.
