Our 4-star graded Garden Apartment is within Pilrig House, an A-listed 17th-Century Scottish Townhouse (built in 1638), which has an incredible history and a wonderful literary connection - it was once the home of Robert Louis Stevenson's mother's family - one of Scotland's most acclaimed authors! Rates

Please view our extremely competitive nightly rates and our reduced weekly rates on our owner's website. You will note that we do not try to seduce you by giving 'per person per night' rates on the opening listing details - we feel this is disingenuous - we state our true minimum nightly and weekly rate - which has no hidden 'add-ons'.

Discounts (on nightly rates) for longer stays:

2 weeks - 15%

3 weeks - 20%

4 weeks or longer - 25% ( do ask - we are flexible and sometimes offer a greater discount if the stay is for low season!)

We also offer all solo travellers 10% discount on our nightly rates!

Note: Do check our Park and Balfour Apartments' availability if the Garden Apartment is already booked - we can offer a discount for a 1 or 2-person stay!

Booking & Payment

For bookings of 7 nights or less, we ask for payment on booking. For bookings exceeding 7 nights, we ask for 50% payment on booking, and 50% 8 weeks before your stay. When you send us a Booking Form via our own website, we send you a Booking Comfirmation, followed by a secure online payment request via CardSave, payable by debit or credit card. On receipt of payment authorisation, we always send a payment receipt.

Cancellation Policy

We ask that all prospective guests read our Conditions of Rental on our website before completing a Booking Form - our Cancellation Policy is clearly stated on that page.

Philip is a retired mechanical engineer, who travelled the world as a naval engineer for many years - living in Mexico and Belize for periods of time. He is an amateur historian, and has amazing local and Scottish historical knowledge... and, is also a keen 'treasure hunter' - going off frequently to local sites with his metal detector. I am an ex-copy editor who worked for over 20 years in the field of publishing, and then on a freelance basis as an editor/proofreader. We both enjoy travel, books, films. We decided, after meeting, that we couldn't bear to sell Philip's apartment in Pilrig House - it was just so special, and so we decided to turn it into a rental apartment. A year later, with great joy, we moved back into the house ourselves, then we purchased another apartment for renovation and rental, and so it just grew over the years since we started up. We have made many great friends, and still gain enormous joy and satisfaction in welcoming visitors here from around the world...It is also lovely that so many people come back time and time again.

Our emphasis, right from the start, was to create incredibly clean, and exceptionally comfortable, accommodation, with in excess of the usual facilities found in vacation rentals – and to maintain this high standard. We also wanted to ensure we met our guests’ needs, and so listened to our visitors and took on board, almost without exception, all comments and suggestions over the years. We always personally offer a warm welcome, and are really pleased to be able to provide further support your stay, if it is wanted! On arrival, we take you into the apartment, showing you all the need-to-know things, and will always take as long as you want to answer all your questions!

The Owner purchased this apartment in 1985

Well - there's the fact the Pilrig House is utterly unique as an historic 17th-century townhouse in Edinburgh, then there's the lovely location, and the parkland and Edinburgh skyline views... And the peace! Then, there's the wonderful ambience in the house itself - it really is special. And, the private parking, the beautiful gardens... there is so much to enjoy about living here. We just couldn't replicate what Pilrig House offers if we searched the length and breadth of Edinburgh. And the fact that we can walk into the centre of Edinburgh in 15 mins, or take a bus right outside the park... more than anything, we love the feeling of living in the country while living in the city.

In each apartment, the living-rooms and bedrooms have park and/or garden views – a lovely change from looking out onto city streets or other buildings! The house’s history also gives it a special feel – some people liken it to staying in a Scottish castle…

Robert Louis Stevenson’s mother lived in Pilrig House and he visited here often as a child – we include his novels in all three apartments, so you can read extracts that refer to Pilrig House, and imagine living in another time… One national newspaper journalist wrote after staying here that the house has a ‘timelessness’ that made for instant relaxation….

And, the centre of Edinburgh is under a mile away – most guests walk there, and sometimes take a bus home at the end of the day… and describe their pleasure at returning to the peace and tranquillity of Pilrig House. Great shops are almost on your doorstep – supermarkets, cafes, bars, restaurants… all within easy walking distance.

Many US & Canadian guests come back every year, and European guests visit at least 6 times per year – and they have stayed previously in the best hotels and now choose to stay here. Our Guestbook comments and reviews on all independent sites have been 100% positive - hopefully reassuring you of what you will find when you come to stay.

All of the above! We awaken to birdsong, can gaze out our windows and see the park in all seasons in all its beauty, or sit in the garden to the side of the house in total privacy and enjoy the tranquillity, and read a book... Everything we need is close-by - shops, transport links, restaurants, Edinburgh's main train station... and, there are beautiful drives to the East Lothian countryside and coastal trail, including some charming villages and historic castles - within a half-hour's drive. This coastline has 22 amazing golf-courses, many located directly parallel to the sea - Gullane, North Berwick, Craigielaw, Muirfield - to name but a few - to whet the appetite of those golfers out there!

