Plan ahead for a colorful autumn or activity-filled winter vacation. From late September to late October the mountains are dazzling with color. In winter the leaves are gone from the trees, revealing even more of our view to include some of the Presidential summits. We are near six ski resorts and hundreds of miles of maintained hiking, cross-country and downhill ski trails in the Mt. Washington Valley and White Mountain region. Enjoy the 'pumpkin people' displays, chocolate festival, ice carving contest, and dog sled race. Take an ice climbing lesson on a frozen waterfall, go on a full moon snowshoe hike with a naturalist guide to learn about owls, ride a tram to a mountaintop. You might even want to come back!

I was born in NH and love the mountains. For work I direct a global connections center for a college near Boston, and in my spare time I lead hiking and kayaking trips in New Hampshire and internationally as a volunteer for the Appalachian Mountain Club. I try to hike a mountain a month.
I couldn't resist the mountain views and dramatically changing seasons. There's a sense of wilderness combined with New England village life. We occasionally see moose grazing by the side of the road. There are good local breweries and a bakery with fabulous breads and granola. An organic market with smoothies, sandwiches and a raw chocolate bar is within a couple of miles.
This is a peaceful place surrounded by natural beauty and year-round activities. There is a lot to do but sometimes the day passes just watching the sky changing over the mountains with the mind at rest. At dawn the sun sometimes casts a red glow on the Moat Mountains. If you are an experienced hiker, I recommend trying the 9.7-mile trek across the Moats. Nearby, the Diana's Baths trail is wheelchair accessible and 1/2 mile each way to the waterfalls. The outdoor pool and tennis courts are a 3-minute walk from our condo door. Swim at night and gaze at the stars while you're floating. On a cool night, fire up the wood stove and settle in for a cozy evening.
