Our exceptional 4-star graded, 2-bedroomed Park Apartment is within Pilrig House, an A-listed, 17th-century Scottish townhouse (built in 1638), which has a distinguished history and a wonderful literary connection - it was the home of Robert Louis Stevenson's mother's family - as a child, RLS often visited and played in the gardens here as a child - he mentions Pilrig House in his novels: Kidnapped and Catriona.

The apartment is sited in a tranquil park, yet, incredibly, it is only a 15-20 minute stroll (just over a mile), or 5 minutes by bus (bus stop is only minutes away from the apartment) to Edinburgh's city centre and all the main attractions. Booking Conditions

Open all year. The apartment is non-smoking, but you are welcome to smoke outside, and, sorry, no pets.

Payment

For bookings of 7 nights or less, we ask for payment on booking. For bookings exceeding 7 nights, we ask for 50% payment on booking, and 50% 8 weeks before your stay. On completing a Booking Form via our website, we send you a Booking Confirmation, followed by a secure online payment request via CardSave (you can pay by credit or debit card).

Cancellation Policy

We ask all prospective guests to complete a Booking Form via our own website, and that they read our Conditions of Rental page before doing so. The cancellation policy is clearly stated on that page.

Rates

Please view our highly competitive nightly & reduced rates on our owner's website (we feel it is disingenuous to show 'per person per night' rates that do not convey the true min. price of a stay). And, there are absolutely no extra add-on taxes or 'hidden' charges.

Readers - we liked it so much we got married here. Yes, that's us on the Park Apartment stairacse entrance above.

Philip is a retired mechanical engineer, who travelled the world as a naval engineer for many years - living in Mexico and Belize for several years. He is an amateur historian, and has amazing local and Scottish historical knowledge... and, is also a keen 'treasure hunter' - goes off frequently to local sites with his metal detector.

I am an ex-copy editor who worked for over 20 years in the field of publishing, and then on a freelance basis as an editor/proofreader. We both enjoy travel, books, films and, life in general.

We decided, after meeting, that we couldn't bear to sell Philip's apartment in Pilrig House - it was just so special, and so we decided to turn it into a rental apartment. A year later, with great joy, we moved back into the house ourselves, then we purchased another apartment for renovation & rental, and so it just grew over the years since we started up.

We have made many great friends, and still gain enormous joy & satisfaction in welcoming visitors here from around the world. It is lovely that so many visitors, including increasing numbers of solo women travellers, come back time & time again.

Our emphasis, right from the start, was to create incredibly clean & exceptionally comfortable accommodation, with in excess of the usual facilities found in vacation rentals – and to maintain this high standard. We also wanted to ensure we met our guests’ needs, and so listened & took on board, almost without exception, all comments/suggestions over the years. We always personally offer a warm welcome, & are really pleased to be able to provide further support during your stay, if wanted! On arrival, we take you into the apartment, showing you all the need-to-know things, and will always take as long as you want to answer all your questions – it is nice to meet the owner and to know we are on-hand should you need us.

Well - there's the fact the Pilrig House is utterly unique as an historic 17th-century townhouse in Edinburgh, then there's the lovely location, and the parkland and Edinburgh skyline views... And the peace! Then, there's the wonderful ambience in the house itself - it really is special. And, the private parking, the beautiful gardens... there is so much to enjoy about living here. We just couldn't replicate what Pilrig House offers if we searched the length and breadth of Edinburgh. And the fact that we can walk into the centre of Edinburgh in 15-20 mins, or take a bus right outside the park... more than anything, we love the feeling of living in the country while living in the city.

In each apartment, the living-rooms and bedrooms have park and/or garden views – a lovely change from looking out onto city streets or other buildings! The house’s history also gives it a special feel – some people liken it to staying in a Scottish castle…

Robert Louis Stevenson’s mother lived in Pilrig House and he visited here and played in the gardens as a child – we include his novels in all three apartments, so you can read extracts that refer to Pilrig House, and imagine living in another time…

One national newspaper journalist wrote, after staying here, that the house has a ‘timelessness that made for instant relaxation…'

And, the centre of Edinburgh is under a mile away – most guests walk there, and sometimes take a bus home at the end of the day… and describe their pleasure at returning to the peace and tranquillity of Pilrig House. Great shops are almost on your doorstep – supermarkets, cafes, bars, restaurants… all within easy walking distance.

We have many US and Canadian guests who come back every year, and European guests who visit at least 6 times per year – and they have stayed previously in the best hotels and now choose to stay here. Location. Location. Location. We awaken to birdsong, can gaze out our windows & see the park in all seasons & ever-changing colours, or sit in the garden to the side of the house in total privacy & enjoy the tranquillity.

Everything we need is close-by: great local independent shops, supermarkets, bus stops, restaurants (especially in the nearby waterfront 'Shore' area), Playhouse theatre, Martin Wishart's Cook School, gym & leisure centre (with fab pool), multi-screen cinema, library, bank, post office, a fab Sicilian bakery, great Italian deli and cafe - Valvona & Crolla, walks/cycle-path along the Water of Leith walkways, Edinburgh's Waverley train station - to list a few of the local amenities...

