Domme Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 2-4

Located inside the walls of the medieval village of Domme (voted “one of the most beautiful villages of France’’), this restored stone cottage offers charming and comfortable accommodation for a couple or small family. It has a master bedroom, a small bedroom, a bathroom, a large open-plan kitchen and dining room, and an elegant and cozy living room. It also has a secluded garden with table and chairs to lunch under the fruit trees while enjoying the extensive view over the fortified village walls. The house is set in a quiet street but is only 3 minutes walk from the shops, bars and restaurants of the bastide village. You can lie in bed enjoying the countryside views and send your partner to get the baguettes and croissants in the mornings! Or wander back home in the evening, after a delicious meal and a romantic stroll through the honey-coloured village. La Combe was featured in the Travel section of the UK Sunday Times as one of the 12 most romantic places to stay in Europe.

Indoor description: The front door opens into an open plan kitchen and dining area. The solid wood kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven, hob, microwave, toaster, kettle, coffee maker and fridge-freezer. There is also a large cast iron woodstove for those chillier evenings in low and middle season. Adjacent is a cozy and light living room with a sofa, two armchairs, a coffee table and a large collection of French and English books. It has French doors which open onto the enclosed yard and the stone staircase that leads to the secluded garden.

From the dining area, an oak spiral staircase leads upstairs to the bedrooms and the bathroom. The comfortably elegant master bedroom at the rear of the house, with its view over the valley from the dormer window, has a double bed and plenty of under-eave storage. The bright and airy bathroom features a view of the fortified walls and has a full bath, shower, sink and toilet. The small bedroom to the front of the house, with its exposed wooden beams, has a double bed in it and comfortably sleeps one or two.

The house has been restored using traditional and ecological materials including lime plaster, hemp insulation, natural paints and wood treatments and organic fabrics. It also runs on renewable electricity. It has been redecorated with a keen eye to detail whilst retaining many of the original features including exposed stone walls and wooden beams. There are also solid wooden floors throughout. The house comes equipped with a washing machine, an ironing board and iron.

Outdoor description: Outside, there is an enclosed sunny yard ideal for parking your bicycle. Up the stone staircase a small secluded garden features two fig trees, an apricot tree and an herb garden. A garden dining table and four chairs as well as deck chairs are provided. The garden offers shady and sunny areas to sit, relax and enjoy the view. The garden is on several levels and accessed by an old, steep stone staircase, which may make it unsuitable for the elderly and small children.

Parking: Due to the narrow street, parking in front of the house is only for loading/unloading purposes. There are several free parking spaces within 100 metres of the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just finished our stay in Domme. Very relaxing, the cottage is so comfortable! So comfortable that shamefully most days we didn’t stir until noon! We loved the fireplace and thanks so much for the generous stockpile of firewood. What a beautiful and picturesque part of france this is – we will definitely be back. Off to Bordeaux! Thanks again for the lovely stay!

This is a charming restored cottage located in a quiet street on the edge of he bastide village of Domme. The cottage was more than big enough for two adults and in having two bedrooms it meant we could have the luxury of a separate dressing room. The views from the elevated garden (be aware the stone steps to access are steep and a little narrow) and especially from the bath are excellent. The garden also has a good mix of sun and shade to cater for all tastes. There is a table and four chairs but we did take along a couple of recliners which were a useful adition.
Main bedroom is large and airy, it does get hot being in the roofspace but there are two large fans if needed. Overall the cottage is well equipped and an ideal holiday home.
We are regular visitors to Domme and we think this is a special place to while away a week or two, there is much to do locally in the Dordogne from gardens and chateaus to canoeing and exploring sleepy market towns but whether you stay in or go out it's always nice to end the day with a walk up to the viewpoint to gaze down at the fields and river below as the sun goes down. There are also some excellent eating places in the village to suit all pockets.

Just perfect!

We had such a wonderful week staying in this lovely little cottage. Domme is beautiful, as is the surrounding countryside, and the cottage itself is great - adorable to look at and very comfortable to live in. We loved all the utensils etc in the kitchen, as well as the DVDs in the living room. Everything has been thought of, and it really does feel like home for a week. There were four of us (all adults) for a few days and it was big enough to accommodate all of us. The only downside is that there is no wifi, and internet is difficult to come by in the village, however being "unconnected" does ensure a relaxing stay (and there is good 3G coverage at the cottage for emergencies).

