Comfortable, fully equipped property, central to the Silver Coast ,

Modern self-catering property in a prime position just outside the city walls of Obidos, recently voted one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal. With two bedrooms sleeping 4 people, and a double sofa-bed in the sitting room, the house offers comfortable furnishings to make staying here as pleasant as possible for up to 6 persons. There is secure parking for a car behind electronic gates, and a sunny south facing terrace that is a complete suntrap in order to enjoy the wonderful climate. We have a local agent who will assist you whilst staying at the house if you wish. The property is within 1 hours drive of bustling, cosmopolitan Lisbon, and 15 minutes drive from local beaches at Peniche and Obidos Lagoon. This part of the Silver Coast is easily accessible, and the house is centrally located to visit World Heritage Sites such as Tomar, Alcabaca, Batalha and Sintra. There is always something to do in Obidos, numerous festivals and concerts are held within the city throughout the year.

Local information: This part of the Silver Coast is easily accessible, and the house is centrally located to visit World Heritage Sites such as Tomar, Alcabaca, Batalha and Sintra. Obidos has numerous restaurants and bars to whet your appetite, ranging in cost and variety and is famous for its local drink Ginga, which is served in chocolate cups! There is always something to do in Obidos, numerous festivals and concerts are held within the city throughout the year. A large Supermarket, municipal swimming pool and leisure facilities are within a 2 minute drive as is free Internet access. There are several other supermarkets in Caldas da Rainha. Within Obidos, there is a Pharmacy, several banks, and local grocery stores offering fresh daily bread and supplies. Try a Pastais de Nata (a kind of custard tart) with a coffee for a mid morning treat. There is a daily flower and produce market in Caldas, and a weekly market. We have a favourite Sunday market in Pateias, up the coast towards Sao Pedro de Moel.

Beaches and festivals: There are many beaches within 30 minutes drive of Obidos: Peniche, Baleal and Supertubes for surfing fun and wonderful fish restaurants (15 minutes) Foz de Arelho with numerous water sports on Obidos Lagoon and wide open golden sand (20 minutes). You can windsurf, water ski, hire a rowing boat or try paragliding on the lagoon. Baleal beach hosts several international surf competitions during the year. Sao Martinho de Porto with it's safe crescent bay, family atmosphere (30 minute drive) shops and waterfront cafes. Look out for the traditionally dressed women in Nazare, along with a dramatic rocky backdrop to a buzzing seaside resort (40 minutes). Park at Sitio, overlooking Nazare, and take the funicular railway down to the town. Driving South from Obidos you will find Santa Cruz, which is a popular little resort with a beautiful beach. There are music festivals held on the beaches during the summer months, and more events celebrating Rocha pears, grown locally, and the sea.

Review Submitted: October 7, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009

This delightful property is just outside the walls of the medieval town of Obidos. The restaurants and sights of the town are a short walk away. The property is ideally situated for exploring the sights of this very interesting area; Alcobaca, Tomar, Fatima and many others. Lisbon is only an hour away as well. It is close to the excellent Portuguese motorway system which gets you just\ about everywhere. It is also close to the very smart town of Caldas da Rainha with its excellent shopping and fabulous market.

The property is very well equipped and fitted out, with quality kitchen items and crockery, furniture and bedding. There is a suntrap garden for sitting out and doing nothing and the agents have made sure it is the cleanest holiday property we have stayed in for many a year. Highly recommended

Perfect Stay

  • 5 of 5
This was our second visit to this town house. It is very well equiped, clean, tidy and uncluttered. For rainy days or dark evenings there is tv, DVD player, playstation, and audio unit with a good selection of DVD's, and books. It is very well located with plenty of places to visit within reasonable distance, supermarket five min by car. OBIDOS is within a few mins walk.

Lovely fully equiped house.

  • 5 of 5
The house itself is lovely, fully equiped, with a very good location, very close to the castle walls. The vue from the living room window is quite nice, overloking the green fields that surround Óbidos and the big Senhor da Pedra church.
However I would like to point out the cordiality of the owner.
We were very pleased with our little stay and fully enjoined our week end. Thank you Katherine!

