Some houses just have 'it.'
'It' being that romance, comfort and sense of home that just makes you want to snuggle in and stay forever.
Some of it has to do with the dramatic contrast between inside and out. From the luxe, stylish and home-y interior, you step out into the jaw-dropping grandeur of fifteen private, boulder-strewn acres. Private hiking trails and climbing opportunities abound. Days are brilliant and glorious, and at night, sunsets and starscapes envelop you in magic. Peace, silence, vastness, freedom and the electric energy of the desert vortex have drawn people to this area since the days of the Chemeheuvi.
Inside, Boulder House offers a level of luxury, detail and sophistication rarely seen in such a stark, remote location.
There are rooms of sheer rock. Sleek handrails carved to look like snakes. Floors hand painted with Dia de los Muertos skulls. Artisan-designed concrete countertops with Mexican tile detail. Original paintings, prints and photos are everywhere. And every rug, blanket, placemat, vase, serving piece, coffee cup, etc, is chosen with care to create a uniform, highly developed, intensely enchanting space.
It's a big, rambling house filled with cozy nooks for sleeping, reading , drawing, hanging out. We can sleep 14 people in beds. There's a fully equipped kitchen, cable TV and wireless internet throughout. Rock-solid and gorgeous (green!) woodstove (wood provided) for nights around the fire. Powerful, dual zone heat and air, atmospheric lighting, iPod dock and speakers, comfy beds with top-quality linens, DISH network on two televisions, reliable wireless, free domestic and Canadian landline service ...basically, everything you need to feel at home.
Outside, there are a number of lovely patios and comfortable seating areas. There's a private, walled jacuzzi outside the master, a full-size pool ( not heated) , gas barbecue and an outdoor shower with a view of the entire desert floor.
Boulder House is so much more than just a place to sleep.
It's a place to awaken.

As a director and an artist, it's not surprising that the visuals were what got us. The road wound up through the desert, the yuccas and Joshua trees becoming more and more plentiful as the signs of civilization retreated. There was Pioneertown itself, perfect as a movie set (well, it was a movie set, duh!), Pappy and Harriet's, and then, of course, the boulders themselves - massive, majestic, at once welcoming and foreboding.

The house itself. Of course we appreciate the cool, minimalist modernism of so many brilliantly designed or re-thought desert cabins. But for ourselves, we wanted something a little warmer, cozier. Something that felt more like home. Boulder House, with its four bedrooms ( five if you count the guest bed in the computer room), living room, dining room, TV room, outbuildings and pool, felt right. It had intimate spaces, private spaces, hang-out spaces, outside spaces, places to play and places to work. It sprawled over fifteen acres and had views of washes, a stream, the lights of Yucca Valley far in the distance. It was everything we had been looking for, and it was two hours from Los Angeles. It was home. Ours, and now, if you like, yours. Welcome.
Boulder House is a handmade house representing thousands of hours of work by various artists and craftspeople who poured their lives, labor, and love into their sanctuary in the desert. Whatever passion leads you to the desert, we invite you to add your spirit to those of the Native Americans, cowboys, ranchers, dreamers, artists, and visionaries who have blessed Boulder House with theirs.
If you would like to contribute a colorful piece of broken ceramic to our broken ceramic garden bed, please feel free.
If you would like to document the contribution in our guestbook, or on Facebook, we would love to hear from you!
I just wanted to thank you for allowing us to rent the house last weekend. We all had an incredible time and sincerely hope to return soon! That place really has a special energy both based on location and aesthetic.
THANK YOU so much for what was one of the best weekends me and my friends have had in years. The house was BEAUTIFUL and perfect for us. We loved every minute of it, used it fully and felt very at home there. We also made every effort to leave it as we found it and hope you will find we had great respect for the property.
We had such a lovely time in fact that we want to make this an annual trip — we'd love to rent the house again next year around the same time if it all works out. I also want to rent this space for future artist retreats and workshops. I just love it.
The art, the colors, the energy, the pool, such a delicious experience! Thank you!!!!!
