A very special place

We stayed five nights earlier this summer at Torre de Oto - a unique and beautifully restored building that is a bit off the beaten path but well worth the effort to get to. First thing, it is not for anyone with mobility problems because the four flights of stairs are part of the experience. (We jokingly called the living room "base camp".) None of that really matters if you are healthy, though, and I doubt anyone would trek to this part of the Pyrennees if they weren't. (Besides, you'll likely be hiking during the day in Ordesa National Park nearby, the best mountain walking anywhere this side of the Alps.) The Torre is a little dark inside - as you would expect with small windows and three-foot wide stone walls, which of course limits the wi-fi inside - so you end up sitting outside in the yard a good bit. It's a little impractical as a guest house, but the fact is you will never stay in a more interesting and thoughtfully restored place. The Torre de Oto is a great accomplishment of amazing work - Jose Maria and Elena and their team spent two years (06-08) restoring the torre (see the book with many before-during-and-after photos on the coffee table), and it really is a monument to individual effort and hard work. What's more, they care for and keep up the Torre now with no less energy than the initial restoration; everything was clean as a whistle, and well maintained.
I was a paying guest, and I felt honored to stay there. It is a grand achievement, a unique and worthwhile destination for even the mildly adventurous. You will love it and the surrounding area as well.

Pyrenees Gem

Just returned from an amazing weekend at the Tower. We were looking for a place to stay while we spent the weekend skiing at Formigal. This place was perfect. 45 minutes drive from Formigal ski area, but it is worth it. My husband and sister and I went skiing for the day on Saturday, while my parents took a long hike to an abandoned village on the mountain next to the tower. Elena even let my mom borrow her hiking boots! Oto is a precious village set in a gorgeous valley with snow-peaked mountains all around, just across the Ara river from the slightly larger town of Broto. The Tower itself is fabulously restored and decorated and very comfortable. My family has traveled to a lot of interesting places, but this has got to be one of the most unique, off-the-beaten-track places we've ever stayed.

The hightlight of Spain for our family!

  • 5 of 5
Staying at La Torre de Oto was absolutely the highpoint of our trip in Spain, and frankly, has become one of our fondest family travel memories overall-and we've been a lot of places! We would recommend that if you like the outdoors, beauty, and tucked-away treasures, then no matter what else your Spain touring goals may be, getting here should not be missed! This 4-story historic stone tower has been lovingly and skillfully renovated into a gorgeous, cozy, and truly unique dwelling. It sits on a high perch in the charming tiny stone town, Oto, in the Pyrenees and is an ideal access point for countless hiking and outdoor activity spots. We arrived at night, in the pitch black, and were greeted by a friendly guide (friend of the owner) who quickly led us through the narrow streets to the amazing Torre. We were immediately charmed by this beautifully lit, fully appointed, and tastefully Rustic-chic space. Our children (ages 11 and 15) were enchanted. The bedrooms and bathrooms are immaculate, with high-quality bedding and excellent hot water. Discover the carved stone sink in the lower level half-bath! The kitchen is efficient and is not intended for complicated cooking as it has two-burners, no oven, and a below-counter frig. It is a gorgeous space however, with lovely dishware, all the necessities, a huge window with a view, and we had perfectly satisfying meals with our children during our 5-day stay. Oto is a remote location and it is advisable to shop in Jaca on the way in; you won't want to count on driving back down there for supplies. We also recommend the small grocery store in Torla, 12 minutes away. The Pizza de Tea restaurant is terrific in Broto-walking distance and has lots more than pizza. The owners of La Torre, Elena and Jose Marie, are the most friendly, generous and welcoming hosts with excellent knowledge of the area. We had the privilege of seeing the restoration work they've also undertaken at their adjoining family home across from La Torre. Truly amazing people with a property not to be missed. If you are considering spending time in the beauty of the Pyrenees, this rental will create a touch of magic for your trip-guaranteed.

Magic in the Pyrenees

  • 5 of 5
This is pretty simple ... there is no place I have ever stayed that I would recommend more. The beauty and serenity of the Tower are matched only by the kindness and sincerity of Elena and her family. In addition, the beauty and majesty of this part of the Pyrenees are second to none. Jaw dropping vistas await you at every corner. As long as the Tower is available to rent, I plan on returning on a regular basis.

