Cheery Cottage With Taste of Bahamian Village Life

  • 4 of 5

My husband, 2 1/2 year old daughter & I stayed in this lovely cottage for 6 nights the end of February-March. The photos on this website give a true representation of this cheery cottage. We found the cottage to be clean, well equipped and perfect for our little family. We ate breakfast each morning on the porch, did daytrips and then relaxed during the evening eating at the cottage several nights as well as at 2 of the local restaurants just down the road. The beach is literally just across the road and is beautiful and secluded. Our daughter enjoyed digging and playing in the sand during the day and my husband ran along the beach in the evenings. We enjoyed meeting and talking to local villagers (one woman who was selling seashell jewelry, a neighbor & the restaurant owners). Everyone was very inviting, as was our experience in general in the Grand Bahamas. We rented a car from Dollar Car Rental at the airport which was essential since the village of High Rock is about 45 minutes-1 hour drive from the airport in Freeport or Lucaya. We did end up driving quite a bit during our stay because a lot of the things we wanted to see (Taino Beach, Smith Point Fish Fry, Port Lucayana Marketplace, Garden of the Groves & Lucayan National Park with Gold Rock Beach) were closer to Lucaya, but we really enjoyed having a chance to experience a taste of Bahamian village life as well.

Lovely spot, but

  • 2 of 5

This is a great little cottage, but it needs a THOROUGH cleaning and attention to some basic maintenance (such as leak under sink, new sheets and pots and pans). Attempts to contact manager while we were there were unsuccessful. So, although we liked the quiet spot and the small town, we moved to other accommodations.

Me and my husband loved it! Back this summer!!!

  • 5 of 5

So this past march was our 6 year wedding anniversary. We decided to so something on our own (without our two toddlers haha). We chose Eden cottage because of the location. We have been to Nassau in the past and we were looking for a quieter, more romantic setting. When we arrived we were greeted by Sandra (the owner) at the airport. She was the sweetest woman and remained that way throughout our stay. She gave us a map to the cottage and told us where we can pick up groceries etc. she was very helpful. As for the cottage. It was BEAUTIFUL. It was so quaint and cute. It sits right across the street from the most breathtaking beach that you can imagine. My husband and I spent a lot of time at the beach and at the cute little restaurants just walking distance down the road (You have to try the conch fritters!). The cottage was clean, breezy and met all of our needs. We felt like we were in our own little world! The landscaping is also quite attractive and the neighborhood is such a nice little island town. There were often friendly little kids on the street looking for sea grapes or at the beach playing. One of the locals even taught me how to fish with a hand line one night (I didn't catch anything ha). Anyways if you are looking for a relaxing vacation in a secluded little paradise Eden cottage is the place for you!!! We had zero complaints :) My husband are planning our next trip back this summer!!!!! Thank you Sandra!

Friendly but could be better maintained

  • 2 of 5

We were met very warmly by Sandra at the ferry port, who helped us to contact the car rental company and gave us the keys and directions. The cottage is located nicely in a small village, which looks as if it has seen better days (maybe before the hurricanes in 2004?). Even though we liked the house and furniture, we did not feel comfortable as it was not very well maintained: 1) it could have been a lot cleaner (one does not expect moldy faucets in the bathroom, loads of half used shampoos and other old toiletries in chaos under the sink and dead cockroaches in the upper bedroom 2) We had to throw away tons of leftovers from previous inhabitants like jam, mayonnaise and oatmeal, which might related to problem 3) – the termites, which came out at nights and were everywhere. We were happy to be able to switch houses and stayed in Eden 2 (which is newer) from day three on, but even there we had to kill cockroaches and termites on a daily basis and showered hot and cold in turns.

However, if the houses would be cleaned and maintained better in the future, this is a really nice location and you can relax at the beach almost by yourself (joggers beware the dogs).

Owner's Response: Lisa and family stayed at the property during the month of March. It became apparent from their first day that they were having issues about ants and termites. I provided them with the necessary insecticides to assist with the problem. When further complaints were made I offered new accommodations so that I could have the exterminators review the situation and take the necessary action to eradicate the problem. I did explain to Lisa that the cottage is located in a wooded area and that contributed to the situation. As for the condiments, previous guests appreciated having them available so I did not see the need to dispose of them. I have not had any previous complaints that guests were offended by them. I do appreciate Lisa's comments on the state of cleanliness and will pay closer attention to the details mentioned. High Rock is a small local community and does not have the city grandeur, but the friendliness of the residence makes up for its short comings.

Excellent!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Eden Cottage 2 (the biggest, newest cottage) and we loved it! We went there with our son (3 almost 3 years old) and my mother in law. So, we were 3 adults and a child.

The whole High Rock area is wonderful and peaceful. The beach is just across the street, which is also very tranquil. The beach is nice, perfect for swimming, walking or just playing in the sand or water. Our 3-years old son loved it! We spent there 4 nights but wished we could stay there much longer. The cottage was very clean and it had everything we needed. There were also some sets for snorkeling and sand toys for children. We enjoyed the sunset making the barbecue in the afternoon. But if you want to have a dinner outside, there is a small restaurant on the beach 5 min. walk from the cottage.

Everybody there is very nice, also the staff is very nice and helpful, owners' assistant took us to the supermarket the very first day, so we could buy everything we needed too. Of course you need to rent a car if you want to stay there, but you need it anyway if you want to see the island.

The only one thing needs to be improved: the garden.

All in all, we all absolutely loved our stay in Eden Cottage, Grand Bahama!
