SPACIOUS NORTH WOODS HOME IN THE HEART OF GRAND MARAIS

Grand Marais House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

The Gibbs House is a bright and spacious home situated just blocks from beautiful Lake Superior in the very unique charming harbor town of Grand Marais, Minnesota.

The house sleeps eight people in its three bedrooms (2 queen beds, 1 double bed) and a convertible sofa which becomes another queen bed. There are two bathrooms, a washer and dryer, a fully equipped kitchen and a dining table that will seat eight. There is both a high chair and a booster chair for our younger guests.

We provide WiFi and a telephone with domestic long distance for those who want to stay connected. For rainy days or quiet evenings, a DVD player, along with a number of movies (for both children and adults) will provide entertainment.

There is a 'Killerspin' ping pong table in the 'lower room' for evenings or rainy days. The lower room is a large room at the front of the house, down four steps from the main level. In addition to the ping pong table, there is a reading nook with a small library of books for children and adults. The convertible sofa is located here as well as one of the bathrooms. The lower room can be closed off from the upper level by the French doors at the top of the stairs.

In warmer months, take advantage of outdoor dining and grilling on the back patio. Enjoy reading, writing, yoga, art, or quiet contemplation in the small studio building in the backyard.

Located at the base of the old Gunflint Trail and close to downtown, the Gibbs House provides ample opportunity to enjoy local area attractions. Quaint shops, local restaurants with amazing food, the North House Folk School, the Art Colony and several churches are all within walking distance. Depending on how many groceries you buy, walking to and from either of the town's grocery stores - Johnson's Foods or Gene's IGA, or the Cook County Whole Foods Co-op - is easy, too. The restaurants in Grand Marais are incredibly wonderful - very different from what one would expect in a small town. Our favorites - all within walking distance are: The Angry Trout, The Pie Place (serving wonderful breakfasts, lunches, dinners and wine in addition to the best pie), The Crooked Spoon, and the new and excellent, Harbor Grille. These all offer fine dining. For more casual dining, The Gunflint Tavern is wonderful (try their veggie burger) and of course, Sven and Oles is great - especially for families. If you are a true 'Up -norther', you are a coffee lover, and there is no place anywhere better for coffee than The Java Moose! In addition to coffee, they have great pastries, cookies, and fabulous homemade sandwiches. The staff is absolutely delightful, too! Amazingly, all of this is within easy walking distance!

Venture a bit farther along the shore to explore miles of hiking trails or drive up the Gunflint Trail to access the pristine inland lakes of the Boundary Waters/Voyageurs National Park. Take your kayak or canoe with you for a tranquil day on the water.

Just 260 miles from Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Gibbs House provides all the amenities and comforts of home and an authentic taste of life in the North Woods. It is the perfect home-base for a couple, larger family, book club, fishing group or.... We know you will enjoy your stay!

I was five years old when I first visited Grand Marais and still remember that trip! Years later, the North Shore was a natural place for our honeymoon and on that trip, we began to dream of buying property in Grand Marais. That dream stayed alive all of the years our children were growing up as we vacationed there every summer. The beauty of the lake and the north woods never grew old.

The Owner purchased this house in 2011

When we found this wonderful house for sale in the fall of 2011, we knew it was a way to make our dream come true and share it with others.

Grand Marais has managed to change with the world in good ways, but it remains a uniquely welcoming community where family, outdoor activities and the arts combine with love and care for the beautiful natural environment.

We love hiking the many trails, canoeing in the boundary waters, just 'being' by Lake Superior, coffee and conversation at the Java Moose, and the excellent meals served at the restaurants in Grand Marais.

Low Gear Luxury

After two stays in the area when we realized we were wasting too much time and gas driving to and from town we decided to look for a place IN Grand Marais this summer. And did we ever find one! We parked our car upon arrival and walked about the rest of the week. The Gibbs House was hard to leave at the end of our stay. It is comfortable, tastefully decorated and the location, location, location is top notch. From the end of the driveway just coast down the hill into the heart of a cozy village with a Cape Cod vibe. The view of the harbor is breathtaking. We figured the ping pong table might come in handy as an emergency backup in the event of poor weather but our three kids, aged 17-23, played out their sibling rivalries daily in a lovingly competitive tournament. The beds are comfy, the showers are hot and the kitchen is well-equipped. And did I mention the location, location, location? Also, the landlords are communicative and accommodating. Time spent in Grand Marais at the Gibbs House is a tonic. On our last night we ate @ The Angry Trout and toasted to coming back for another dose next summer. Hopefully this review doesn't cost us our preferred dates!

Girls weekend

  • 4 of 5
Gibbs house was located in a very nice area, close to the lake, shops and restaurants. Love the Harbor House restaurant, Cindy, the owner makes the best cheesecake ever. We had it twice! Unfortunately, the weather was not desirable and we ended up in the house some as we couldn't really see or enjoy the lake due to cloudy, rainy and foggy weather. We spent some time playing ping pong at the house and baking chocolate chip cookies, which was awesome, but when we went to watch TV to see if the weather would have any breaks for outdoor fun, we found no picture. A call to the owner told us that we would be there the whole weekend without TV, so we did have a variety of DVD's to choose from. It is unfortunate that it was just assumed that because we booked early and things changed that it would suit our needs. A simple call to us would have been appropriate and appreciated. Otherwise the home was clean and great for a girls weekend.

Highly recommended

My wife and two young children stayed here in June, and couldn't have been more pleased. We loved everything about this rental. The kitchen is surprisingly well set up, and there was ample space for the whole family to make use of. It was very clean and very comfortable. Our only complaint is that four nights just wasn't enough!

A perfect gem

  • 5 of 5
Three generations of my family gathered at the Gibbs House in Grand Marais. The home is absolutely charming--exactly like it's pictured in the ad. Its wide open layout was great for adult conversation; the grandchildren played in the lower level and we could keep an eye on them through the French doors. (The lower level is down three steps from the main level--not a basement!) Everything we needed--from high chairs to wine glasses--was provided. I highly recommend the Gibbs House. It's an easy walk to great shopping, eating, and skipping stones in the harbor. BTW, lack of a larger TV was not an issue for us. When we visit Grand Marais, watching TV is at the very bottom of our list of fun things to do.

Girls weekend

This was a nice place, close to town. The one thing that was a dissappointment was that there was NO TV as noted in the amenities. And if you do watch DVD's the screen is like a monitor--about.....17" or so. When we called about the absense of the TV we were told renters weren't using it so why pay the large cable bill. My question is how would the owner know if anyone watched TV or not. ? We had bad weather so watching TV was about the only thing to do (other than play ping pong--which was fun to do) All in all it's a nice place to rent but just know there isn't a TV & the viewing monitor is very small. It's a computer monitor.

Owner's Response: I am sorry you were disappointed about the TV. When you booked your reservation a year ago, there was, indeed, TV reception and it was listed on the amenities list. We contacted several of our guests regarding their use of the TV. Finding very little, we discontinued it and took it off the amenities list. The DVDs are played on a television set...yes, it is small, but it is not a computer screen. I am sorry you found this to be a problem.
