We have many of his personal items on display here--- his dance shoes, top hat, his Tony Award for Best Actor, house keys, address book, photos with many celebrities and US Presidents, family members, etc. A special edition DVD is available in our library as well.
For those with other tastes in amusement we have an extensive library of humor books--Dilbert, Calvin and Hobbs, Doonsbury, Cathy, Farside, Garfield, New Yorker, P.G. Wodehouse, etc. There is also a section of non- fiction books, cookbooks, Cape Cod guidebooks, New England gardening, top fiction and a wonderful children's book collection and some quaint vintage such as Nancy Drew series. Another shelf has over 100 Dvds many of them Hi Def as well as many Cds for musical pleasure. The are numerous games, puzzles and poker for those inclined in 2 cupboards. Plus a 46' HD TV with Comcast cable in the main living room. The house is professionally cleaned from 10-3pm before each Sat. changeover. We provide a beautiful vase gorgeous flowers from our gardens upon check in.
HISTORY: In 1940 the original cottage was built to serve as lodging for the Worsely family during duck hunting season, for its proximity to the marsh and waters of Nauset Inlet. In 1996 it was purchased by Mark Picton, a profesional builder, who built the current main house as a 2,800 sq ft 'addition' to the original cottage. The two houses are connected by a wide hallway & french doors and the Ray Bolger memorabilia display cabinet. His latest project, a beautiful house in Ct., very similar to ours, was featured in the November 2009 issue of Fine Homebuilding Magazine.
For the Pictons, being an avid boating, fishing and surfing family, the location was ideal, as the boat launching area into thousands of acres of the Nauset harbor and marsh system is only about 200 feet from the end of the driveway. The calm water is also now a favorite place for kayakers and Standup Paddle boarders, which can be rented by the half or full day in Orleans.
The majestic waves of the open ocean at Nauset Beach are only a walk over the dune from the boat launching area. We, Richard and Ann purchased the property at the end of October, 2009. We have now also totally remodeled the original 800 sq f cottage, for a total 3,450 sq ft. Plus the 4 furnished decks.
HISTORY CONTINUED: The purchase of this property was enabled by the sale of LagoonHouse (www.lagoonhouse.com ) in Hawaii which we developed into one of the most successful vacation rentals in Hawaii, top 10 vacation rentals in the world!! You can check out the website and read our guest book entries ending in 2009, to understand that we have a long history of generous hospitality. We believe THIS wonderful beach house has the potential to provide families with a true Cape Cod vacation experience that also will also be remembered & cherished for many years. Richard has owned bayfront homes in Wellfleet and Eastham that were used as vacation rentals to the delight of his guests for nearly 20 years. Ann has owned vacation rentals in Hawaii, and has the perfect touch for eliminating any annoyances and maximizing the great and small pleasures of a home away from home. It gives us great satisfaction to hear those words 'BEST VACATION EVER!'.
( And please, to honor our guests with allergies, no smoking or pets are allowed.)
Please contact us the owners for more information, photos, contract details, future availability, etc.
Because this is such a great house for entertaining, we have a limit of only 10 guests to maintain it's fine condition. We do not rent for graduation, weddings or other parties, nor to underage individuals.
There is a property manager to help with any of your questions or concerns. In the meantime, we are happy to email you lots more photos.
The large walkout basement /rec room also has 2 sofas, a lounge and loveseat with a pool table AND a ping pong table for lots of family fun. There are beach chairs, boogie boards, lots of beach toys, & a cute red wagon to use to pull them down to the water.
Despite the addition of the 800 sq ft completely remodeled original 1940' s beach house, we are still limiting the number of guests to just 10. Please no pets, no smoking. Not even medical marijuana. Smoke smells linger and are bothersome to others who might have allergies.
As usual on the Cape, we do not provide sheets or towels, but do offer plenty of pillows and blankets. For those not wanting to bring their own, the linen charge is $15 per person and all linens must be left clean & folded at checkout.