The nearby East Lothian coastal trail - only a half-hour drive away, has a host of charming villages and historic castles.

22 wonderful golf-courses along the above coastline - eg Gullane, North Berwick, Craigielaw, Muirfield, Archerfield, Dunbar - for golf fans out there! Or drive to nearby St Andrews Old Course & get snapped on the bridge...

FREE PARKING!!

Another great bonus is our free parking in a private car park directly to the rear of the property – you can bring your golf clubs! - this is incredibly rare in Edinburgh – most properties have ‘metered’ on-street parking on a street outside/near their property, which never guarantees a space, and is incredibly expensive – you have to top up the metre every couple of hours!

Philip and I often walk to the ‘Shore’ area of Leith, on the waterfront – which is Edinburgh’s port – a 5-10 minute walk from Pilrig House – it has great restaurants and bistros. You can also use your membership card to visit the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s ‘The Vaults’ premises here – even if you don’t like whisky – a great place to have a bar lunch in the oldest building in Leith (at local bar-lunch prices).

Above and Beyond...

My friend and I traveled to the UK for a month this past summer and stayed at three different rental homes (on Loch Ness, Edinburgh & London). We spent 9 days, in the middle of our trip, at Pilrig House. Unfortunately (wink, wink), the standards set by the hosts of this particular place spoiled us terribly and made the two other rentals pale by comparison. All of the raves and effusive comments written by every one of the reviewers here are 100% accurate, and so I won’t repeat all the merits about the apartment, its location, comfort, etc. What everyone else said: All True!

Instead, I’d like to write about the remarkable personal care and attention of Phillip and (in our particular case) Debbie. Others have remarked at great length about their care, but this really was something else. In the middle of my stay I needed to see a doctor and emailed Debbie at night to ask for a recommendation. She phoned immediately to ask if I needed any OTC medicine or assistance. She offered to phone her clinic at 8 the next morning, and made an appointment for me. She drove us there at the appointed time, and picked us up afterwards. I needed to go to a larger hospital across town and she drove us there. Because hospitals only accept cash from non-residents, and I wasn’t sure if I had enough, Debbie stopped at an ATM and withdrew the daily limit, handing me an envelope of £350. Can you IMAGINE? I was just flabbergasted, and I continue to tell the story. Above and beyond, indeed! There are so many more stories of their kindness and generosity (a surprise, and very generous, birthday gift & card, left on the front steps one morning; the loan of a GPS--the car rental co. wanted £15 a day for it; secretly helping my sister-in-law plan a BIG birthday surprise in Edinburgh, from Florida... and MORE), but you’ll see this all for yourself when you come to stay at their lovely apartment. I envy you that...

ps. Oh, and one more thing to add... The front door of the house, pictured in the main photo, is YOUR front door, exclusively. How exciting that was! Not even sure where the other inhabitants of the house enter and exit, but it made us feel very special, walking out of that door, down those steps and out into the beautiful park in front of it every day. Lovely!

The Best Accommodations You Will Ever Find!

I don't know where to begin. The park apartment was fabulous. It was like the owners anticipated our every need and desire. There was an extensive video library, every map and tour guide one could ever use, beautiful fresh flowers, fruit, and even scotch! The linens were luxurious, the kitchen expertly furnished and the bathroom was well appointed. Every single thing was perfect. But wait! The host, Philip, could not have been more welcoming or generous with his time. He drove us to a good restaurant when we arrived famished and drove us around another time showing us many beautiful views. He was a wealth of information and delightfully witty. Thank you, Philip! Thanks also, Debbie for being there to answer our questions. I sincerely hope to return to Pilrig House and it can't be soon enough.

A lot of planning went into our trip to Scotland. I chose Pilrig House because I liked the fact that it was close to Edinburgh and yet opposite the park, so you had had the best of both worlds...the city and the country. Pilrig House is also close to Leith, an interesting place in it's own right. The population of Edinburgh in August doubles during Festival time and it was nice to get back to the Pilrig House after a hectic day in Edinburgh. Debbie and Philip were so helpful and the apartment (we stayed in the Park Apartment...which has a lovely view of the park) has everything you could possible want. It felt like we were going home and there was something about the short bus ride into town and then walking through the park to Pilrig House that made us feel like we actually lived there rather than just being tourists. As I mentioned the apartment lacked for nothing in terms of amenities. There were a wide selection of guide books, maps and other information you would want during your stay, not to mention a great DVD video library! If you had a specific need that wasn't covered, Debbie or Philip would be happy to provide the information based on their extensive knowledge and experience. Staying at Pilrig House was a big part of making this trip such an amazing experience.