Tranquility and Magic

  • 5 of 5
As an American, please allow me to aim this squarely at my fellow countrymen. If you have stumbled across this little gem in your search for a destination, just stop looking and book "The Tower" if your dates are still available. If you are considering somewhere else, stop, rent a car and do whatever it take to get here (you WILL need a car). One caveat...If you need nightlife, hustle and bustle, museums and throngs of people, ignore my suggestion and move on. If what you are seeking is a pastoral retreat, spectacular views, charming villages, friendly locals, and a true taste of Spain/Europe with no urban aftertaste, then this is for you. If you want to relax and take it slow, this is for you. If you want to bike, hike, stroll...this is for you. Above all, if you want to slow down and reconnect or just spend solid quality time with your family, partner, spouse, or fellow travelers...book the tower. Now. The restoration was done with loving care, and the facility is remarkable...historic and rustic, yet comfortable and accomodating. Elena and Jose Mari are incredibly gracious and helpful hosts. The surrounding area, both villages and countryside, are picturesque and are full of hidden gems. There were very few tourists here during our stay, and we felt that we were really able to connect with the locals (we have some bad Spanish, which helps a bit, but lots of folks speak English as well, and are very patient). This could not have been more perfect. Jaca is nearby and well worth the drive. France is close if you want to do a day trip. All the modern conveniences are just down the hill in Broto, but when you head back up the hill to your tower in Oto, you travel back in time to a period that we Americans have only read about. Book it. Live it. Do it. You WILL NOT regret it. My only other caveat...this is a tower after all, and there are steep stairs. I cannot emphasize enough that this is not an appropriate property for anyone who is remotely mobility-challenged, and that if you have small children, you should not bring them here unless you will be diligent about watching them very closely while you are there...our daughter fell down a flight of stairs and she's 15! No harm done, but it made us think. Could I possibly gush a little more? We were in three countries on this last trip and stayed in four separate destinations. La Torre de Oto is the only place we visited upon which we all agree that we will one day return

Unique Perfection!!!

  • 5 of 5
I first found this amazing tower on VRBO a year before my husband & I ended up coming here & we thankfully planned our month long trip to Spain around it. Elena & Jose have meticulously restored their gorgeous, ancestral 15th century tower into a warm, cozy, stunning holiday home for all of us to enjoy. They kindly welcomed us & showed us around. They are very friendly and gracious. Elena even went out of her way to accommodate us with extending our original stay by 2 nights as our subsequent reservations in Barcelona were cancelled on us. That was serendipitous! We felt at home immediately. After settling in, we relished in the quiet, dulcet tones of singing birds & the gentle, charming clanging of cowbells in the distance. I haven't been this relaxed in a very long time. After a month in Spain, this was the absolute favorite part of our travels. The tower is extremely comfortable. Windows facing in the four cardinal directions for dramatic views of the surrounding valley and mountains. The original defensive arrow slits on each of the four floors allow for incredibly unique vistas. Driving here was simple. There is an easy and close parking spot for you. We had a GPS which helped but any regular map can get you here. Madrid & Barcelona are an easy drive away. About the tower: The master bedroom is more than comfortable. I haven't slept this well is months. The windows are well-insulated for sound and weather. The second, twin bedroom is on the top floor and is gorgeous. Each of the two bedrooms has its own toilet/shower with great water pressure! There is a toilet on the ground floor, too. There is a washer/dryer and a dishwasher. There is a flat screen television, a stereo, and a Spanish DVD library. Internet is functional. The tower is 4 stories tall so be prepared to get your legs moving. There is no elevator. This just means you've earned that next glass(es) of wine and wedge(s) of cheese! The kitchen is extremely well-appointed and, as a professional chef, I found it to be more than sufficient. There are a few markets in Broto, 1 km away (beautiful walk or quick drive). It's the essence of Spain: gorgeous, full of life, passion, and love. Do yourself a favor, really. The hiking and outdoor sports opportunities are endless! Oto/Broto has something for everyone: outdoor fun or just relaxing in the tower with a glass of wine & a book. We hope you enjoy this peaceful, heart warming home as much as we did.
