My family and I have vacationed in Door County for over 40 years and realized how special this beautiful peninsula is both in history, culture and in climate. Its definitely a journey to a forgotten world where enjoying the outdoors takes precedence over the day to day and where food, and art, nature and recreation make this somewhat remote destination worth every minute of travel every time we come. Truly a wonderful place to spend time.
Door County has always been our favorite family vacation spot. For years we had rented houses there, until one year the house we rented was also listed for sale. After our “vacation week,” we knew that we wanted to buy a house in this beautiful place we could call our get-away home and enjoy at our leisure whenever we need to recharge. We lost that house to another buyer, but ended up with a house just down the road, that in the end was even more perfect because of the location, the land and the layout of the house itself. Originally settled on the corner of an old Scandinavian estate as the home for its gardener, it came complete with Bay views, loads of sunshine, lots of lawn and adjoining woods for the kids to escape to never lands that don’t exit in the city. That is Villa Villekula, where we have since spent many unforgettable days and weeks with family and friends and our “family” of renters who have come to enjoy it as much as we do every season. It’s unique setting just off Beach Road on a stretch of lawn pouring down on over an acre toward the Bay has given us the privacy of our secluded villa, with the added bonus of close proximity to shops, restaurants and recreation. The perfect place to relax, it is one of the only places I know that when there—there is no place else on earth . . . truly paradise.
Villa Villakula is a single, story, three-bedroom home with a large great room anchored by a stone fireplace and nooks and crannies for sleeping and privacy. It comes furnished with a fully equipped kitchen, laundry, picnic tables, grills and bikes. Relaxed yet sophisticated, it is steps above a cabin, but an easy going, relaxed home with gracious furnishing and a feel of a summer home. Ideally located close to water and a public boat launch, it is also close to the marina, shops, restaurants and the back roads for hiking, biking and exploring. The house is bordered by a small orchard outside the bedroom windows and another at the bottom of the property that overlooks the Bay. Rear and sides also include small woods that create a feeling of privacy while offering an invitation to explore what lies within. Off the road and nestled down toward the Bay from the highway, it is the perfect hideaway for kids, pets and grownups who need a true escape from the everyday. A child’s playhouse complete with tiny furnishings sits just outside the door. A screened porch with large family picnic table just off the kitchen provides a spot to enjoy the outdoors and watch the birds. The patio on the Bay side sits amidst the garden where birds and butterflies drift in and out. At night, the stars amaze. Stare above around the warmth of the fire pit. Forget the everyday and know that you are in a very special place.