We enjoyed our stay at the Park Apartment in Pilrig House. The apartment was clean and cheerful with fresh flowers. Philip welcomed us on arrival and was very helpful. The first evening he saw us out walking and gave us a ride to our restaurant as well as showed us other nearby places to visit. We could not have asked for a better host. We emailed with Debbie, and spoke with her by phone and she was also very helpful. I got the impression they really like what they do. The location facing Pilrig Park was very pleasant. Nice big trees, green space, families walking with children to the nearby playground, people walking their dogs, and two evenings we watched lively cricket matches from the living room window. The surroundings felt safe. We liked being out of the strictly touristy areas. While Pilrig is certainly walking distance to city center or the shore, be advised it is a long walk. We found it worth it to either drive or hire a cab most days. The Park apartment was very comfortable and we appreciated having the kitchen already stocked with tea bags, cookies/biscuits, and fudge when we arrived! They have thought of every detail to make it very comfortable and home like. The only minor issue we had was ventilation. If we closed the bedroom doors at night to sleep, there was not enough air flow even with a window opened and condensation formed inside the windows. We learned by trial and error to keep doors and windows open any time we were there, regardless of outside temperature. (mid-May) I liked how the windows had brackets on the side so when engaged, they could not be opened wider from the outside. We appreciated having every possible map, and tourist information all organized and at our fingertips in the apartment. We rented a car without navigation and used the atlas to get us to the Glasgow Science Center. The dvd and book selection was nice also. We can certainly recommend staying in the Park apartment, and would consider staying there again ourselves if we return to Edinburgh! Of all the wonderful things we saw in Edinburgh, the most surprising thing was how much we all enjoyed the Botanical Gardens...including our 24 year old son with us. We only had a few hours there, but wish we had planned a whole day there! We really enjoyed Valvona & Crolla Cafe, Tapas restaurant, as well as some very good take out fresh pizza on the main road a few blocks away. Happy travels!

The walk to town for some feels long - just over a mile - and for some it is a stroll! The walk to the waterfront area is just over half a mile - around an 8-min walk at a leisurely pace. It is perhaps worth mentioning to readers, that there is also a bus-stop at the exit to the park (a few mins' walk away), and buses travel to town every few mins. Plus, a taxi for 3 people comes to around the same price as three solo bus fares... However, for people unused to walking, or unwilling to use public transport, we often advocate city centre rentals - but then you'd have the traffic noise and not this lovely park location...

In the last 7 years, we have never experienced a problem re ventilation with any other guests - but, we are sorry you were troubled by this. There is a fan in the bathroom & kitchen, and all windows open, while the apartment retains cool and heat. We also provide fans in each bedroom. The temperature in Scotland is such that air-conditoning is rarely required!!

With the added bonus of FREE parking (very rare for Edinburgh!), you also have the benefit of being able to take some beautiful drives in the nearby countryside, or even further afield - we have a specially created file for those people with cars which gives great recommendations, tips, maps and photographs of places to visit within a 2-hour boundary of Edinburgh. Our AA-touring atlas also comes in handy, and you are welcome to take it with you on your jourmeys.

For those of you who don't want to drive on the 'wrong side of the road', nor to take organised bus tours, we are delighted to be able to offer a personal driver service, at very competitive rates.

We have also negotiated 'fixed fares', with a local cab company, to take you to some other places of interest within an hour's drive of Edinburgh.

Golfers

East Lothian

Pilrig House is a great central base for golfers – wthin a half-hour drive along the lovely East Lothian coastline, you will be spolied for choice of courses to play: Craigielaw, Gullane, Archerfield, Muirfield, Dunbar, North Berwick – to name but a few of the outstanding 22 courses to pick from.

St Andrews and the East ‘Neuk’ of Fife

We are only an hour-and-a-half’s drive from St Andrews for St Andrews Old Course and King’s Barns, as well as the ‘East Neuk’ of Fife courses en route to St Andrews, eg Lundin Links.

Gleneagles, Carnoustie and Troon

We are an hour’s drive from Gleneagles; an hour-and-a-half from Carnousite; and c. 2 hours from the Ayrshire coast for Troon Old Course and Turnberry.

If you want to relax, and be collected at Pilrig House and taken to and from the courses you want to play on, we are delighted to recommend, on booking, a personal driver service with an outstanding driver/golf expert – (at extremely competitive rates). Mike will collect you at Pilrig House (as early in the morning as you want to set off) in his air-conditioned, fully insured and extremely comfortable people carrier and take you wherever you want to play. Mike can also take you further afield, and arrange overnight stays for you. In fact, where golf is concerned, he will take you as far and for as much time as you fancy!

Additional information about rental rates

For bookings of 7 nights or less, we ask for full payment on booking.

For bookings in excess of 7 nights, we ask for 50% payment on booking, and 50% 8 weeks before your stay.

On booking, via the Booking Form on our website, we send your booking confirmation, followed by an online payment request (we accept CR cards, including AMEX!, and debit cards. On receipt of your payment, we send a receipt.
Notes The rates are all-inclusive - there are no add-on charges and fees.

The rate includes: bedblinen, towels, Wi-Fi, parking, utilities.

For guests staying in excess of 7 nights, the rate includes a weekly clean when you will be given fresh bedlinen and towels.
