This impeccably maintained 1890 carriage house is in a dream location. It is much wider than the usual Capitol Hill row houses, allowing for more windows and much better proportioned rooms. Its semi-open floor plan was way ahead of its time. The house is furnished for a family rather than for large groups, by prioritizing space and comfort over the number of beds. For example, the 'Map Room' could have been offered as a third bedroom because it is easily large enough. Yet with it's row of three windows we felt the room would make a great reading spot, so you will find it set up as a study. We will be happy to supply a crib or an air bed for the Map Room upon request. This house is in the very heart of a bustling and cosmopolitan city, yet is a quiet oasis in a friendly neighborhood. If you're not staying at the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue, the Yellow House half a block off Pennsylvania is the next best thing!

The house is located on a quiet friendly street with a park at each end of our block. We are around the block from Pennsylvania Avenue with its restaurants and sidewalk cafes. The Capitol, Library of Congress, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Metro (the underground) are all just a couple of blocks away. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs. The house is within the close-in perimeter of heightened security patrolled by the Washington Metropolitan Police, the US Capitol Police and the US Secret Service. We recommend that visitors come without cars, because the most enjoyable way to get around DC is on foot and Metro. Escaping DC traffic is a major advantage of staying on the hill.

How Reservations Work: Start by checking our online calendar and making an inquiry from the website. We will typically respond within 1 day. If we have availability for your dates, we will respond with a rental agreement for your signature. To lock your dates, we must receive a signed agreement (mail, fax, email) and a $350 deposit (mailed check, credit card). We lock dates by sending you a countersigned agreement and updating the availability calendar. Full payment is due 2 weeks before arrival to maintain a reservation.

Cancellations: If you have to cancel a reservation, we will return all funds received when cancellation notice is given 30 days or more prior to arrival. If given less than 30 days prior to arrival, we will clear the availability calendar and make an honest effort to rebook the property. Funds received will be returned on a pro-rated basis for successfully re-rented dates. For example, if you cancel a 2 week booking less than 30 days before arrival and we succeed in renting for 1 week within your reserved dates, we will return 50% of the funds received.

Arrival and departure logistics: Check out time is 11AM, check in time 3PM. This is to allow time for the house cleaners if there is a same-day change-over. If either time poses an issue please let us know, as a it may be possible to make alternative arrangements. We use a code lock that is re-programmed for each reservation. There is no need to mail or drop off keys, and you can arrive at any time of night.

Perfect for Family

My husband, myself, and two college aged daughters recently stayed in the Yellow House. There was plenty of room for us to spread out, everything we needed was in the house, and the neighborhood amenities were very convenient. The house is very close to the Metro which we used to go all over D.C. The owner was great to deal with. He provided a detailed handout about the house, the neighborhood, shopping, and even sight seeing suggestions! He is very organized and quite prompt about responding to e-mails and phone calls. We inadvertantly came to D.C. on one of the coldest days of the year. Alec was nice enough to come by the house to turn up the hot water heater and the heat before we arrived, so that we would be comfortable when we arrived. This was my first time using Home Away and I was a little nervous. My fears were unfounded. The house was great and the owner perfect to work with. He was very prompt in returning our deposit. I hope to return to D.C.some day. When I return, I will be staying at Yellow House!

Luxurious stay in Washington DC

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this renovated carriage home. The house is ideal for a family wanting to stay in the capitol for a week or two and it is conveniently located to the Eastern Market as well as the US Capitol. Centered in a lovely part of town (ideal for morning walks), I would highly recommend staying here. We enjoyed coming back after sight seeing to a place which felt homely and we saved a couple of pennies cooking most of our meals in a kitchen, which we believed to be well equipped. The showers unfortunately were not hot enough for what we are usually use to, but the hospitality from the owner from the beginning of the booking process up until the end made up for that. Alec, the owner, gave us great introductory information about the house and Washington DC, which we continually referred to. Overall, the city and stay left a great impression on us and if we go back again, we will know who to contact with regards to accommodation.

Great House in Well Located, Lovely Neighborhood

Great place. Spent a week here over Christmas and would stay here again. The layout of the house worked very well for 5 adults – plenty of space to comfortably spread out or congregate. The house is very well stocked with just about anything you could need and each of the bedrooms is equally comfortable/cozy. It’s all very well thought-out and fresh. Very cute fenced in back and front yards. The neighborhood is great - series of adorable townhouses with plenty of parks scattered throughout. We were able to quickly walk to the Capital/mall or easily catch the metro, which is a very short walk away. About a block away is Starbucks, wine shop, cafes/restaurants, pubs, convenience store to pick-up food necessities, etc while a few blocks further is the Eastern Market and a couple blocks of great restaurants and shops. Access to Eastern Market area was really a plus for us – excellent food market plus great restaurants within <10min walk after a long day touring DC was very welcome. Owner was great to deal with.