Wow. I have heard about Boulder House for a long time. The artwork and the location are what initially drew me to the site. The entire house is a piece of art. It is liberating to be surrounded by nature's beauty, just outside the doors, and human's beauty in the exquisite interior design and architecture of this space. I stayed for 4 days and I wish I could have stayed longer! The beds are comfortable and each bedroom has a unique, charming decor. Sunsets are the enterainment; don't miss the sunsets if you go. I will most definitely return! Thank you for creating this gorgeous and one-of-a-kind space and for sharing it with the world!
I had my wedding here last summer and it was magical in so many ways. The property and views that this house is on are breathtaking. There are opportunities to take easy strolls around boulders and Joshua Trees or you can just walk out the front door and sit on any of the wonderfully placed outside sitting areas and soak in the sunrise or sunset. There is pretty much a panoramic view of boulders and Joshua Tree beauty. It is far enough away from other things that you see tons of stars and night, no one ever bothers you or see's you...you really feel like you are in your own beautiful secluded desert spot. And that is not even mentioning the HOUSE itself! Which is the most unique and creatively decorated place I have EVER been to!!! IT IS SIMPLY INCREDIBLE the attention to detail. The woman who runs this house is a true artist and she has put a great bold and colorful, day of the dead, mexican folk bold color touch to everything. I basically did not have to do hardly any decorating for the wedding. Everything from the dishes, to the cabinets, to the outside patio plants are festive and unique.
Then, there is the comfort. This house is luxury for sure. The beds are amazing. The house sleeps so many people comfortably and in a variety of different bedrooms for different needs.
And then of course there is a pool with a stunning view, and a hot tub where you can relax and watch the moon rise or the starts sparkle. I will go back for sure, this is the best spot to stay at in Joshua Tree for all sorts of reasons, it takes everything to the next level of enjoyment and beauty.
There's magic everywhere!!! We blasted off from the boulders to the stars and came back again all in one weekend. Thank you for sharing such a special place. The house was mesmerizing. We definitely hope to come for another visit:)
We got married in the area and put up all my New York friends at the Boulder House. There's nothing quite like driving a bunch of Brooklynites down the single track dirt road weaving around boulders to the end of the world only to end up in the courtyard of this very weird and wonderful house. It was like Indiana Jones walking through the slot canyon into Petra. OK, maybe that's a little much, but it's a pretty great reveal.
The pictures don't do it justice, especially the boulder room, which, it's worth repeating, is BUILT INTO THE REAL LEGITIMATE ROCK. The whole thing was a bit of a shock to everyone, not being particularly used to quiet at all, let alone desert silence at poolside. Things that kept coming up in the rave reviews: the quiet, the pool, the desert view as seen from the hot tub framed by a well placed cutout in the wall, the art (my friend who writes about comic books excitedly showed off cellphone pictures of a gigantic painting of the Green Lantern - so there really is something for everyone.) This is a very, very cool house, clearly built by cool people and owned by cool people. I've never seen anyplace quite like it and I'm looking for an opportunity to go back.
They were actually easy to deal with. they sent me all the documents on time, I didnt have that issue. The place is a wonder, its a must see. The art inside, well the whole place is one big piece of art. We are going again in the near future. That being said there are three things that could have been improved. the oven was non functioning. The pool was a funk color untill it miraculously cleared up the next day. Also I know what a hard task it is to have a pool out there. The trash was pretty full and we had to improvise during clean up. We got our deposit back no hassles. My brother and I look back at his batchlor party with great smiles on our faces.
The Pipes Canyon area is uniquely blessed with sweeping vistas, dramatic boulders, lots of native artifacts, wistful abandoned cabins, and some of the only flat-top mesas in the State of California.
From your front door, you can hike our 15 uninterrupted acres, or try the beautiful trails at Pipes Canyon Preserve, or, of course, the Park.
Stargazing and sunsets are unparalleled here. Check local sites for info re : wildflower and meteor shower timing.
