'RIVER ROSE' HISTORICAL 1920'S COTTAGE ON ROCKY BROAD RIVER

Chimney Rock Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

River Rose Cottage is a charming vacation rental cottage tucked away on a quiet, dead-end street that runs along the Rocky Broad River in Chimney Rock, North Carolina. Just a short walk over the bridge and you are in downtown Chimney Rock. Built in 1921, the cottage retains many charming elements from its past, such as 10 foot bead-board ceilings and a natural stone fireplace with gas logs for chilly mountain evenings.

WE HAVE A LOCAL MANAGER AND CARETAKER WHO CAN PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE YOU MIGHT NEED DURING YOUR STAY!

The cottage has three porches furnished for outdoor living and dining, complete with rocking chairs and ceiling fans. The back screened porch overlooks the river and the open front porch is directly below Chimney Rock, affording a beautiful view of 'The Rock' which is dramatically illuminated in the evenings. However, our guests say their favorite spot for reading and relaxing is the large screened side porch where the sounds of the rushing river often lull you to sleep.

The Rocky Broad River is excellent for fly fishing, wading and tubing and is just steps from your back door! It's a River Rose Cottage tradition to spend an evening with family and friends around a campfire roasting hot dogs and marshmallows down by the river. Located within walking distance to village shops and restaurants and less than a mile from Lake Lure, River Rose Cottage is perfect for a family vacation, or a romantic getaway for two.

PLEASE NOTE: We have a 5-night minimum in the busy summer months and a 3-night minimum on holidays the rest of the year. We turn over on Sat or Sun in the summer. However, sometimes scheduling allows us to accept less than a 5-night minimum in summer, so please don't hesitate to inquire. However, we always have a 2-night minimum. We are sorry, but we are unable to accept one-night rentals.

IF YOU HAVE A LARGER GROUP, WE ALSO HAVE CRIMSON COTTAGE FOR RENT ON THE SAME STREET (VRBO #110939). COMBINED, THE TWO COTTAGES CAN SLEEP A MAXIMUM OF 14 PEOPLE. GREAT FOR A FAMILY REUNION. TENANTS RENTING RIVER ROSE COTTAGE RECEIVE A 10% DISCOUNT OFF CRIMSON COTTAGE.

Our family enjoys staying at River Rose Cottage because it is located on a charming village lane and is just a short walk over the bridge to Chimney Rock Village. We enjoy visiting the shops, sampling the family oriented restaurants, gem mining, and walking along the River Walk. We play mini golf in the village and enjoy the beautiful mountain and river views.

Sharon Ryan purchased this cottage in 2003

We love outdoor activities and they are abundant here. You can walk down to the river in the back of the cottage to fish, wade or tube. Hiking and exploring Chimney Rock State Park is lots of fun and the entrance to the Park is very close by. The Lake Lure Marina is just a mile away where you can take a run (or walk) on the pedestrian trail, rent a canoe, play a game of tennis while the kids enjoy the playground equipment, or swim and enjoy water games at the Lake Lure Beach,

First thing in the morning, we walk to the Lake Lure Marina and run on the pedestrian trial that weaves along the shoreline of Lake Lure. Back at the cottage, we have breakfast on the screen porch overlooking the river. If we are in the mood for hiking, we pack a picnic lunch and hike in Chimney Rock State Park. Our sons really enjoy the rock climbing tower there. After a strenuous day hiking, my wife enjoys a soak in the Jacuzzi tub that we recently installed when we renovated one of the bathrooms. We have dinner in one of the lakefront restaurants in Lake Lure and sample the local trout. Howver, if we're feeling lazy, we just enjoy spending the day reading while sitting in one of the rockers on the screen porch and listening to the soothing sounds of the Rocky Broad River, right out the back door.

CHARMING AND RELAXING!

