150+ FT ON CAYUGA LAKE--JUST 5 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN ITHACA; 3 MILES CORNELL

Ithaca House Rental Photos and Description

4 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6 (additional guests up to 10 extra chg)

Less than 5 minutes from downtown Ithaca on the west shore of Lake Cayuga, this property has spectacular lake vistas and over 150 feet of easily accessible lake frontage. 1.5 acres of woods and majestic hemlock trees frame a cottage originally built in the mid 1800's by a mayor of Ithaca and then lived in in the summers by his daughter, Belle, until her death in 1922--one of Ithaca's original lakefront homes. The property is our home but we travel frequently to visit family. When we are away, we like to share the beautiful view and rustic lodge-like home for small gatherings of friends and families. Due to the ecologically sensitive location, we don't usually rent to groups larger than 8-10.

The paved S-curved driveway leads through the trees down the hill to a large parking area with turnaround. There is one flight of stairs to the kitchen entrance but bedrooms can be accessed from the driveway level.

The 2200 sf of living space includes kitchen with stainless appliances, bathroom, and open living/dining room along with a side room that can be used as a fifth bedroom; stone fireplace in living room has charming arts-and-craftsy 'inglenook';

4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms as well as a screened porch are on the second floor. Two bedrooms have queensize beds; one has a fullsize bed; and one is set up as an office with a full sleeper sofa. Additional living space in the walk-out basement level features a 6-person sauna.

Lakefront includes beach areas, grassy areas, fire pit, dock, and boathouse.

Activities and Attractions : The Finger Lakes is renowned for its wineries and breathtaking gorges. Ithaca is a mecca of arts, science, film activities, artisan farming, world famous restaurants, etc. Ithaca's Farmers Market is renowned. However, alot of folks don't even want to leave the property, since the view, the swimming, the kayaking, and just gazing at the ever-changing water is the best--an oasis of peace and beauty --yet so close to all the percs of civilization! 'Magical' is the word most frequently used by visitors to describe the setting.

In addition, there is a small, 2-bedroom cabin on the upper part of the property completely private from the main house that is available at Homeaway.com listing # 268870.

Guestbook comments from the owner
What a treat to spend a week in your wonderful lake home. We felt we were staying with friends in their country house. The birds were amazing: osprey, terns, kingfisher, waxwings and of course, the mama duck with her seven very young duckings.

Thanks again for your hospitality. You have thought of everything to make one's stay a delight.

We are a retired couple who travel alot and like to share our home on Lake Cayuga in Ithaca while we are away with folks who want some quiet time by the lake in a magical setting.

The Owner purchased this house in 2003

Our son was in law school at Cornell when we were looking for lakefront property, and he suggested we look here. The majestic trees and wide expanse of water as well as the long history of the cozy, rustic cottage, really charmed us.

Private, scenic lake frontage but SO close to all the Ithaca offerings.

WONDERFUL STAY

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay here. Our group thought this was a very nice rustic lake house, spacious with lots of rooms. Very large dock was perfect for spending time on the water, along with a front grassy area along the lake. Also proximity to Ithaca is tough to beat. Thumbs up from our crew!

