Jericho House is a secluded property on the small island of Great Exuma. Houses on the island have names rather than addresses. Ours is no exception. Jericho House is named after a pond that has since then been filled but the name remains. The house is a simple single-story beach house designed for kicking back at the beach. If solitude and beautiful views are your idea of paradise, you will love Exuma. Exuma's appeal is that it is not filled with tourist traps and fancy hotels and restaurants, but rather that it a place of serenity where walks on sparsely populated beaches and boating or diving in pristine turquoise blue waters bring peace to even the most stressed-out travelers.
Jericho House is located less than five miles from the airport. It is difficult to see from highway, and the neighbors are barely visible as well. The property has a large number of mature coconut palms giving the home a very tropical feel. When you walk through the door, you will remember why you spent a difficult day traveling. The ocean is visible through the picture window and is the first sight you see when you open the front door.
Welcome to paradise! From the moment you turn into the driveway lined with palm trees, fruit trees, and brilliantly flowering bushes leading up to the house, you know you are in a special place. As you open the front door, the first thing you see is the ocean straight ahead through the living room wall of windows. Of all the islands and places we have been, we’ve never seen the color of ocean water so beautiful. Every time we see it, it is like the first time - a breathtaking spectacular experience.
Jericho House is located right on an isolated sandy beach overlooking ships sailing by in the distance. Once in a while you may see someone else walking on the beach, but most of the time it is just you and the sea.
Inside the house, it is well furnished. The beds are comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking. There is a big TV and wifi. There is a great outdoor grill. There are beach accessories. Even though you feel private and secluded, you are near enough to everything with a short ride to town. The Bahamian people in Exuma are very courteous and friendly. The island is not only beautiful, but welcoming.
Every time of day or night is special in its own unique way. The late afternoon sun shines on a reef out in the water turning it sparkling gold. In the ink black night sky the stars twinkle like diamonds. And most of all, the continuous sounding of the waves makes you feel like you have found heaven on earth.
Our first time to Exuma was 27 years ago and once we discovered Jericho House we are grateful that we never had to go any where else. It is by far the best accommodation we have stayed. It is so close to nature-it’s like going home.
We had the privilege of staying at Jericho House for the second time. We are already scheming about how we can get back there ASAP!
About the house:
The house itself has everything. It's very clean, amply supplied with water, towels, etc. The kitchen has a blender, microwave, dishes, pots, pans, spices, - everything needed to cook your own food. The beds are comfy. There's in room air conditioning (we didn't use them much - preferring to open the window and fall asleep to the sound of gentle waves) There's cable TV and Wife for a media fix. And the two screen doors are fantastic - we had them open all day long to let the breeze blow through the place.
The real charm of Jericho house, at least for us, is the incredible thing that happens when you walk through the front door. You are immediately confronted with a HUGE window that looks out on the deck and ocean. Its an irresistible invitation to head outside. Once out there, well, Jericho House really begins to show its beauty. The deck - HUGE. The view - incredible! The chairs - plentiful. The ocean - spectacular.
Just a few steps from the deck and you are walking on the beach. When we were there we had a nice combination of days with a bit of wave action - and days where the water was completely flat. On the flat days, we snorkelled out by the rocks. Every day we ended up strolling up and down the beach. It is magical! I think that over the course of the week we were there we saw a total of 11 people walking on the beach - it was wonderfully secluded!
I should add that the grounds around Jericho House are beautifully kept with coconut trees and other vegetation. We even found a few papayas - but they weren't ripe yet.
I can't write the review without also mentioning the charm of the island itself. This island, it's people, its laid back sense of things - all fantastic. While this is a review of Jericho House we have loved: Cocoplum beach at low tide, Tropic of Cancer beach, Santannas, the Fish Fry (on Fridays for sure), Chat 'n Chill, swimming with pigs/ sharks/ sting rays, sand bars in the middle of the ocean, feeding the Iguanas, boat tours of the Cays, a Kalik or two, Staniel Cay, wave surfing on the Atlantic side of Stocking Island, Starfish bay, exploring, the kindness of the Bahamian people, the incredible beaches everywhere, the warm ocean, fish, lobster, - everything!
The problem with this review is you might want to go to JH - and take a week we want!
My husband, two daughters and I stayed at Jericho for a week and had a wonderful getaway in a perfect vacation home. Jericho has a spectacular view and sits on one of the prettiest beaches in the world. The sand is like powder and the water is pristine. The home is well outfitted with all necessary supplies. We enjoyed the snorkeling right off the beach daily. Location is convenient to the airport and Georgetown and to many good restaurants. We enjoyed the boat tour with Exuma Water Sports and Justin. Swimming with the pigs and playing with the iguanas was fun! We also rented a boat from Mims for three days and enjoyed time on Stocking Island, especially Chat n Chill and feeding the sting rays. Santana's on Little Exuma was a neat spot as well and delicious food. I would highly recommend visiting Exuma and staying at Jericho.
My husband and I rented Jericho house for a week to get away from it all and have a week of relaxation and we were able to achieve that two fold! If you're looking for a beautiful setting right on the ocean, privacy and love listening to the sound of the ocean then jericho house is the place for you. We enjoyed hanging our on the beach, playing in the waves and walking the miles of abandoned beach. It always felt like you had it all to yourself! We were already talking about coming back when we were there and the owners made it so easy to book and were great help when we had any questions/ concerns:) thanks again and we can t wait to come back to this little peice of paradise!!!
We had a wonderful 10 day stay at Jericho House. The house is right on the beach. There was always a breeze to keep the bugs away. The house is well decorated, and with all amenities, including WiFi. The beach is at least a mile long and you hardly ever see anyone on it. If you feel like cooking in, get some fresh fish from Trish's beauty salon(yes) in George Town, or a steak or rotissiere chicken from the Butcher Shop. We chose this house over all the other home rentals on Exuma, and we absolutely recommend Jericho to anyone.
My husband and I spent a week at the Jericho House. We had a wonderful time. This is a perfect place for rest and relaxation. The view was beautiful as soon as you came through the door! White sand at your back door and great local food close by. We experienced the entire island visiting many local places and meeting many people. The owners provided us with all we needed. Fresh fish was available for quiet dinners at home listening to the surf day and night. We really enjoyed our time and will definately be back! Exuma was a great experience and the Jericho house was private cottage that allowed us to enjoy a much needed vacation!
