Guestbook comments from the owner
We have never experienced a more favourable climate than Antigua and were sad to leave both Antigua and the villa behind. The precise info provided by the HomeAway website gave only a glimpse into the delight that awaited us. Situated on the North Finger, the villa is a quiet retreat away from downtown Jolly Harbour, yet it is close enough when you want stores, restaurants, etc. We loved the villa, the north and south beaches, and the community. The folks at HBK were friendly and helpful.
James' and Teresa's info packet is a useful tool for planning. We travelled to the many of the different treasures on the island visiting English Harbour area (Nelson’s Dockyard and Shirley Heights) as well as Half Moon Bay, Hell’s Gate, the Donkey Sanctuary and Devils’ Bridge to mention a few. Although we rented a car, taxis and buses are available. We have to mention the Eco Tour with Antiguan Adventures. Picked up from the docks of Jolly Harbour by a very personable crew on a power catamaran, we had an exceptionally pleasant daytrip which focused on the island's ecology and history.
A short trip takes you to Ffryes Beach and Dennis’ restaurant where we shared dishes (try curried goat); we visited again our last evening to watch the sunset. We dined on local dishes at several restaurants including Castaways (South Beach). At Sunset House on Darkwood Beach, Carla served jerk chicken, goat stew and grilled fish that were superb! For North American/European foods, several restaurants are available. We didn’t just eat out; the villa’s kitchen is well-appointed so we dined at “home” usually starting with a glass of wine watching the sunset at North Beach, followed by the meal and a relaxing evening listening to the tree frogs while star gazing.
No trip to Antigua is complete without experiencing local food purchased from the street vendors including jerk, pepper pot, bull’s foot soup and black pineapples. Visit the St. John`s market area; travelling there by local bus is a great way to meet Antiguans. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We shopped the large grocery stores as well as the small village stores. Lots of interesting shops are found around the St. Marys and High Street area; by the harbour you find the tourist area of the Quays.
James and Teresa, thanks for everything; most of all for sharing this piece of paradise. We hope to return to the island and your villa!
