Taos House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-4)

This property is truly one of a kind in Taos-perhaps anywhere. The main house is a wonderful old adobe on two pastoral acres down a country road surrounded by trees, lawns and gardens just across the Road from the Rio Pueblo. It has a remote and private feel and yet is less than two minutes from the Plaza and 30 minutes from world class skiing. You are entertained by stars and coyotes at night, roosters, the neighbors' donkey and church bells in the morning and birds all day long. The house is the true essence of southwest decor. The walls have a soft, buttermilk/beeswax sheen. Dark beamed ceilings and wood floors throughout are complimented by antique furnishings, native rugs, original art and many amazing and creative touches. It is a small home, perfect for a couple although it does have a second bedroom with its own private bath.

Enter from the covered portal into a kitchen fully equipped for all your cooking needs. If I don't have it, you probably don't need it! You will enjoy cooking on my 1949 O'Keefe & Merritt gas stove The living room is warm and inviting. A gas log stove in the corner provides central heat, but the wood burning kiva fireplace sets the tone. Ample firewood is located in a wood box just outside the kitchen door. There is an extensive DVD video library and numerous CDs. All you need for a quiet evening at home. In fact most guests spend more time here relaxing than they do out adventuring. The master bedroom has another kiva fireplace and an antique brass and iron queen size bed with down comforters and lots of pillows and good bedside reading lights. The large walk in closet opens to a hot tub under an 80' elm tree. There two full bathrooms in the home One has a deep tub and an array of candles. The second bedroom has an antique double iron bed and original art.

The outdoor patio is furnished with teak garden furniture, a fireplace and bbq grill. The yard is enchanting even in winter. Towering cottonwood trees line one side of the property above the numerous out buildings. There is a large lawn and an orchard of mature apple, apricot, plum and pear trees. The many garden beds were lovingly planted by the owner ( a professional landscaper) and are surrounded by many tall trees and a flowing acequia.

This property was once the home of Taos writer John Nichols of 'Milagro Beanfield War' fame which was written in what is now a two room guest casita (Also available for additional guests) However, this property is described in virtually all of John's books both fiction and non fiction in great detail. John is a friend and still lives nearby.

There are fun and fanciful touches to delight throughout the property from the turquoise Willy's planter truck in the front pasture to the Mardi Gras beads flung in the trees, the whimsical gardens and the outdoor art everywhere. The two story tree house (sleeps 4) in the orchard is so special, the greenhouse is an oasis in the winter and the 1971 Airstream trailer (sleeps 3) in the back pasture is just plain fun. There are also two small cottages and an awesome workshop.

The property has two very different aspects (in keeping with the Gemini owner). A cozy romantic winter retreat with summer possibilities of an entire compound which can sleep up to 15 guests and is perfect for small weddings, seminars, retreats, reunions and art workshops. I can offer a B&B service or cater meals. My downtown shop is a flower shop and we can do a wonderful floral arrangement and have it waiting for your arrival. We also do 'Welcome' baskets. Contact me for additional information/prices

(Please contact me for summer rates and details.

***Please note that when you rent the main house, the whole two acre property is your and I do not rent out any of the other spaces during your stay. Something guests love so much about my home is the privacy.

This property has appeared in Enchanted Homes, New Mexico Magazine and Green New Mexico. It was also featured on the Taos Home and Garden tour.

It must be seen to be believed. It is truly magical.

I was a landscaper in Marin Co. California and was ready for a change of pace and place. I found my house on my birthday - June 21. It was love at first sight. The property is so special the variety, the quiet, the trees and flowers, the other buildings and the proximity to town. It is just plain perfect.

Melissa Serfling purchased this house in 2005

I grew up in the Southwest and even though I loved many things about the Bay Area, I missed seasons, mountains, turquoise skies and thunderstorms.

Peace and quiet with good proximity to town, comfortable and cozy and so many fun things to see.

Great time in Taos!

  • 5 of 5
We had a great opportunity to rent this house in Taos. It is truly unique! The setting is beautiful and being only 10 or so minutes from town, feels really remote. The main house has two bedrooms/2 bathrooms. The tree house was awesome. Our kids (11 and 8) slept there a couple of nights. The Jacuzzi was great and the house made us feel very "at home." Would definitely rent again. We also rented an apartment in town for the last couple days of our trip, which was also very cute and cozy. Great location. Melissa was great to work with and made our vacation really special! Also, we happened to leave an IPAD at the house when we moved from the house to the apartment. We didn't even know it was missing until we got a call from Melissa that the cleaning crew found it. That really made our day.

Thanks again Melissa! Maybe we will see you next year!

Thanks again!

Owner's Response: Marla, your family was great! You loved everything and took such great advantage of your time in Taos. I especially loved the fact that you went from my two acre property to my downtown apartment for some real variety. It was nice to see your kids come and go from the apartment out into town with their friends and cousins. Come back anytime...

WOW! What a place!

  • 5 of 5
Three words to describe this property: whimsical, magical and... UNIQUE! From the charming grounds - complete with two VERY cool outhouses, guest cottages, a vintage Airstream Bullet and, of course, the tree house - to the warm and cozy main house decorated in eclectic Southwestern primitive-meets-modern decor, this place truly is unique.

Like another reviewer said, if you're looking for a cookie cutter, sterile environment, this may not be the rental for you. This property is well worn like your best and most favorite pair of shoes - the kind that you will hold onto forever because the newer shoes are nothing special and they don't make them like they used to. If you're the young-at-heart, adventurous, creative type, you very well could fall in love and never want to leave.

