CARRIAGE HOUSE IN PRIME LOCATION (QUIET, SAFE, WALK TO MUSEUMS)

Capitol Hill House Rental Photos and Description

1 King bed, 2 Fulls, 1 Queen and a full sized crib

This house is incredibly centrally located yet is also in a most peaceful spot, set back from a quiet street with a bicycle lane.

Within a radius of less two and a half blocks you will find the Library of Congress, a Metro station, Eastern Market, a Starbucks, and at the time of writing ten restaurants. The National Mall, around which the Smithsonian museums are clustered, is only a short walk away. The house has a Zillow walkability rating of 95 ('Walkers Paradise.') A rack of bright red public bicycles is half a block from your door.

The Yellow House is ideal for a family with children who would like to visit sites such as the Smithsonian museums, the US Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, the Library of Congress, or the Newseum, among many others. Our neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is a historical conservation area that is quaint, cosmopolitan, affluent, and highly secure. We are so close to the US Capitol that the house is inside the perimeter patrolled by Capitol security. The neighborhood is where most members of congress live.

The house comes with a little shopping cart, which you can take to the grocery store around the corner, or two blocks to Eastern Market, a wonderful 140 year old traditional market where greengrocers, butchers, bakers, etc. carry the absolute freshest groceries you will find anywhere in the city. Walking your shopping cart to Eastern Market, nobody will suspect you are a tourist.

Visitors who arrive by car typically park it for the duration of their stay. The house includes a parking permit.

Your rental comes with all linens, towels, a blow drier, high quality toiletries, and propane for the grill. All you need to bring is a tooth brush!

About Alec Smyth

I am an engineer and management consultant with a passion for marine environmental issues and ocean exploration.

Alec Smyth purchased this house in 2009

Why Alec Smyth chose Capitol Hill

My wife and I invest in properties that meet two fundamental criteria; they must be ideally located for visitors, and nice enough that we would like to live in them ourselves. That translates to properties located in the five or six blocks of Capitol Hill closest to the National Mall, homes with historic charm, and with open floor plans on the ground floor. They must be on streets that are attractive yet quiet.

What makes this house unique

There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

Guestbook comments from the owner

HI Alec,

We had such a great time we did not want to leave! Your home was really wonderful and we will definitely contact you again next time we come to DC. Quick question – do you know what the mattress was on the king bed? We found it to be really comfortable. Thanks again!

A perfect spot in Washington!

  • 5 of 5
My family had the best stay in the Yellow House this past week... It's a beautiful place to come home to, even more beautiful than the great photos online! Everything was clean and well maintained, and owner was helpful with questions prior to our arrival. It was a treat to stay in a place that was quiet and safe, yet also close to the sites of Capitol Hill and many small restaurants. We would like to come back to enjoy more of the same, but also to see the front and back gardens when things are in bloom. Book a stay yourself if you are lucky enough to see availability left for your dates of travel!

Lovely and spacious

  • 5 of 5
This was our first trip to Washington D.C. and we are so thankful we found this home away from home. We were so close to the sights we wanted to see. It was great to be able to come home and rest and relax after a day of sightseeing. I also enjoyed the fact that we cold cook meals when wanted. Since it is not possible to see everything in D.C. in one week, we hope to be able to come backand stay in this wonderul house.

Lovely house in a fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5
We have just returned from a wonderful trip to Washington with our three teenage children. The Yellow House was perfect accommodation, providing plenty of space for everyone and within walking distance of the main sights and a good selection of restaurants.

The house was clean and very well equipped and spacious with comfortable beds and plenty of good quality clean towels and linen.

The neighbourhood was lovely to walk around, both quiet (a contrast to New York where we had been previously) and safe. Five minutes walk to a great selection of restaurants with a few just round the corner on Pennsylvania Ave. and we would recommend the wider selection of restaurants on Barracks Row and also the 'Tortilla Coast' beside Capitol South metro.

It was also an easy 10 minute walk to the Capitol building, Library of Congress and the Supreme Court.

Alec was a great host - completely unobtrusive yet made it clear that he was available if we needed him.

We would highly recommend this property.

Great House, Great Location, Great Host

  • 5 of 5
My family (including 3 kiddos under 3) stayed for a weekend at this charming house, in the middle of it all. It is walking distance to so many great landmarks, restaurants, bars, and more. Alex (the owner) has a child gate installed at the top of the stairs, which was a small luxury we weren't expecting while traveling with the little ones. The house was lovely, clean, and had any convenience you might need while being away.

When we arrived, the crib was not set up for one of the little ones, and Alex came right over. We were more than happy to set it up ourselves if we could just get the tools, but when we arrived home from having lunch the crib was not only put together, but set up with sheets, etc. He truly makes sure that his guests have what they need to have a stress free time.

We were able to walk everywhere we needed to go (plus there is a metro stop very close by) but he does include a parking permit if you need to have a rental car.

I would absolutely stay at "The Yellow House" again.

Fabulous house!

  • 5 of 5
We just stayed at the Yellow house last week with our 3 kids. As previous reviews have mentioned, the house is clean, well maintained, and close to the Capitol Hill side of things in Washington, DC. You'll have everything you'll need here. We had a few issues come up while we were there which could have caused our ratings to go down had we not had the most responsive owner EVER. You will be very well taken care of in this house, probably better than any hotel you'd choose. One thing to be aware of....the stairs in this house may present a challenge for those not able to navigate a narrow curving stairway, but I'd guess that's typical with the age of houses like this. It wasn't an issue for us at all.

Fantastic!

Alec was a fabulous host. He is quick to respond to emails and address any concerns you might have - I'm a bit of an over-planner but he was gracious with my 50 questions! The house is great and in a superb location. Don't miss out on this one! A definite must for families with young kids - having a full-size crib for my two year old was fantastic!

Car: not necessary

The house is located on a quiet friendly Capitoll Hill block with a park at each end, around the corner from Pennsylvania Avenue with its restaurants and sidewalk cafes. The Capitol, Library of Congress, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Metro (the underground) are all just a couple of blocks away. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs. The house is within the close-in perimeter of heightened security patrolled by the Washington Metropolitan Police, the US Capitol Police and the US Secret Service.

We recommend that visitors come without cars, because our location allows access to the sights on foot and by Metro. However, a free visitor parking permit is included in your rental just in case.

Other Activities: US Capitol, Smithsonian Museums, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, National Archives, Newseum, Folger Shakespeare