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at River Rose Cottage was enhanced by the beautiful location by the Rocky Broad River and by the charming cottage itself. We spent our morning coffee time out by the river watching the wildlife and listening to the sounds of the water tumbling over the rocks. The cottage is very well appointed and comfortable with plenty of room for 2 and (later in our week) our small family for a total of 6. The cottage itself is a historical structure with beautiful hardwoods and bead-boarding such as I remember from my grandmother's farmhouse. It was a wonderful step back in time that included all of the modern amenities that we are accustomed to having. You can easily walk into Chimney Rock Village to visit the shops and restaurants, and each proprietor that we had contact with was welcoming and friendly. Lake Lure Marina is a very short drive (less than 5 minutes), and we enjoyed our boat tour and the beach at Lake Lure. The cottage's porches provided ample and relaxing room for conversation (and naps!), and the furnishings on the porches provided extra seating for meals and reading. I would recommend Laura's Restaurant for a hearty lunch and any of the river side diners for a drink and music. Historic Downtown Hendersonville is an easy 20 minute drive for a day trip to visit museums, antique shops, and bookstores, along with several restaurants and bakery with outside seating for people-watching. I highly recommend River Rose Cottage through Distinctive Mountain Lodging. Sharon Ryan is a true gem! She helped us to plan the perfect anniversary and family getaway.

WONDERFUL TIME AT RIVER ROSE COTTAGE!

  • 5 of 5
Our family came together for a week at River Rose Cottage - some of us from Canada and some of us from Southeastern North Carolina - to celebrate our daughters' birthdays and have some time together. It was the perfect place. We hiked, kayaked, toured Asheville, enjoyed great meals on the porch and conversations while sitting on the rocks beside the river. We couldn't have asked for a better place than the lovely and quaint River Rose Cottage.

The cottage was well cared for, clean and the beds comfortable. We love to cook together and found the kitchen to be quite well equipped. Our stay was flawless and we had everything we needed to fully enjoy our family time.

Thank you to the owners and manager of River Rose Cottage for a perfect family week!

GREAT & COMFORTABLE STAW AWAY FROM HOME

Great & Comfortable Staw Away From Home
  • 5 of 5
My wife, I and 3 children (15 yrs, 12 yrs, 10 yrs) arrived the day after Christmas and stayed for 5 nights. From the very first minute until the last, we had a great time. Check-in was friendly and quick, the cottage had everything we needed, and a pre-arranged flexible check-out time ensured that we did not feel pressured to leave in a hurry.

Like other reviews, River Rose is very comfortably equipped, and extremely clean and well decorated for a 93 year old property. The weather was very cold while we were there (between mid 20s to low 40s) but the solid windows and doors, together with a great heating system, ensured that the cold "stayed outside"! The mattresses were extremely comfortable, as were the sofas. The remote controlled gas fire was a great warming addition for that cozy feeling. The patios are a great location to take in great views of the river, where our children played on the banks and on the rocks.

There are many sights to see in Chimney Rock and the surrounding areas, including Chimney Rock itself, Moonshine Mountain and Asheville. Moonshine Mountain is a MUST for snow tubing!

Restaurants in Chimney Rock far exceeded our expectations, particularly Medina's and La Strata. We only had lunch at Medina's, but the food was amazing and inexpensive. Dinner at La Strata was similarly great and inexpensive, with impressive views over part of Lake Lure.

We definitely recommend River Rose Cottage to anyone who appreciates a "home from home" vacation experience.

Owner's Response: Chris and Val - Thanks so much for your wonderful review of River Rose Cottage. Your review being so thorough helps future guests have an understanding of what to expect at the cottage and we greatly appreciate you taking the time to include little details. The owners and I have added a lot of upgrades and improvements this past year and we're so glad you enjoyed the new sofas, mattresses, etc. This is a delightful area to visit as the scenery is gorgeous and there's lots to do. Hope to see you again! Best wishes to your family, Sharon and Heather

THE PERFECT MOUNTAIN GETAWAY COTTAGE!

  • 5 of 5
What ever you find yourself taking you to the NC mountains for this quaint 1920's cottage is the perfect spot! If you want to relax, you can. If you want to be adventurous, you can. Outdoor sports are literally right out your back door as well shopping and dining all within walking distance. If you are relaxing - stay in and read a book on one of the two covered porches overlooking the river which creates such a soothing backdrop as it rushes by while you read and sip your coffee in the morning or wine of an afternoon. The cottage interior is rustic and homey. Everything you would expect from an old mountain cottage! The rooms were decorated cute and the beds were comfy. We had no trouble drifting off to sleep at night after a long day of adventure in and around Chimney Rock. We cooked meals in the kitchen with no trouble! Actually, a few years back we had the pleasure of staying at River Rose over Thanksgiving and we had no problem cooking an entire Thanksgiving turkey and ham meal in the kitchen with all the trimmings and pies to boot! One review I read on here the person mentioned having trouble seeing in the kitchen and needing to bring in a light. I am sorry to say, I don't know what her issues are, but my crowd had no problems at all. This location is super convenient and what an awesome view of Chimney Rock and the river! The street River Rose is located on is like an old time-y lane of cute river homes. I honestly have nothing but great things to say about this home and location. Just perfect! Sharon, the manager, made sure our stay was to our liking. She is on the ball! Thank you, Sharon and your team at Distinctive Mountain Lodging! We look forward to another return visit soon! Keep up the great work!