If you are interested in 2015 please let us know as we always book up early. The rates will be $5,300 for the 8 summer weeks, much less for June & Sept. As we receive deposit checks, we will block out the weeks that are reserved. One thing that makes this house unique is that you have the big, main 3 bedroom, 3 bath house (2,800 sq ft) & also the remodeled beach cottage. This adds another 800 sq ft of a total private space with it's own kitchenette with full refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven, granite breakfast bar, plus dining/living room area, twin bedroom, full bath, daybed,etc--all on the first floor. There are 4 decks, both covered and uncovered, another 610sq'.
This is perfect for grandaprents or others who want to be with the gang but enjoy some space too. The houses are linked by a pretty breezeway & french doors and it has private outside entrances also. The main house and the cottage will never be rented separately.
As you can see, the weeks for summer of 2015 are getting booked. (2 more are awaiting returned contracts.) If you have a big family and are serious about renting this house, it is better to act early or risk disappointed as the remaining weeks are claimed. The shoulder season of May/June and Sept/Oct are much less expensive but equally nice as there are fewer crowds but still lots to do.
2500 characters will not allow me to do this home justice. Lets start out by saying that Richard and Ann are amazing people that value your experience in their home and are invested in your stay and enjoyment. The house is immaculate, spacious, and chalked full of amenities. The home features 4 decks (the 4th deck is on the roof and offers an amazing view of the surrounding area and Nauset Inlet), a large kitchen, large dining room table, large sitting room/family room with flat screen TV and cable. Toys, toys, toys for the kids to enjoy. A selection of games and 4 bedrooms. The main house has 3 bedrooms and an adjoined cottage has an additional bedroom, kitchenette and sitting room. This is a great house for a large party. We had 5 adults and 2 children there comfortably with room to spare. All of your beach needs are there (umbrellas, chairs, toys, coolers, etc etc etc). There is ping pong and pool, and outdoor shower and a big yard that the kids can run around in. Oh there is also a large selection of books and DVDs that can be enjoyed as well. Just a great place to stay.
From a activities perspective, you are a short walk from Nauset Inlet which is a calm ocean cove that is somewhat rocky (I would recommend aqua socks or some kind of strapped sandal), but features an array of creatures (horse shoe crabs, hermit crabs, birds, fish and snails) to observe. The calm water is shallow and great for kids. We spent an afternoon out there an it was great. The community features access to Nauset Beach, but it is a little more of a walk and features climbing down a steep set of stairs and making a trek over a boardwalk that is long to get to the beach, but its FREE to those that go in season. For people like me that went off season, we just packed up the van for a short 5 min drive down to the public access point and walked right onto the beach without much of a walk (and it was Free, but on season it is $15/day). Nauset Beach features surf that you could go surfing in but a great sandy beach that can be enjoyed by all. During our visit we observed several pods of seals swimming by. You are a 5-10 min drive into Orleans Center, which features 2 grocery stories, many great restaurants and other things to do.
Overall it was a great stay and I would highly recommending staying at this property if you are in the market for a Cape Cod house. The property is clean, well maintained, historic, full of amenities and is great for families.
Our time at the house was wonderful. It was impeccably clean and had fresh flowers to welcome us from the beautiful gardens. The house has everything you can possibly need from comfortable rooms, everything imaginable in the kitchen, great outdoor grill, private yard with outdoor furniture and the beach is walking distance. You couldn't ask for anything more. We have rented the house for 3 years and hope to continue the tradition. Richard and Ann have a beautiful house and are extremely gracious hosts.
Ann and Richard are wonderful and the house is incredible. Sparkling clean upon arrival. The house is close to everything and is equipped with anything you could possibly need and more. We are 5 friends and this was our 3rd year celebrating Memorial Day in this fabulous home. Charming and we look forward to returning every year.

The best! Our big group - including kids ages 4 thru 9 y/o was able to spread out and enjoy this thoughtful appointed and beautifully furnished home. Toys and games galore for kids both for in house and for beach and a kitchen our eat at home families felt "at home" in! We've stayed in LOTS of houses in Orleans and this one was by far the most ideal fit for us.
