Photos and Description of the Capitol Hill vacation house rental
1 king bed, 2 doubles, 2 full bathrooms, study with crib and/or air mattress

This house is only two blocks from the Library of Congress, yet in a most peaceful spot. It is set back from the street, and wider than the usual Capitol Hill row houses, allowing for more windows and better proportioned rooms. It is furnished for a family rather than for large groups, by prioritizing space and quality over the number of beds. For example, the 'Map Room' could have been offered as a third bedroom because it is easily large enough, yet with it's row of three windows we felt the room would make a great light-filled reading spot, so you will find it set up as a large study. We are happy to set up a crib and/or air bed in the Map Room upon request.

The home is ideal for a family with children who would like to visit sites such as the Smithsonian museums, the US Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, the Library of Congress, or the Newseum, among many others. Our neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is quiet yet so centrally located that the sites are within walking distance, a huge plus since none of them has parking. You will live like a local, walking your shopping cart to the grocery store that is just around the corner, or getting around on DC's bright red public bicycles, which you can pick up at a bike rack only half a block from your door.

Should you wish to travel further afield, you could catch the Metro (a.k.a. underground) at Union Station, or pick up a rental car there. Visitors who arrive by car typically park it for the duration of their stay. The house includes a parking permit. If arriving by rental car, you can return it at Union Station to save money during your stay.

Your rental comes with all linens, towels, a blow drier, a starter set of toiletries, and propane for the grill. All you need to bring is a tooth brush!

So how to proceed?

We recommend using the 'Book it Now' button, which will confirm availability and provide a detailed quote before you reach the screen on which you are asked to commit. We book with the $120 cleaning fee, and the balance is due 30 days before arrival. All payments are self-service, via credit card or e-check using VRBO's secure payments page, and you do not need to provide us credit card information.

If we don't have your dates available, you may want to check our two other two-bedroom homes, HomeAway properties #339969 and #3014729.

About Alec Smyth

Alec Smyth purchased this house in 2009
Why Alec Smyth chose Capitol Hill

My wife and I invest in properties that meet two fundamental criteria; they must be ideally located for visitors, and nice enough that we would like to live in them ourselves. That translates to properties located in the five or six blocks of Capitol Hill closest to the National Mall, homes with historic charm, and with open floor plans on the ground floor. They must be on streets that are attractive yet quiet.

What makes this house unique

There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

The house is located on a quiet friendly Capitoll Hill block with a park at each end, around the corner from Pennsylvania Avenue with its restaurants and sidewalk cafes. The Capitol, Library of Congress, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Metro (the underground) are all just a couple of blocks away. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs. The house is within the close-in perimeter of heightened security patrolled by the Washington Metropolitan Police, the US Capitol Police and the US Secret Service.

We recommend that visitors come without cars, because our location allows access to the sights on foot and by Metro. However, a free visitor parking permit is included in your rental just in case.

Other Activities: US Capitol, Smithsonian Museums, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, National Archives, Newseum, Folger Shakespeare

A perfect spot in Washington!

My family had the best stay in the Yellow House this past week... It's a beautiful place to come home to, even more beautiful than the great photos online! Everything was clean and well maintained, and owner was helpful with questions prior to our arrival. It was a treat to stay in a place that was quiet and safe, yet also close to the sites of Capitol Hill and many small restaurants. We would like to come back to enjoy more of the same, but also to see the front and back gardens when things are in bloom. Book a stay yourself if you are lucky enough to see availability left for your dates of travel!

Pleasant stay in an charming interesting neighbourhood

We stayed in this nice townhouse in a treelined lane close to capitol Hill . There was a pleasant garden. The house was very good taken care off. Beds in good condition. Bathrooms okay as was the kitchen.
Walking to main attractions was easy to do. The floors are still cracking. Without something of a welcome e.g. With flowers or a bottle of wine and a little welcomenote from the owner it gives a little impersonal feelingl. The furnishings and decoration could have some more attention.
All in all a good base to visit Washington dc with two couples.

Location is Perfect!

This is a wonderful home, in a beautiful area. The Location is within walking distance to everything, and I mean everything! There is no need for a car.
Great restaurants, local pubs, an incredible outdoor flea market, shops and of course "The Mall"
The Cherry blossoms were in full bloom, the squirrels were running around the back yard. Red cardinals were singing, and enjoyed every minute of it.
We cooled down with a margarita after getting off the Metro, there is taco shop right across the street from the exit. Then its just a short walk up the street to the house. Everyday was an adventure, meeting new people, talking to future congressmen and senators.
Washington DC is truly amazing, We are American Proud, and everyday we visited another reason why we love this country! Take the Segway Tour fun, fun, fun
Thank you for a lovely place to stay, we will never forget this vacation.

Charming!

This is the place to stay if you want to be extremely close to the Capitol, the National Mall, popular restaurants, Eastern Market (!!!!), and the metro. Safe, cute neighborhood and house was more than accommodating. While parking is at a premium in most of DC, we often had parking places available right in front of the house. Having said that, you will not need a car unless you are leaving the central DC area. We would stay here again.

Excellent Choice

Overall, the property was very clean, Alec was right on top of things and responded promptly, the kitchen was well-equipped, and the location was near a small grocery store, the Eastern Market, the Metro, and within walking distance to the Capitol. The only reasons for not receiving 5 stars was that he did not have a computer and he could have used some help decorating. The parking certificate is a big plus for anyone driving. The neighborhood is safe with many restaurants nearby. Eastern Market is FABULOUS with fresh fruits and vegetables, fantastic meats and fish, and a bakery. We are big breakfast people, but did not find any breakfast restaurants to rave about - perhaps we just did not look around enough. You will not go wrong with this property - much better than a nondescript hotel!