Another great bonus is the fact that we can offer guests free parking in a private car park directly to the rear of the property – this is incredibly rare in Edinburgh – most properties have ‘metered’ parking on a street outside their property, which never guarantees a space, and is incredibly expensive – it means you have to top up the metre every couple of hours!

Philip and I often walk to the ‘Shore’ area of Leith, on the waterfront – which is Edinburgh’s port – a 5-10 minute walk from Pilrig House – it has great restaurants and bistros. You can also use your membership card to visit the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s ‘The Vaults’ premises here – even if you don’t like whisky – a great place to have a bar lunch in the oldest building in Leith.

Heavenly Stay!

My husband and I had the good sense and fortune to find the best place to stay in Edinburgh. It was the very first place I saw on VRBO and I looked no further! The stone building itself is a historical treasure surrounded by manicured gardens and looking over a landscaped park. The location is ideal for travelers, who like us, did not have a car. Walking to the bus-stop or to some of the best local restaurants in Leith took only minutes. The first day we walked to the Royal Botanical Gardens using the lovely Water of Leith Walkway and back home from the Sunday Farmers Market in Stockbridge. We also walked back to the apartment from the Royal Mile in under 15 minutes. When we wanted to take in the sights that were further away, we hired the the Pilrig House recommended driver, Mike, who not only drove us to and from the airport, but also drove us to one of the most scenic areas in Scotland, St Abbs Head, for birdwatching and hiking. Breathtaking! Mike will help you plan any trip of your liking or make recommendations of his own. Great guy! As for the spotless apartment, everything was provided (other than our own food), from bandaids to the addictive shortbread! We made all of our breakfasts, some lunches and dinners in the amply stocked kitchen. The accommodations were top notch, nothing run down. We felt we were the first to ever stay there. Finally, my reason for giving this review the title "Heavenly Stay" is because of the owner Phillip, who was our travel angel! He offered us a wealth of information from maps, brochures and his own humorous and knowladgable reviews. If he asks "Did you already pay for that?", you probably shouldn't do it. He will give you much better alternatives. But Phillip extended himself far beyond our best expectations. On several occasions he gave us a lift, once to a restaurant when it rained and even a small personal tour of historic Edinburgh. Phillip drove us to Leith Mills, (a great place to shop for discounted souvenirs) and walked into the store with us to point out the quality bargains! I know this isn't something to expect as a regular part of your stay but Phillip is just the kind of person who will do something helpful on spur of the moment. We didn't meet Debbie but she was my contact person and couldn't have been more gracious at every opportunity. It's a big world and I may never return to Edinburgh but for as long as I live the Pilrig House and it's owners are a highlight of my heavenly stay in Scotland.

Wonderful Wonderful!!!!!

My husband and I stayed at Pilrig House for our anniversary trip. It was the most wonderful experience. The house is so amazing inside and out. The grounds are just beautiful. But our hosts are what made it even more special. We are already planning our trip back next year. The morning after we got to Pilrig I sat in the window seat with a cup of tea looking out on the gardens and the yellow roses. The listing was perfect, it was just as it looked on the internet. It was beautifully maintained. We would definitively recommend Pilrig to anyone!

Exceptional property in wonderful location. Helpful hosts with an amazing attention to detail. From restaurant and shopping advice to travel maps for excursions. Have never stayed somewhere where they stocked fruit, coffee, tea, milk, cookies, fudge and whiskey for their visitors! Highly recommend!!

Loved my stay !

Felt lucky to have spent two weeks in the Garden apartment! The first week was as a solo traveler. I could not have felt more welcome and taken care of by Debbie and Phillip – perfect blend of privacy and security. The setting of Pilrig House is beautiful and peaceful – adored my views of Arthur’s Seat while sipping whiskey each evening. The kitchen was appointed with everything needed to produce a top notch meal if desired. Debbie has stocked this apartment with an amazing collection of DVDs, books, etc. You have to read the correspondence between the last surviving Balfour servant and Debbie – so sweet and interesting. The location of Pilrig House is excellent for catching a bus and exploring Edinburgh. Before my arrival, my daughter had contacted Debbie and together they had organized a Mother’s day tea at a top notch location. If I have the joy of returning to Edinburgh, I will stay here again. Phillip is also an excellent history source of the area and Pilrig House. Loved it! Thanks again, Phillip and Debbie!

Pilrig made our stay in Edinburgh memorable

Debbie and Philip were outstanding hosts making us feel welcome and comfortable. We used the city buses and explored many areas always "coming home" to comfort and ease. The house is so quiet we slept soundly. We appreciated all the extras Debbie and Philip provided including the trip to Tesco and the city tour.
Since arriving home to Canada we have recommeded Pilrig to all our friends.
I enjoyed a lovely lunch at Martin Wishart's restaurant in Leith. Next time I will book for the cooking demonstration prior to lunch.

