Overview

Zihuatanejo Condo Rental Photos and Description

Condo, 3 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 2-6)

One of the many things that sets our Casa del Rayo Verde apart, besides the panoramic vistas and truly beautiful artisan-crafted interiors, is its easy access to both the beach and to town, though some stairs are involved to reach the pool and then the beach. Upon arrival, one enters the front door which is right next to a private parking spot at the level of the road with no steep driveway or stairs to negotiate. The large private terrace with a huge stone table is the perfect place to enjoy meals and lounge throughout the day and night. The walk to the beach is roughly ten minutes, depending on your pace, down some stairs to the pool, along a dirt road, another set stairs....and you are there, no traffic or busy road to cross. All along the beach, there are many small restaurants to choose from. A cab can be at the front door within five minutes after calling and the drive into town is not much more than five minutes. There are several dining choices along the road to town including an acclaimed pizza parlor, several cliff-side restaurants overlooking the bay and many more in all price categories once you are in town. A list of our dining recommendations is provided and spans the simple to the sublime. NOTE: While most of our renters have found our beach very accessible by foot, we don't recommend our place to anyone who is not sure-footed and/or able to manage some stairs. Like most homes with spectacular views in this hilly area, stairs and sometimes steep driveways are a given; precise details with photos of our stairs is happily provided upon request.

On the grounds, a large shared pool invites swimming laps or enjoying the sun, and there is a 24-hour presence of either maintenance or security staff. The home is stocked with all the amenities you might need to include wi-fi, satellite television (40' Samsung flatscreen), BluRay DVD player, stereo and highly efficient air conditioners in every room. The kitchen is well supplied for cooking with a pro-level stainless steel range and serving from a lovely assortment of talavera dishes and handblown glassware. Each of the three individually decorated bedrooms has a writing desk and private en suite bathroom to provide those traveling in a group a comfortable place to retreat. A trusted housekeeper will keep you feeling pampered by thoroughly attending to chores three days a week. She can shop and cook for you as an optional service by arrangement and comes highly recommended by us and others.

Perched on a rocky bluff above the gorgeous La Ropa beach, this three-bedroom, split-level 1900 square foot space, including the large terrace, is at the top level of a small condominium community, affording lots of privacy and unique views, with two bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs. Upon purchase in 1999, it was largely a blank, white canvas inside but with stunning vistas from the windows and private terrace. As busy working people, we searched for someone locally with the integrity as well as artistic sensibility to transform this big shell into something we could dream about when we were away from it and feel captivated by when we were present. That person turned out to be Nicole Dugal, a designer of Canadian origin who had done the interiors of Casa Que Canta (an award winning local boutique hotel) and other beautiful homes in the area. We feared she would find the project too small to be of interest but as it turned out, her main criterion was having 'room to play'. Our criteria were keeping it simple, local, handmade where possible, and Mexican through-and-through. This much was accomplished and more. Over the years, we've added and adapted to keep it updated and even more appealing. In its own way, Casa del Rayo Verde has become our own 'casa que canta' (house that sings). It's about a kind of a feeling you get when you enter, and it's about a kind of dreaming that stays with you long after you leave.

Casa del Rayo Verde was named after an optical phenomenon called the green flash (rayo verde) which can occur shortly after sunsets or before sunrises, when a green spot or line along the horizon may be visible just above the sun for a second or two. Out on the spacious terrace, the many displays of nature's artistry can be appreciated from several vantage points offered by comfortable seating or lounging areas. Here you will find your own appreciation for the changing subtleties of light from sunrise to sunset with starry nights included. We invite you to experience the special magic that emanates from this setting!

About Mona Felts

My husband and I met in Houston, Texas in 1980 and traveled that same year for the first time to Zihuatanejo. Over the next twenty years, we returned intermittently even after relocating to Manhattan where professional commitments, friends and a community keep us very engaged. Our passions include travel, mostly to Mexico, seeing good films on the large screen, cooking and enjoying food from many different cuisines while 'trying' to stay fit! We took up cycling a few years ago and find it the most fun way of getting a workout while also enjoying nature and the outdoors. We were thrilled to discover we could keep our cycling routine while in Zihuatanejo by heading over to Ixtapa early in the mornings, renting a bike and taking the well maintained off-road path through an ecological park that leads to Playa Linda.

