Photos and Description of the Domme vacation cottage rental
2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 2-4

Located inside the walls of the medieval village of Domme (voted “one of the most beautiful villages of France’’), this restored stone cottage offers charming and comfortable accommodation for a couple or small family. It has a master bedroom, a small bedroom, a bathroom, a large open-plan kitchen and dining room, and an elegant and cozy living room. It also has a secluded garden with table and chairs to lunch under the fruit trees while enjoying the extensive view over the fortified village walls. The house is set in a quiet street but is only 3 minutes walk from the shops, bars and restaurants of the bastide village. You can lie in bed enjoying the countryside views and send your partner to get the baguettes and croissants in the mornings! Or wander back home in the evening, after a delicious meal and a romantic stroll through the honey-coloured village. La Combe was featured in the Travel section of the UK Sunday Times as one of the 12 most romantic places to stay in Europe.

Indoor description: From the doorstep made with traditional “pisé” (small pieces of stone set into lime) the front door opens into an open plan kitchen and dining area. The solid wood kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven, hob, microwave, toaster, kettle and fridge-freezer. There is also large cast iron woodstove for those chillier evenings in low and middle season. Adjacent is a cozy and light living room with a sofa, two armchairs, a coffee table and a large collection of French and English books. It has French doors which open onto the enclosed yard and the stone staircase that leads to the secluded garden.

From the dining area, an oak spiral staircase leads upstairs to the bedrooms and the bathroom. The comfortably elegant master bedroom at the rear of the house, with its view over the valley from the dormer window, has a double bed and plenty of under-eave storage. The bright and airy bathroom features a view of the fortified walls and has a full bath, shower, sink and toilet. The small bedroom to the front of the house, with its exposed wooden beams, has a double bed in it and comfortably sleeps one or two.

The house has been restored using traditional and ecological materials including lime plaster, hemp insulation, natural paints and wood treatments and organic fabrics. It also runs on renewable electricity. It has been redecorated with a keen eye to detail whilst retaining many of the original features including exposed stone walls and wooden beams. There are also solid wooden floors throughout. The house comes equipped with a washing machine, an ironing board and iron.

Outdoor description: Outside, there is an enclosed sunny yard ideal for parking your bicycle. Up the stone staircase a small secluded garden features two fig trees, an apricot tree and an herb garden. A garden dining table and four chairs as well as deck chairs are provided. The garden offers shady and sunny areas to sit, relax and enjoy the view. The garden is on several levels and accessed by an old, steep stone staircase, which may make it unsuitable for the elderly and small children.

Parking: Due to the narrow street, parking in front of the house is only for loading/unloading purposes. There are several free parking spaces within 100 metres of the house.

Built in the 13th century, the fortified village of Domme stands above a bend in the river Dordogne. It has one of the most stunning panoramic views in all of France, which prompted Henry Miller to write: 'Just to glimpse the black, mysterious river at Domme from the beautiful bluff...is something to be grateful for all one's life.'

The village is steeped in history and the old ochre limestone buildings have been perfectly preserved. It has restaurants and cafes of all grades, a weekly market, a public playground and caves accessible from the market square.

Within easy reach are the medieval town of Sarlat (much used in film sets), the amazing painted cave systems of Perigord, the spectacular chateaux of Castelnaud, Beynac and Montfort and the troglodyte villages of LaRoque Gageac and St Christophe.

My wife and I found this lovely home to be all that we expected and more. It is absolutely charming and in perfect condition. Domme is a very charming village. We greatly enjoyed walking around the village and the views from the top of the town are just amazing. Without hesitation we would recommend this house and village to anyone interested in visiting this lovely part of the world.

This charming cottage was home for 3 glorious weeks in summer. The cottage is just as depicted, tastefully renovated, clean, calm and peaceful. Many visitors come into Domme during the day at this peak tourist time, particularly on market day, but the cottage is in a quiet street away from it all, yet only a minutes walk from good restaurants. We used it as a base to explore all the beautiful walks, small towns, chateaux and caves that this wonderful area has to offer. When it got too hot, we just went down to swim or canoe along the beautiful Dordogne River. All contact with the owner and his representative were prompt, helpful and friendly.

So comfortable and relaxing

Submitted: June 7, 2012 Stayed: October 2011
Just finished our stay in Domme. Very relaxing, the cottage is so comfortable! So comfortable that shamefully most days we didn’t stir until noon! We loved the fireplace and thanks so much for the generous stockpile of firewood. What a beautiful and picturesque part of france this is – we will definitely be back. Off to Bordeaux! Thanks again for the lovely stay!

A wonderful place for an autumn holiday

Submitted: June 7, 2012 Stayed: October 2011
We can’t think of a better area to enjoy an autumn holiday – absolutely amazing colours which we have enjoyed on our many walks. We’ve been blessed with beautiful weather; 6 days on the trot with cloudless skies and sunshine, with temperatures averaging 22C...There is so much to do in this area – we’re bound to return again...Last week we were able to enjoy our sun-downers on the garden bench, this week we were grateful for the supply of logs! As evenings out were limited at this time of year, the DVD’s were much appreciated too and we’ve taken down 8 book titles from the ‘library’ to enjoy at a later date. Au revoir ‘La Combe’