Committed to their guests having a terrific vacation, Ann and Richard are wonderful and keep a comfy, cottage feel in a grand house. Modern bathrooms (though we all preferred the super outdoor shower!), extremely well equipped kitchen, game room basement, multiple decks to catch the morning and afternoon sun and a HUGE yard for croquet, running, bunny watching and more. With Priscilla Landing steps from the driveway and Nauset Beach a short walk away we hit the beaches daily using the house boogie and skim boards and vast selection of beach chairs and sand toys. They have it ALL. Our vacation wasn't even over before we decided we'd book for next year! That says it all.
This was truly a fantastic house. The layout is great with plenty of room for a large family. The cottage is a wonderful space. It was perfect for our grandmothers to share and have their own kitchen and sitting room away from all the activity of the rest of our family. The kitchen is fully equipped which made it great for the couple of nights we decided to eat in.(Great dishwasher too!).The grounds are beautiful with a nice size backyard with croquet set or just nice for soccer, etc. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the woodwork inside is lovely.
And of course location. Short walk to bay type beach and nice access to Naussett beach to get the waves. Also, close to restaurants in Orleans and tennis courts too. We loved this place and can't wait to come back. We have been renting homes on the Cape for over 20 years and everyone thought this was the best house ever!
This is the second year the gals have rented this beautiful home. The house is immaculate with everything we needed for a weekend of relaxation, cooking and fun. The house is close to the beach (a must for me) and has excellent views from the rooftop balcony. Ann and Richard are attentive and see that we have everything we need. Fresh flowers awaited us upon arrival and we even received fresh greens from their spectacular garden. Wireless technology is also a big plus. We definitely plan to return next year.
Our location in East Orleans is very desirable & convenient for great walking/exploring famous Nauset Beach. Nauset Beach is always voted one of the top 10 beaches in the US--over 10 miles of gorgeous white sand and dunes. There is great kayaking, canoeing and boating here, just 200' from the house!! Up the street, Nauset Beach public parking has 900 parking spaces with several lifeguards, clam shack, restrooms, etc and is just 1.5 m. from the house. Nearby Rock Harbor is known for amazing sunsets and charter fishing tours. About 1/3 of Orleans is salt water bays and inlets and there are beautiful fresh water lakes also. The world famous Bird Watchers General Store is located in our town of Orleans is very amusing and carries any manner of bird related objects. The owner is an author of an informative & humorous book ' Why Don't Woodpeckers Get headaches?' Because we use no poisons, our yard also has many tame bunnies and has been frequented by beautiful foxes, wild turkeys, etc.
Cape Cod is definitely one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is home to great beaches, majestic dunes, scenic roadways, historic homes, harbors, coves and much, much more. For many decades, the Cape has been a destination for family vacations, weddings and reunions of every type. Orleans and the immediate area offer plenty of fun things to do for all ages. Beaching, boating, sailing, surfing, fishing, golfing, shopping, antiquing and just relaxing to name a few--as well as great local food and fabulous seafood.
Golf on Cape Cod is also a favorite among visitors to our beautiful area.. We have hosted golfing families and groups of friends who enjoy the many and varied courses available on the Cape. Orleans is a great location to use as your home base while hitting the links. There are a number of both public and private courses in the mid and lower Cape. Off season - many of the private courses offer golf packages to non members and reduced greens fees are available at public courses as well. Public courses include The Captains Courses in Brewster, Chatham Seaside Links, Highland Links in Truro, Cranberry Valley in Harwich, Dennis Pines and Dennis Highlands in Dennis, Bayberry Hills and Bass River in Yarmouth.
Captains Golf Course is less than 9 miles from the house. The Captains is Cape Cod’s premier public golf course facility, located in Brewster, Massachusetts — the golf capital of the Lower Cape! The staff includes PGA professionals available for lessons and clinics. There is also a fully stocked Pro Shop and a full restaurant. The course is conveniently located off the Mid-Cape Highway Route 6.Tel: (508) 896-1716.
The Chatham Seaside Links was built in 1895 and is located 11 miles from the house. It is a 9-hole course that is centrally located right in downtown Chatham. Though it is a smaller course, golfers of all levels are sure to find some challenges here and getting matched with a 3-some is never too long a wait. The holes consist of mostly par 3's and 4's.