Mona Felts purchased this condo in 1999

Why Mona Felts chose Zihuatanejo

By returning many times over a period of years, even as the area started to grow and become more developed, we were always met with an attitude of warmth and welcoming by the local people. The magic of the surroundings with its unique blend of the tropics, the beach and the mountains never ceased to inspire awe and an immediate feeling of tranquility. We were also astonished that the town government kept its promise to not allow high-rises and to keep the views and the beach open to all the people. While there is more of a presence of North Americans visiting as tourists or pursuing their dreams of acquiring an oceanfront home in Mexico, Zihuatanejo remains essentially a Mexican town. It boasts a thriving mercado which spills out from the official municipal market into the streets, with teeming piles of tropical fruits, vegetables, fresh fish, carne of all kinds, along with small fondas transforming these raw ingredients into freshly prepared local specialties along with as many handmade tortillas as you can eat. The Zocalo (town plaza) is centered around a basketball court right in front of the town beach where most evenings one can stroll, indulge in delicious street foods and watch whatever game of volleyball or basketball is being played. Today with the added conveniences of a large American-style supermarket, a wider array of dining establishments and small venues to hear live music, there is no shortage of ways to enjoy one's time.

What makes this condo unique

After a couple of years of looking and considering different options, in 1999 we finally found the place that met all our requirements. The most important was having a view of the water and being able to access it and the beach comfortably by foot. Perhaps equally importantly, we wanted a large enough private terrace or deck that would allow us to enjoy being outdoors as much as possible, given the cold winters here in the Northeast that keep us wrapped up and indoors so many months of the year. What we got in addition to all that was a condominium that feels more like a house, very private, at the top of the complex with views not only of the one of the most beautiful Bays on the Pacific, with its pristine mile-long beach, but also an unobstructed view of the foothills of the Southern Sierra Mountain Range. Not only can we walk down to La Ropa beach, we can extend our workout by taking the fork in the road and hiking another 20 minutes over some large rocks to reach Las Gatas beach, a uniquely beautiful stretch of white sand with even more protected waters for swimming and snorkeling. As at La Ropa beach, the string of beachfront restaurants with palapas or umbrellas invite you to spend the day, sipping cold drinks and enjoying a lunch of fresh fish. If you're not up for hiking back the same way you came, you can take a small water taxi which will bring you across the bay to the municipal pier. From there you can wander around the town before hopping a cab for the ride home.

Great family time in Zihuataneo!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for our spring break week March 20 to 28. The weather was the same every day. Blue skies and 28. The casa was perfect for our needs. Our two teenage sons each had a room with a shower and my wife and I had the main bedroom upstairs with the beautiful view of the bay and the ocean sounds. If it ever got too hot inside the a/c worked great to cool the rooms down quickly. The pool area was very nice however if you have any mobility issues this is likely not the place for you as there are a lot of stairs to get there. It is also a brief hike to the beach which is not to bad going downhill but the return can be more of a challenge especially in the heat. The beach is terrific with beautiful sand and bath warm water and was never busy at all. What we liked best about the casa was the beautiful terrace which is huge. It is partially sheltered from sun when you need a break from it and just want to lie in the hammock and enjoyed the breeze. When you want sun you can move the loungers toward the edge and tan till your done. We enjoyed morning coffee out there and spent a lot of time reading there as well. The view of the bay is outstanding. We felt very safe staying here and would certainly stay again upon a return visit to Zihuataneo.

Bali Hai, move over!