GREAT COTTAGE LOCATION WONDERFUL MANAGERS. A BIT DISAPPOINTED !

  • 2 of 5
I loved the area and the manager Sharon is fantastic. I was very disappointed when we arrived to discover the neighbors are so close. From pictures it appears more private. The lighting needs to be improved, it was so dark lights were low wattage, the kitchen was so dark we had to take a lamp from the living room to cook by. You had to lean into the lamp on the couch in order to read. The same with bedside lamps. The furniture needs to be upgraded, the couch after a day was very uncomfortable and actually hurt my lower back and tail bone. After checking we discovered there was plywood under the cushions, we removed it and it helped but, the furniture is not very accommodating for relaxing at all. The bed in the middle bedroom was topped with a thick piece of foam but, this did not distract from the age of the bed, which also has plywood between the mattress and box springs which made it uncomfortable, we tried the other bed and it was no better. With the money it cost to stay here, it would be a good idea to improve the lighting and the comfort of the furniture, I was so hoping to relax. The side porch could not be used it was too dark to read there and besides the next door neighbor stood a few feet away most of the time on the phone. I truly thought the cottage had more privacy, like the pictures make it appear to have. The cottage is very quaint and cute, decorated nicely, just not comfortably. We had a lot of issues with internet service which is a big factor for me renting, I use it for work. Sharon was excellent in taking care of the problem for me. She got someone there to fix the problem. The area is great and you can walk to Main St. If the cottage had comfortable furniture and beds, it would be a great place. The cottage was not as clean as I expected it to be, there was a lot of dust all over, some things had not been dusted in a long time, there was popcorn behind the couch the phone man found it and other food. In the large bath, there is black all around the edge where the floor meets the wall I think it is old glue from the flooring. The furniture needs to be pulled out and cleaned behind, the carpets need cleaning in the bedrooms. Nothing seriously bad, just a good thorough cleaning between customers would be great. I am a little picker then most I realize since I owned a cleaning service for years. I usually do not give a review but felt maybe if I did the owners would upgrade the furniture for the next occupants.

Owner's Response: Glenda, Thanks so much for writing such a thoughtful review of our home. We value your comments and would like to address your issues. Regarding the location of the cottage, as it states on our listing, it is located in the village of Chimney Rock, walking distance to the shops and restaurants. I’m sorry if that somehow implied that it was private, as it is located on a charming street of little cottages that runs along the river.
I’m sorry you felt it was too dark in the cottage as we’ve never had that complaint before. There are large windows in the living area and kitchen, plus lamps and ceiling light fixtures. However, we use CFL bulbs which are not as bright as traditional bulbs. But I’ll be shopping for more lamps!
I’m glad we were able to resolve the internet problem quickly so you had internet for the majority of your 2-week stay.
Thanks for letting us know about the sofas. While they still looked good, the cushions were sagging a bit, so we’ve bought new sofas which will be delivered Monday, before our Thanksgiving guests arrive. I’m sure they will appreciate them!
I’m also sorry, and perplexed, that you found the beds uncomfortable. One of the queens is barely 2 years old and is a Serta Perfect Sleeper. The owner has back issues so we put a board under the other queen mattress for him. We added a 3” memory foam topper for comfort. Other vrbo reviewers have posted “The bed we slept in was the most comfortable one we have ever slept on.“ So we’ve found that mattress preferences are personal and vary widely.
I’m also very sorry you felt the cottage was dusty. The cottage was thoroughly cleaned and inspected prior to your arrival so I’m going to have to disagree with you on this point. However, if you had told me you had minor issues, I would’ve been happy to send another housekeeper over immediately.
We happily took care of the internet issues quickly, and we would have taken care of any other issues whenever possible had we known. We communicated by telephone and email several times during your stay and the only issue you mentioned was the internet. Sometimes tenants have requirements specific to their personal needs, and we are always happy to accommodate them whenever possible.
We love River Rose Cottage and have taken your comments to heart. We’re delighted that we were able to buy new furniture and we hope future guests will be very happy with our choices. Best wishes, Sharon
