Serenely situated in one of the best kept secrets in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area is Canaan Valley, West Virginia. Year-round activities appeal to the weekend warrior or the weary soul looking for a little R&R.
If adventure is what you seek, Timberline and Canaan Valley slopes both await you. Imagine waking up in the midst of a squaw storm laying eight inches of fresh powder while the rest of the D.C. area experiences some rain. Unlike the numerous ski resorts in the area; you will be happily surprised that the wait is usually no more than five to ten minutes to get on a lift.
For rest and relaxation, you may decide to light a fire, put in a DVD or read a book, and spend the day in quiet tranquility.
After a full day of either activity or leisure, enjoy a hot cup of cocoa by a home built fire or a glass of wine along with a therapeutic bubble bath. The biggest decision of the evening is whether or not to enjoy a family meal at home or go out and experience one of a variety of restaurants for every budget.
During the summer, enjoy white water rafting down the Cheat River, horseback riding to the summit of Canaan valley, Euro tubing down the ski slopes, spelunking caverns in Dolly Sods, Euro Bunjee, mountain biking, or enjoy a day at a pro golf course.
If you want to kick back and relax, enjoy a day at our pool, play tennis, fish at our privately stocked pond or just relax on our extra large deck and surf the internet, read a good book, take a nap in fresh mountain air, or enjoy watching one of our DVDs.
Our chalet #27 has the best of both worlds. We have a spacious deck that backs up to a tree line in the summertime, but gives a beautiful view of the slopes during winter. Nearby is a national bird sanctuary where you can view bald eagles, ravens, and other elegant birds at your leisure.
At night, sit out on our deck and take in the night sky, unfettered by urban and suburban lights.
Our chalet is equipped with lots of extras including superb views, great books, games, and DVDs that will please everyone. We welcome guests for honeymoons, anniversaries, family reunions, or any occasion - special or ordinary.
An amenity worth noting is that our cabin is one of few in Canaan Valley equipped with central air conditioning. Many units state they have air conditioning, but it is usually nothing more than a cheap stand alone interor unit that really doesn't cool the cabin down much unlike ours which keeps the entire cabin comfortable especially during this SUPER HOT summer! We also should add a disclaimer about internet service. It is running at the fastest speeds available in the area. We just upgraded our Wi-Fi to run at 6x the speed of other units of the area, but it is a rural area and may not be as fast as your home.
Unlike most VRBO inquiries; you will receive a prompt and professional response to your inquiry. You will receive A+ treatment from beginning to end which separates us from most everyone else you will encounter on VRBO. We are not in the business of renting a unit. We are in the business of giving you a memorable experience.
Feel free to contact us for arrangements and be sure to specify unit #27 when you make reservations.
Inquire about military discounts and specials! (Note: Discounts and specials do not apply from Dec 20 to Jan 2, MLK Holiday and President's Day).

We are just your typical all American family. My wife and I went to the same Elementary School, same Church, Jr. High, High School, and worked at the same place as teenagers and basically ignored each other like the plague. College rolled around and we became best friends. The friendship grew into love and we should be sitting on a couch telling our story from 'When Harry Met Sally'. We have 3 beautiful children. A son in college, a teenage daughter who would like to run away and become a gypsy, and the baby of the family...another son who is going into High School
2005 marked our 13th Wedding Anniversary...no superstition there and we celebrated by going to Canaan Valley on a ski trip (I had never been skiing before). I was the one who couldn't get off the bunny slope lift without falling down and bringing the lift to a grinding halt over and over. By the end of the day, I was so popular at the bunny slopes, I had two escorts with red crosses on their ski jackets following me around for the rest of the day like KGB operatives or members of the Swiss Army Guard protecting the Vatican. Needless to say I mastered the Bunny Slopes and moved on to the horrific beginner course called the 'Salamander' I was told it was a great training course and would learn to ski with the big boys. I was fine at the beginning until the Blue and Black Diamond courses intersected and prayed to just make it down without landing in a wealthy ski slope owning hot tub. I enjoy intermediate courses now and am sure I could do black diamonds, but no need to brag about my skiing skills. I loved the unique aspects of Black Bear compared to every other place in Canaan, bought the chalet in 2006 and love going up there as much as I can all times of the year.
Our chalet is nestled right at the crest of Black Bear Resort. We have an extra large deck that backs up to woods (it quite literally feels like a tree house). During the winter, it is easy to get out of the resort and bee line it right to the ski resorts without having to wait for the snow plow to come by. Our home is family friendly and is equipped with books, DVDs, lot's of games, and wireless internet access. We are one of few units with a mud room (which is quite useful in the winter time) and also have central air conditioning so you can remain comfortable year round. Everyone comments on how much they enjoy our amenities and thanks us for sharing our home with them. It is kid friendly, pet friendly, and even had a group of friends from around the world meet up at our cabin and comment what a peaceful and serene setting for a reunion.