LOVELY SPOT

  • 4 of 5
This is a very nice place terrifically situated in a quiet area right next to Ithaca and I recommend it. A few things renters should be aware of. There is a second rental on the property, a cabin connected by a breezeway. I only saw the couple renting that place once during my family's week there and we felt we had complete privacy. The owners live in an attached unit (really the south half of the house) but were only there our first night, after they spent the day cleaning up from the floods that hit the area the day before. As the pictures make clear there are several stairs to the lake, no problem for my sure-footed 4-year-old but could be an issue for very young kids just starting to toddle or elderly folks with mobility issues. There was a thicket of weeds just by the end of the dock, so no diving. But it was just a patch that could be swum through--both the shallower part by the beach and the deeper part of the lake were clear and the swimming was great, as was the kayaking (there are kayaks and canoes available). The house amply accommodated 6 adults, one preschooler and two infants. The back office made a great spare bedroom. The building has a nice, lived-in feeling, very comfortable with lots of nooks and crannies to spread out in and plenty of books to browse. The well-stocked kitchen delighted the cook in our party. The property has spectacular lake views and is beautifully landscaped. There's a playground a couple of minutes down the road, and lots of grocery stores, restaurants, etc within 10 minutes. The owners are very easy to deal with and the house and surroundings were spotless, remarkable given the freak mudslides that hit the area just before we arrived.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the nice review and glad you enjoyed your stay! We need to clarify our listing: the main house is our home which we rent selectively to small family groups when we are traveling. The entire house-- 4-bedroom/3-baths-- is rented. The self-contained master bedroom (which is the house's fifth bedroom) is not part of the rental and, therefore, no pictures of it appear in the listing. If we need to stay a night on the property, we can come and go from our wing without disturbing any folks in the main part of the house.

Like all properties on the west shore of the lake in Ithaca, the property is not for anyone with mobility challenges; however, it is more accessible than most. The property is large and covered with a forest of beautiful trees; the "cabin" (Homeaway listing # 268870) renters have their own section of the property that is oriented uphill from the main house and has its own parking, paths and beach areas. Only kayaks and life vests are shared with the main house. The weeds are an issue towards the end of summer when they finish their upward growth. Usually we take a "cutter" and get rid of the weeds as far as the "cutter" can be heaved from the dock. That creates a nice swimming area and diving becomes unobstructed. Unfortunately, this year we were out of the country for our son's wedding at cutting time.

GREAT GIRLFRIENDS' GETAWAY

Great Girlfriends' Getaway
  • 5 of 5
My six high school girlfriends and I spent the weekend here, originally with plans to go back into town for dining each night. We quickly changed our minds and decided to take advantage of the lake, the relaxation, and the roomy coziness of the house. We had everything we needed to cook in - fully stocked kitchen with great appliances, spices, and utensils. We would return again and again!

No bats, and barely any sound from the neighbors though we knew they were there. Sunrise was stunning. It was too warm to use the sauna, but everything else was perfect. The owners have gone out of their way to think of everything that you might need.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

  • 5 of 5
This is an astonishing rental. I felt welcomed as an old friend. Everything I needed from garlic press, coffee maker, and salad bowls to binoculars, hammocks, and kayaks were available to me and my family in this spacious and historic setting. The charm of the house is complimented by the hypnotic ambiance of the lake. I cannot wait to return!

ps (Would have enjoyed excitement of nocturnal visitors, but alas, none showed!)

NICE HOUSE IF YOU LIKE BATS!

  • 2 of 5
My family rented this house for a week, really actually Saturday to Friday because that is how the owners rent the house weekly. We had Bats flying around the house the first night we arrived and felt a little uneasy staying there the rest of the week, especially with my 3 month old son. Overall, beautiful View, and clean, but in my opinion overpriced for the outdated facilities and nocturnal visitors.

Owner's Response: really sorry that a bat got into the house while Liz was there. In our 7 years restoring this original lakehouse, dating from 1850, never had a bat before or since. We apologized profusely. And from what Dale told us there was only one appearance, and they were able to plug up where the bat went so it did not reappear the rest of their stay.
Unfortunately the bat population around here is dying off. we used to see several flying over the lake at dusk in the summer but now there are none. Nevertheless i would be uncomfortable too, especially with a baby in the house.

As for "outdated": the house is vintage, rustic, antique--low ceilings, alot of original wood. kind of like deetjen's in Big Sur which is on the national historic register. However, the 3 bathrooms are new as of 2004. The kitchen also, with high-end stainless appliances. however, kitchen cabinets are generic oak, not yet updated. The price is based on comparable lakefront rentals with 3 baths and 4 bedrooms and within 5 miles of Cornell/Ithaca (there are only a few this large and they are in demand due to their size and convenience to the amenities of Ithaca). You can definitely get lower pricing further north on the lake--20-30 miles from ithaca.
