Comfortable, fully equipped property, central to the Silver Coast ,

Modern self-catering property in a prime position just outside the city walls of Obidos, recently voted one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal. With two bedrooms sleeping 4 people, and a double sofa-bed in the sitting room, the house offers comfortable furnishings to make staying here as pleasant as possible for up to 6 persons. There is secure parking for a car behind electronic gates, and a sunny south facing terrace that is a complete suntrap in order to enjoy the wonderful climate. We have a local agent who will assist you whilst staying at the house if you wish. The property is within 1 hours drive of bustling, cosmopolitan Lisbon, and 15 minutes drive from local beaches at Peniche and Obidos Lagoon. This part of the Silver Coast is easily accessible, and the house is centrally located to visit World Heritage Sites such as Tomar, Alcabaca, Batalha and Sintra. There is always something to do in Obidos, numerous festivals and concerts are held within the city throughout the year.

Local information: This part of the Silver Coast is easily accessible, and the house is centrally located to visit World Heritage Sites such as Tomar, Alcabaca, Batalha and Sintra. Obidos has numerous restaurants and bars to whet your appetite, ranging in cost and variety and is famous for its local drink Ginga, which is served in chocolate cups! There is always something to do in Obidos, numerous festivals and concerts are held within the city throughout the year. A large Supermarket, municipal swimming pool and leisure facilities are within a 2 minute drive as is free Internet access. There are several other supermarkets in Caldas da Rainha. Within Obidos, there is a Pharmacy, several banks, and local grocery stores offering fresh daily bread and supplies. Try a Pastais de Nata (a kind of custard tart) with a coffee for a mid morning treat. There is a daily flower and produce market in Caldas, and a weekly market. We have a favourite Sunday market in Pateias, up the coast towards Sao Pedro de Moel.

Beaches and festivals: There are many beaches within 30 minutes drive of Obidos: Peniche, Baleal and Supertubes for surfing fun and wonderful fish restaurants (15 minutes) Foz de Arelho with numerous water sports on Obidos Lagoon and wide open golden sand (20 minutes). You can windsurf, water ski, hire a rowing boat or try paragliding on the lagoon. Baleal beach hosts several international surf competitions during the year. Sao Martinho de Porto with it's safe crescent bay, family atmosphere (30 minute drive) shops and waterfront cafes. Look out for the traditionally dressed women in Nazare, along with a dramatic rocky backdrop to a buzzing seaside resort (40 minutes). Park at Sitio, overlooking Nazare, and take the funicular railway down to the town. Driving South from Obidos you will find Santa Cruz, which is a popular little resort with a beautiful beach. There are music festivals held on the beaches during the summer months, and more events celebrating Rocha pears, grown locally, and the sea.

Travel and distances: The use of a car is recommended. Lisbon is 1 hour (70km) by car. There is a regular bus service between Lisbon and Obidos, or the railway from Caldas de Rainha. Scheduled airlines include BA, TAP (Portugal Airline) BMIBaby, Monarch, and Easy jet. Porto airport is 2.5 hours (150km) by car. Scheduled airlines are TAP and Ryanair. If you have time to spare, take the cross channel ferries to Bilbao or Santander. The distance from Bilbao is approx 450 miles through Spain (we've done it a few times). Caldas da Rainha 7km / 10 minutes. Foz do Arelho 17km / 20 minutes. Sao Martinho do Porto 27km / 22 minutes. Nazare 41km / 33 minutes. Sao Pedro de Moel 65km / 50 minutes. Batalha 69km / 48 minutes. Alcabaca -40km, 30 minutes Fatima - 94km, 57 minutes. Sintra - 97km, 65 minutes Lisbon - 100km, 66 minutes (Center). Constancia 98km / 56 minutes.

Obidos has been voted one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal and it is very special to the Portuguese people. The Villa Natal transforms the village into a Winter Wonderland at Christmas. A Chocolate Festival is held annually, as is a Medieval Festival and Opera Festival in the Summer months. There are numerous cultural activities, such as Fado concerts, piano concerts and exhibitions held in the local museum. Within an hours drive, you could dive off Belenga Island, canoe in Constancia, surf and windsurf on the local beaches, discover a local Wine Route, explore the mountains and national parks, or visit UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Alcabaca, Tomar, Batalha and Sintra. There are several large shopping centres in Lisbon which you could combine with a visit to Belem, a boat ride ride on the Tejo, a tram or bus trip around the historic centre. Historians can discover the history of the Peninsular Wars and the importance of the Duke of Wellington in nearby Terres Vedras and locality.