  • 5 of 5

The pictures do not deceive. Casa del Rayo Verde is tasteful, warm and cozy. The view reminded me of being on Bora Bora's Motu Sofitel. Anyone who's experienced the magic of Tahiti will know what I mean. Thank you, Mona, for accommodating me and my entourage (from Saskatoon Canada) for the week of January 31 to February 7. Olga was available to cook two dinners for us, and even helped me do laundry. In terms of the pool, the 90 steps were welcome exercise to all but one of us. My husband, who has developed ambulatory problems in the last few years, could only manage the pool once a day; but the pool's length, which allowed my husband to keep up his decades-long 5-days-a-week regimen of swimming 40 lengths, more than made up for the climb. Anyone who's considering booking the Casa del Rayo Verde, do not hesitate. Mona supplies a comprehensive information package. For those who have ambulatory difficulties, follow Mona's instructions re the dependable taxi services. Once the service/driver gets to know you, they go out of their way to accommodate you, and the costs are easily affordable.

Wonderful Place

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful place, an amazing host.....Right from the beginning Mona was wonderful to work with, she supplied an amazing amount of info that helped us get from our home to hers with no problems. The condo was so warm and welcoming, everything that you need is there so you don't even need to bring beach towels. We had Luis pick us up and made a quick stop at the grocery/atm, we also pre arranged Olga to cook that first night so we could relax after our day of travel.

Amazing Wedding!

  • 5 of 5

Our experience was wonderful. The condo was everything and more that we anticipated. The views are stunning, the condo is well equipped, linens ample, personal touches charming and in keeping with the environment (I don't want to stay in another country and feel like I'm sleeping in a condo in Ohio...), owner information and recommendations bountiful, and Olga did a great job cleaning. With a stream of visitors coming and going for the wedding, there was a lot to stay on top of. We did our best to keep things organized enough for her to clean and it all worked out well. I would definitely stay again. Thanks Mono for being a helpful and gracious "host".

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

This was our annual girls getaway-my sister myself and my girlfriend. From the beginning and all the way to the end of our trip Mona was more than helpful and timely with information and suggestions to make our stay a wonderful one. I highly recommend following her lead on things. We were there during the off season and it was very quiet during our stay. The home is spacious and it was so nice for each of us to have our own bedroom and bath. The views are great, plenty of seating outside ( I spent most of my time in the hammock) and as one prior reviewer said, it stays shady if that what you want-if not there is a spot for sunning as well.

Olga is absolutely fantastic-make sure you have her prepare supper for you at least once and if you like shrimp ask for the garlic shrimp-unbeatable.

The walk to the beach is easy and there are plenty of places to eat along the water. The trip into town is a little longer but well worth it. The first time we went into town we walked back, the second time we learned our lesson and took a taxi-for 2-3 dollars including a large tip and it was WELL worth it.

I would also HIGHLY recommend hiring Jose Aldama as a tour guide-we also used him for airport transportation to and from the condo. He is VERY knowledgeable, speaks great English and has a great sense of humor. Were we to do it again, I would hire him to pick us up at the airport-he knows right where he is going-and stopped for us to grocery shop. I would hire him for the next day or second day of our stay for a tour-he does a great job-and it really gives you a better sense of your surroundings and the layout if you have never visited before and then I would just get a regular taxi for the return to the airport.

He can provide any type of tour for you-he has a brand new AIR CONDITIONED (remember, it was low season-translation hot and humid) Suburban. He is an official tour guide for Mexico-evidently no small feat-and his professionalism shows.

We ran across a great Panderia (bakery) just one street off the boardwalk-I can't remember the name of it but it has a small wooden sign hanging over the door and the bakery goods are displayed in the window. From the boardwalk turn into the alley that houses the "library" (as in some books in a stand) its just a wide alley, go to the next street and turn left and its the second or third little shop on the right. Awful description I know but a local can help.

Mona is great, the condo is great, the staff is great, DO IT!

The Best Gets Better

  • 5 of 5

We are repeat visitors, so we are already very much in thrall of the perfect view from the Rayo Verde’s wonderful deck as well as appreciating the other features of this wonderful three-bedroom home overlooking La Ropa Beach and Zihuatanejo Bay. With all the good things in place, we didn’t expect that it could even get better, but it has: new great gas stove so we can really cook; new terrific mattresses; new TV and Blu-Ray; delightful new bits of Mexican folk art in Mona’s collection. New furniture by the pool too. All this just keeps us coming back to the Rayo Verde’s warm embrace. We feel pampered by the care Mona takes to anticipate needs and desires so that our holiday is always perfect. This place is the best.