Thank you, Melissa, for sharing your wonderfully eccentric home with us. Our time there is now a cherished memory that we will carry for a long time. We hope to return some day.

Wonderful Truly Taos Adobe

  • 4 of 5
We stayed at the property in June 2014. It was truly as beautiful on the outside as on the inside! There were so many flowers and yet it was not a sculptured garden. The outside patio was perfect for a fire and a glass of wine in the evening or coffee in the morning, with an outdoor table large enough for a family to enjoy meals outside. The inside of the house was clean, well furnished and beautifully decorated. The kitchen was huge with an enchanting array of vintage utensils and appliances - all in great working order. There is a large, comfortable den with kiva and full dining table. The property sits back off the road and is quiet and feels secluded and yet is close to town. Definitely would stay here again!

Owner's Response: Hi Jeff, thanks for your review and so glad your family enjoyed my home. So many folks tell me that when they arrived in Taos they had a long list of outings, but found the property so relaxing and inviting that they spent most of their time "at home" and left feeling like they truly had been on a vacation! Just what I hope for.

Owner's Response: Hi Tracy, thanks so much for the review. I'm glad you enjoyed my home and property and I hope to see you back in Taos for another visit.

Yes the patio is delightful for morning coffee or dinner with the BBQ and the outdoor fireplace.

Glad you enjoyed the hot tub too. Quite a display of stars out here at high altitude and few street lights.

I love your house, I love your downtown shop, I love your creativity, energy, sense of style and your green thumb!

My girlfriend from high school joined me and my daughter for a wonderful getaway in Taos at your home. It was perfection for all of us.

The girls (both nine) played ball in the pasture, explored everywhere, spent two nights in the tree house and loved the old tire swing and the hammock as well as your games and books from yours and your childrens' childhoods. That was special and appreciated. They were returned to their proper places.

My girlfriend and I laughed, cooked, relaxed and soaked in the hot tub and caught up on our lives. Your gardens are amazing and thanks for sharing some of your "Garden Secrets" with us. Also thanks for recommending 5 Star Burgers, Taos Diner and The Gorge. All were perfect for us and the girls.

We also enjoyed your well stocked pantry and wonderful old stove for our home cooking. The patio was perfect for breakfast coffee in our robes and close times with the girls in the evenings. Did I mention all your stars??? Unreal!

We want to return in the fall when all your trees are turning color and in winter. The girls can learn to ski and we'll cozy up by the fireplace and drink hot mulled wines and make new memories.

Thank you for a spectacular time at your beautiful home. Your touches are perfect and you are "The Best" hostess. Enjoyed sharing our stories and a glass of wine with you on the patio for our last night in Taos. We will return!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your very nice review. I love sharing my home with the many folks who enjoy it. It has so much to offer. I enjoyed spending time with you and your girlfriend and I'm glad you liked my restaurant suggestions. Your girls were so much fun and such a great sense of adventure. Can't wait to see all of you in Taos sometime in the future.

Waking up to rainbows every morning....

  • 5 of 5
.....was one of the wonders of Truly Unique, the crystal in the bedroom window was my alarm clock. The wonders never ceased. From everything to explore at Truly Unique, to the town of Taos itself, and on into the surrounding area. The two weeks we spent just weren't long enough.

Staying at Truly Unique feels like spending time at the family cabin, it's home. From the kitchen with its vintage stove (wonderful!), the already stocked pantry, to the array of books, the music and dvd's, it's welcoming and comfortable. The two gas stoves kept everything warm and comfortable and were charming as well.
The photos give you an idea of the property but don't do it complete justice. Everywhere you turn there is something else to see, something to explore. It isn't the Hilton with standard decor, it's fun, funky and whimsy around every corner. With our love of photography my husband an I were in paradise.
Our initial issue with the wi-fi was quickly resolved, Melissa was only a phone call away which we appreciated. She was also a reliable source for good eats, places to go and a wonderful mechanic (for which we are VERY grateful!).
We would certainly recommend Truly Unique to anyone looking for a home, not a hotel. Older kids or teens would love exploring the tree house and the Airstream. Its location made it a perfect taking off point for Taos activities (5-10 min), local sightseeing, hiking, or, in season, skiing.
For eating there was something for everyone. Eske's Brew Pub, home of 'The Fatty' and other delights was a repeater, as was The Trading Post Italian restaurant. Another favorite was 3 One 6, a converted gas station with local charm and a southwestern flavor. The Gorge, a bit fancier, also made it to the 'please repeat' list. And we hadn't even begun to check out the possibilities.
The other member of our party, Ace da dog, gives Truly Unique a five woofs rating (out of 5) for comfort. He loved having his own yard to explore, sunshine to bask in and the occasional coyote to sing with at night.
We came to Taos for the sunshine, we will come back because it offers so much more. I think I can safely say we have fallen in love with Truly Unique, Taos, and New Mexico.

Owner's Response: Good reviews are nice, but RAVE reviews are great! I so enjoyed meeting you. I had fun sharing my Taos Favorites information, but mostly I am so glad you loved my house! You were there long enough to notice everything I do and appreciate my zaniness! Please do send me some of the 1500 photos you took during your stay. Ace was a good boy and I am sure he is asking about a return visit to explore more of those two acres. I'm looking forward to your next visit and thanks again. You may have spent two weeks in Taos, but you have just scratched the surface of everything we have to offer visitors.
