Perfect Apartment in a Great Neighborhood

  • 5 of 5
Recently my wife and I purchased our first home. As we are going about building a new kitchen, we go back to the week we spent living in this beautiful apartment and use it's kitchen as a template for our own. Yes, it was that good. Everything from the kitchen to the living space to the comfortable bed to the 1.5 bathrooms to the west-ward facing balcony was amazing. We didn't want to leave. By far the best vacation rental we've had in the past 10 years.

Very Satisifed Repeat Renter

  • 5 of 5
For the past 6 years I have been traveling to Amsterdam on business 3 to 4 times per year for visits of 10 days or so each time. I have stayed in this penthouse apartment every time. The location is superb for my work with the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. The neighborhood has numerous restaurants and shops. Tram access to the central train station is quite convenient. The apartment is clean, spacious, well-maintained, and well-equipped. There is the added bonus of roof access in warm weather. The landlords are especially courteous and helpful. I have recommended this apartment to friends. My most recent stay was in October 2013.

Beautiful apartment, but in a noisy, gritty location

  • 3 of 5
Other reviewers have accurately described the warm, friendly welcome, complete with wine and munchies, as well as the steep, narrow stairs (I'll add "shallow" to that list). What no one described, so what I didn't expect, was the street noise, which is LOUD.
The reason is that the apartment overlooks Ceintuurban, a busy, noisy street, and also a small side street (Dusartstraat). The chainsaw buzz-sound of passing motorbikes on Ceintuurban is near-constant. Next door to the apt is a coffee house, and across the street is a bar with outdoor seating. Every night we had noise from these sources, and on weekends, noise lasted from the evening into the wee hours, ending in prolonged yelling in the street below the windows between 3 and 5 AM on *both* weekend nights we were there.
So, the website's description of this apartment as "quiet" is just wrong. This description should be changed to "noisy", or the owners should sound-proof the windows. The noise was so much that it we repeatedly checked the windows to make sure they were closed properly. They were, and they seem newer and double-glazed, but something is seriously amiss because a ton of street noise is coming through. If you are a light sleeper this is a major problem.
The street the apt is located on is a bit gritty and grimy (on top of the nearby coffee house and bar). On the other end of the block, along the canal, there is a mini-red light district. We never felt afraid walking in the area at night but perhaps should have; as on the morning of our departure we were greeted by a glass covered sidewalk DIRECTLY in front of the apartment where a car window had been shattered overnight.
Additional, exceptional noise problems were present at the time of our stay (week of Sept. 23 2013) because construction was going on on the roof of the apartment next door, on BOTH sides. This made for some insane noise in the mornings, so loud it basically chased us out of the apartment. So much for leisurely mornings on vacation!
The owners had not warned us this construction was occurring, and we had no option to cancel or find other accommodations. No discount was given, either, though I never would have chosen to stay there had I known this construction was going on. It is a nice apartment, but highly compromised by these issues.

Owner's Response: Our guests, who stayed almost a week in the apartment, never complained about noise during their stay.
Because the owner of the neighboring buildings did not inform us about the maintenance, we could only pass this information to them upon arrival, and we asked them to report it to us if the nuisance was too bad. Only two days before departure, they indicated that the sound of the construction work at the neighboring buildings was somewhat disturbing, but that they enjoyed the apartment. If the nuisance had been so bad, the guests could have made a request for an earlier check out and a return of part of the rent. They have not done this, though we are available 24/24 to our guests via a mobile phone.
During their stay, they apparently experienced other noise.
Amsterdam is a lively metropolis with all the benefits and burdens, like for example New York. The neighborhood is a safe and quiet neighborhood, measured by these standards. According to the website of the municipality it is even one of the safest neighborhoods of Amsterdam and certainly not "a bit gritty and grimy".
If you cannot stand noise (the guests were apparently light sleepers) maybe it is better not to rent an apartment in a big city, but in a small town near Amsterdam. In all other reviews our guests call this a very pleasant area and recommend it as just the place to stay if you are in Amsterdam. Apparently, none of the previous guests felt unsafe and these guests, as they wrote themselves, didn’t either.
As for the terrace across the apartment: this is closed from around 11 PM, so noise until late at night does not occur.
There is indeed a coffee shop two doors away, but in Amsterdam this is a normal company and they are not regarded as dangerous or criminal.
The "mini -Red -light district " is quite far away. This is also legal in the Netherlands and if it bothers you, you should decide not to go there, especially when you are fundamentally against prostitution. Anyway, there is no danger to walk past them.
The Ceintuurbaan is a main road, so inevitably there is more traffic than on the side streets. If the windows (double glazed) are closed almost all sound is stopped. Only through the vents some noise will enter.

This is the first time in more than five years that these complaints are voiced. See previous reviews of other guests.

Beautiful, large apartment in quiet neighborhood!

  • 5 of 5
We had an excellent time in Amsterdam at the Penthouse Apartment. My partner and I were traveling together and took a lot of time to decide on the perfect location for our stay. We looked at the pictures and read other reviews carefully. Everything is EXACTLY as described in the description and pictures. We were impressed when we arrived at how large the property is. VERY SPACIOUS! The location is perfect, a 5 min walk from the Albert Cuyp Market (dont miss it!) and a 10 min walk to the Rijks Museum. Beautiful canals nearby. This is the perfect apartment for people who LOVE to WALK AND EXPLORE. (There are tram stops on Centerbaan (2 min walk), if you're not a walker.) Also ATMs that dont require credit cards with chips are conveniently located nearby. We found everything we could have ever wanted within a 15 min walk of the apartment. Highly recommended. Loved the beautiful flowers that were in the apartment when we arrived, and they lasted all week! Also a beautiful 360 degree view of the city from the roof terrace.

Great apartment with very helpful hosts

  • 5 of 5
The apartment is the kind of place I could imagine living in. It is very bright and comfortable with everything you could imagine needing. My wife, 9 year old daughter and I looked forward to relaxing there after a day exploring in the city. Jip and Gertjan were very helpful with advice and even provided fresh food for our arrival including local pastries made especially for Queensday. Very delicious. The Pijp area has lots of restaurants, cafés and parks and the center is easily accessible by tram, bike or walking. We'll definitely be back on our next visit to Amsterdam.

Great Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5
We really enjoyed staying in the apartment and Jip the host was amazing. He greeted us with an easy-to-understand explanation of the apartment, it's layout and the appliances. The apartment is well-designed and well lit. The back balcony and the roof deck are particularly charming. There was a white wine, meats, cheeses and crackers to tide you over until you can get to the market. He also had a cache of pamphlets and booklets about Amsterdam, its neighborhoods and museums along with his personalized list of local restaurants and businesses.

We really enjoyed staying in the Pijp Neighborhood with it's abundance of great ethnic restaurants and the Albert Cuyp Market. We could take trams or walk to just about anywhere in Amsterdam. The Pijp neighborhood was active during the day and evening, but it did quiet down so you could sleep at night. Plus if you want crazy central Amsterdam is just a good hike or a tram ride away.

Watch out for bicycles--They have the right of way! Also, the stairs to the apartment are exceedingly steep and narrow. If you weigh more than 15 stone you may want to reconsider. Do NOT bring large pieces of luggage!

All in all a great place. You feel like you are staying in the nicest place around!