The garden apartment was beautiful and fully equipped with all the amenities you would need. It’s very close to town so if you choose you can walk or catch the bus just around the corner and the bus services are very convenient and reliable. Debbie and Philip were very kind and nice hosts, Philip drove me to town to show me around on the first day to get myself familiar with the place and Debbie did also the same and also took me out in their beautiful small villages, very nice scenery around the ocean and everything in general is a must see. I had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend a visit to Edinburgh a city full of history and very beautiful. I’m planning to go back because there are lots of things to do and did not get a chance to finish all of them.

This entitles 4 adults to dine in either of the Society’s distinctive premises in Edinburgh – the historic Vaults at the Shore area of Leith - a 10-minute walk away, or in the city centre's beautiful Georgian townhouse Queen St premises - or to attend special events or tastings that may be on during your stay. Discover the best single cask, single malt whisky available to mankind – uniquely bottled for the Society from over 120 distilleries.

Near to the waterfront....

Pilrig House is under half a mile from the trendy 'Shore' area in the port of Leith - there are a great selection of pubs and eateries on the waterfront, as well as three Michelin-star restaurants. Also close-by is the Royal Yacht Britannia - the Queen and Prince Philip's decommissioned sailing vessel. Once here, you may want to stroll along to Newhaven Harbour and take lunch at the Loch Fyne Seafoood Restaurant, which has harbour and sea views.

Around a 4-min walk away is: Edinburgh's Woollen Mill and Clan Tartan centre - a great shop in which to pick up a bargain cashmere or Scottish gift; and the Water of Leith walkways and cycle-paths.

A short walk through the park takes you to the bus-stop - all buses (and they are plenty and almost constant) take you to the centre of Edinburgh, which is c. 1.2 miles away - easily walkable. En route, you may want to stop at the Sicilian Bakery - even if just to gaze in the window, or pause for coffee at Valvona & Crolla's Italian deli and 'Vin Cafe' - deliciously tempting!

The city centre attractions are well-known: Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace, the Grassmarket area, The National Gallery, The Scottish Portrait Gallery, The Museum of Scotland, the Georgian New Town.... and so much more!

We are a 15-min walk (or 5 mins by bus) to:

- Edinburgh's Botanical Gardens;

- the 'village' of Stockbridge - so-named for its riverside location & great range of independent shops and charity/second-hand shops - great for browsing for a bargain! A fab weekly farmers' market is also held here, plus a start-point to a lovely riverside walk that takes you through the historic Dean Village and on to the Gallery of Modern Art.

If you wanted to hire a cab, it is incredibly cheap to travel to and from the city centre.

For those guests without a car, we have negotiated fixed fares with a local cab company, to places of interest near to Edinburgh.

Within 5-mins' walk from Pilrig House are: a leisure/gym centre with pool; local shops, supermarket & restaurants; ATM; church; Post Office; Martin Wishart's Cookery School (Michelin-star restaurant owner), an auction-house with weekly auctions.

Pilrig House is also a 10-min walk from the Playhouse Theatre, and a multi-screen cinema.

FREE Parking is also available to guests of Pilrig House, in a private car park to the rear of the property - this is extremely rare in Edinburgh and a huge bonus! We have prepared a Touring Pack for those guests with cars - which gives recommendations, maps, photographs, and tips of places to visit within a 1-2-hour drive of Edinburgh. Our AA-Road Atlas also comes in handy - and you are welcome to take it with you on your car journeys.

East Lothian

Pilrig House is a great central base for golfers – wthin a half-hour drive along the lovely East Lothian coastline, you will be spolied for choice of courses to play: Craigielaw, Gullane, Archerfield, Muirfield, Dunbar, North Berwick – to name but a few of the outstanding 22 courses to pick from.

St Andrews and the East ‘Neuk’ of Fife

We are only an hour-and-a-half’s drive from St Andrews for St Andrews Old Course and King’s Barns, as well as the ‘East Neuk’ of Fife courses en route to St Andrews, eg Lundin Links.

Gleneagles, Carnoustie and Troon

We are an hour’s drive from Gleneagles; an hour-and-a-half from Carnousite; and c. 2 hours from the Ayrshire coast for Troon Old Course and Turnberry.

Book Our Golf Driver Service

If you want to relax, and be collected at Pilrig House and taken to and from the courses you want to play on, we are delighted to recommend, on booking, a personal driver service with an outstanding driver/golf expert – (at extremely competitive rates). Mike will collect you at Pilrig House (as early in the morning as you want to set off) in his air-conditioned, fully insured and extremely comfortable people carrier and take you wherever you want to play. He can also take you further afield, and arrange overnight stays for you. In fact, where golf is concerned, he will take you as far and for as much time as you fancy!

If our Garden Apartment is booked for the dates you want, we will be happy to offer our Park/Balfour Apartment at a reduced rate.

For guests staying longer than 1 week the price includes a weekly clean & you will receive fresh bedlinen & towels.

We offer solo travellers a 10% discount on the nightly rate.
For bookings of 7 nights or less, we ask for payment on booking.

For bookings exceeding 7 nights, we ask for 50% on booking, and 50% 8 weeks before your stay.

After you send us a Booking Form via our website, we send your booking confirmation, followed by an online payment request (by either credit, including AMEX!, or by debit card).

On receipt of your payment, we will send you a receipt.