Wonderful apartment

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at this amazing apartment on the edge of the walled City. It is extremely well equipped in all areas. There is a plethora of games, books, DVDs & CDs in the lounge area for a rainy or lazy day or evening and a mountain of information on places of interest and good restaurants in the area. The property is very secure, with gated entrance and was in a fantastic position for exploring the surrounding area. We particularly enjoyed the monastery at Alcobaca and the amazing Convent at Tomar. There are numerous lovely beaches, including Nazare, Peniche & the Lagoon at Obidos. There was a medieval festival over both weekends of our 2 week stay, which we went to on our last Sunday. It was very cheap to get into and was an excellent festival, with food & drink from the medieval period & various events. Very enjoyable. All in all we had an amazing time and would love to go back to this apartment again. The friends that we travelled with have now been 3 times & I'm sure it won't be their last! Thoroughly recommend this to anybody who likes culture, beaches, eating & drinking. Thanks for a great time Mary & Geoff Tanner

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Obidos, we love the fact that new people are always surprised at the things they can visit in the area. Good to hear that our home was to your liking and was equipped to a good standard for you. We have put in a wifi facility this summer which does make a difference to running up the hill to the internet café! The Medieval Festival is an annual event during July/August which draws a lot of people to the area, we managed to get there last year and thoroughly enjoyed the event. I know previous guests introduced you to our home, we hope you also spread the word on the Silver Coast and Obidos as it deserves a lot more recognition as a good place to holiday.

Excellent Apartment in Obidos

  • 5 of 5
This is an excellent apartment. It is well-maintained, spotlessly clean, quiet, and well-furnished. It has all the modern conveniences--clothes washer, dish washer, TV, etc. The apartment has secure off-street parking. But be aware that navigating to/from your parking space and the garage entrance can be challenging. The apartment owner--Kath---and her local manager--Ana-- are very helpful. You can pay your rental fee by credit card--very convenient. Be aware that in Portugal you are allowed to withdraw only Euro 200 twice a day from an ATM. Obidos is still a medieval town endowed with its defensive walls and castle. You can walk the walls if you are sufficiently sure-footed; there are no hand-railings. The castle is now a pousada. We checked out the pousada and would not encourage anyone to stay there. It is in need of serious upgrading. Unfortunately the pousadas in Portugal pale in comparison to the paradors of Spain. This might be because the Government seems to have delegated overall management of the pousadas to a private firm that is not the most up-to--date in the world. Their reservation system is third world. It is time for the Government to pay attention to the management of its historic hotel sites. Be aware that it is a steep walk uphill from the apartment to the main street in Obidos. Also that street is well-endowed with tourists visiting from tour buses. You can essentially "do" Obidos in an afternoon, but it is a good location for visiting other historical sites in the area. From Obidos we visited Batalha, Tomar, and Mafra. We also visited Nazare and consider it forgettable. Portugal's highway system is first-rate, although the tolls are high. How to improve the apartment? First, connecting to a WiFI system. While there is free WiFI up in town, the thought of climbing that steep hill to get on line is deterring. And in this day, some of us live on our laptops 24-hours a day. Second, there is no AC, a portable AC, or fan. While the basement bedrooms are likely to be cool in summer, and summers may be cool in Obidos, we would want to be sure that we would not roast in August. The only restaurant in town we tried was the O Caldeirao. It was not that good. We recommend trying other restaurants in Obidos with a higher ranking on Trip Advisor.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. We have acted on the provision of wifi, so we now have a limited service (due to the service in Obidos!) which is sufficient for keeping in touch and general day to day use. Hopefully this is something future guests will appreciate. We are always pleased when guests comment on the equipment and cleanliness of the house, because it is important to us that guests have a home from home experience.

The house is very beautiful, two-story, with a great barbecue, private garage. We felt totally at home. All very clean and cozy, with a nice view of the castle. Let's go back for sure.

Townhouse in Obidos

  • 5 of 5
We stayed in this lovely house until Nov. 6 and enjoyed every minute. The house is located within easy walking distance to wonderful restaurants, bus stop, and a supermarket. We had no car so the close proximity to amenities was a must for us. The owners and their manager were extremely helpful and attentive. The house, itself, was beautifully furnished and contained great appliances and entertainment devices. The television, with multiple channels, was especially appreciated.

We could not have stayed in a better place!

Owner's Response: We were so pleased that this stay was successful as it was for a month, and without a car, which shows that the local area can be explored on foot and by public transport if required! Transport is quick from Lisbon with a regular bus service, and it can be easy to overlook all Obidos has to offer if you are quick to drive off to nearby towns. Restaurants, walks, Roman ruins
and spotting the local wildlife - try looking for the hoopoe bird in the orchard across the road from our house.

Obidos has been voted one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal and it is very special to the Portuguese people. The Villa Natal transforms the village into a Winter Wonderland at Christmas. A Chocolate Festival is held annually, as is a Medieval Festival in the Summer months. There are numerous cultural activities, such as Fado concerts, piano concerts and exhibitions held in the local museum. Within an hours drive, you could dive off Belenga Island, canoe in Constancia, surf and windsurf on the local beaches, discover a local Wine Route, explore the mountains and national parks, or visit UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Alcabaca, Tomar, Batalha and Sintra. There are several large shopping centres in Lisbon which you could combine with a visit to Belem, a boat ride ride on the Tejo, a tram or bus trip around the historic centre. Historians can discover the history of the Peninsular Wars and the importance of the Duke of Wellington in nearby Terres Vedras and locality.