Excellent week in Domme, August 2013 in a perfect little cottage

  • 5 of 5
The cottage was excellent for my wife and I and our two teenage children. The ceilings are a little low in places BUT the shower worked well with lots of water, the kitchen was very functional, the back garden was delightful to enjoy wine and watch the sunset. We washer was very helpful since we were on week two in France.

The owners were very responsive in answering questions about the rental, the town, and the area. The next door neighbor who handled the deposit and so-on were also very nice.

When we came into town the first time in the dark the GPS led us to the 'other' gap in the wall for cars. It took us a few passes in very arrow streets to find the cottage. Follow the owner's directions faithfully!

We wanted a village small enough to enjoy but large enough to have a few nice restaurants in walking distance. We enjoyed the market days, a number of the restaurants in town, and just strolling in Domme. We rented canoes one day on the river and had a wonderful time. We also visited one of the Neolithic caves in the area (book as soon as you know you are going) which was terrific. My son enjoyed the nearby castle, a relic if the 100 years war. My wife is interested in truffles so we toured a nearby truffle plantation including watching the farmer's dog at work finding truffles.

The very cute spiral staircase upstairs to the one bathroom and bedrooms makes this questionable for people with disabilities and for very young children.

A beautiful cottage in a gem of a Dordogne village

  • 5 of 5
The cottage itself is beautifully restored and very comfortable and well-equipped.(It was great to have a washing machine.) The garden is lovely, with a table and chairs on the top level under fig trees perfect for when we ate at home.
The owner has an arrangement with the couple across the street to provide any necessary assistance and we found them very helpful and friendly.
Domme is ideal as a centre from which to explore the area. Many must-see sights (chateaux, gardens such as Marqueyssac, prehistoric caves, canoe rentals, markets, Sarlat, Rocamadour) are well within an hour or so's drive, and there are also many of the Departement's marked hiking trails within easy reach. We spent two weeks here and did not run out of places to see.
North American drivers may, however, find the local roads much narrower than they are used to and should try and rent as small a car as they can.. We rarely found roads with more than one lane each way, and many were even narrower.
The village of Domme is charming and while full of tourists during the day, is very tranquil in the evenings. Several good restaurants to eat at, and one - Cabanoix et Chataigne - is outstanding. The views across the valley from the village walls are beautiful.
The owner was very helpful before we arrived and provided very detailed instructions on how to reach Domme and the house itself.
We thoroughly recommend this house.

A very quirky cottage in a lovely village

  • 4 of 5
The gite was a little difficult to find as we arrived late at 11.00 pm but the key-holder was waiting for us & helped us to get in which was very helpful. The cottage is very quaint & quirky and has been lovingly restored. It had all the facilities you could want and the bed was very comfy. The ceiling and doors are quite low & I should think tall people would have to be careful but we were OK being short! We loved sitting in the garden with tea & cakes (how British!) but it is a bit of a challenge to get up the steep uneven steps. But the view was worth it. We also sat on the seat at the bottom of the hill outside the walls in the evenings with a book which was lovely. The weather was glorious while we were there so that always improves things. We visited the local markets, castles etc and ate mostly in the restaurants in Domme, which were very good. Wonderful view from the Bastide, a pretty village even though it is a tourist mecca. All in all a most enjoyable stay.

Great cottage for a vacation

  • 4 of 5
We really enjoyed or stay in the cottage. The weather was abnormally cold and wet but we enjoyed the wood burning fire place even more. The payment process was easy using PayPal. The parking in the area can be tough but Andy's suggestion are really helpful. (Park on the road next to the ramparts). We enjoyed it so much we plan to come back next year.

Built in the 13th century, the fortified village of Domme stands above a bend in the river Dordogne. It has one of the most stunning panoramic views in all of France, which prompted Henry Miller to write: 'Just to glimpse the black, mysterious river at Domme from the beautiful bluff...is something to be grateful for all one's life.'

The village is steeped in history and the old ochre limestone buildings have been perfectly preserved. It has restaurants and cafes of all grades, a weekly market, a public playground and caves accessible from the market square.

Within easy reach are the medieval town of Sarlat (much used in film sets), the amazing painted cave systems of Perigord, the spectacular chateaux of Castelnaud, Beynac and Montfort and the troglodyte villages of LaRoque Gageac and St Christophe.