The fitted kitchen includes electric fan oven, extractor fan, child safe ceramic hob, large fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster and kettle, as well as a washer/dryer and dishwasher. The large south facing terrace is accessible from the kitchen, and contains a dining table, 6 chairs, parasol and two sun-loungers. There is also a traditional charcoal BBQ. There is secure parking accessible by electric gates, and pedestrian access to the lower level using a videophone entry system. The secure parking is great to have during busy tourist events as parking can become difficult. Towels and linen are included. The property is cleaned prior to arrival. Please bring your own beach towels.

We stayed in this lovely house until Nov. 6 and enjoyed every minute. The house is located within easy walking distance to wonderful restaurants, bus stop, and a supermarket. We had no car so the close proximity to amenities was a must for us. The owners and their manager were extremely helpful and attentive. The house, itself, was beautifully furnished and contained great appliances and entertainment devices. The television, with multiple channels, was especially appreciated.

We could not have stayed in a better place!
Owner's Response: We were so pleased that this stay was successful as it was for a month, and without a car, which shows that the local area can be explored on foot and by public transport if required! Transport is quick from Lisbon with a regular bus service, and it can be easy to overlook all Obidos has to offer if you are quick to drive off to nearby towns. Restaurants, walks, Roman ruins
and spotting the local wildlife - try looking for the hoopoe bird in the orchard across the road from our house.

Second time we've stayed Just two of us.
Excellent house,clean and tidy,super views from lounge which is upstairs and large terrace with sun all day. BBQ's anytime.
Short walk to shops and restaurants inside city wall.
Short drive to beautiful beaches, towns and markets and more restaurants.
Not to be missed.

Obidos Apartment

It was definitely the best equipped place in which we've ever stayed (and that's over 20 years around Europe and Asia) and that is such a joy when you've a couple of kids to entertain. We could go on for ages about all the very good aspects of the apartment and the thoughtful and kind way in which you allowed us to arrive and depart a day early (including the medieval festival which was fun) but suffice to say that we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We have some lovely photos and memories of the entire area and of eating outside each evening (particularly having barbecued fish).

In our opinion, the best restaurants were Briquina just up the street opposite the Hotel Obidos on the right as you walked up the hill (which was very impressive) and Caldeirao by the mausoleum (equally so though they have trebled the price of the house wine it appears). The Restaurant Ramoda on a side-street in Obidos was truly dreadful and horribly expensive (our only bad experience) but that is probably a reflection of the fact that "central" Obidos caters for one-off tourist visitors more than people who live there. There's also a terrific swimming pool at Salir do Porto which we discovered right by the beach and not very full but very friendly staff and incredibly well-kept. We will genuinely recommend the apartment (and will) to our friends and family as it was absolutely terrific even if you were to change nothing at all. Pingu Doce and LeClerc in Caldas were both excellent.

Thanks once again for your kindness and generosity in allowing us to use your wonderful place - we had a great time.

I'm pleased you found the new pool at Salir do Porto (on the bay at Sao Martinho do Porto) and had a good experience there, we haven't made it there yet, so will ensure we do on our next trip. The restaurants in Obidos as on the whole excellent in terms of food and value for money - I think the Ramoda is on a hilly side street with an outside grill, but next door is the Obidos Lounge which has an outside patio area and indoor seating which we have found to be a good choice. The Caldeieao restaurant never seems to fail for delicious food! Thank you too for such a good review,and we hope you will come back to Obidos again!

Another Wonderful Holiday

Thank you Kath & David for another wonderful holiday. Having enjoyed our week in October we booked again but this time for three weeks and we can't wait to book again. We love the house it is so comfortable and the views from the lounge window are spectacular and the patio is a sun trap. There is everything you could want in the house and the location is perfect . Obidos is an excellent base as most of the major sites of interest such as Lisbon, Fatima, Tomar are no more than an hour away and within 20-30 minutes you have a choice of spectaculr beaches for all activites from surfing to sitting doing nothing . We love Nazare, San Martino De Porto and Foz D Arillo and the Obidos Lagoon and even on a busy day you can find an quiet corner. All the information you need to visit the area and beyond is provided for you along with lots of information on restaurants etc. Anna and her team keep the house spotless and is always on hand if you need any help or information. David and Kath have thought of everything to help us share this area of Portugal that they obviously love. Thank you again and we will be back soon as we love it too.
