This house is incredibly centrally located yet is also in a most peaceful spot, set back from a quiet street with a bicycle lane.
Within a radius of less two and a half blocks you will find the Library of Congress, a Metro station, Eastern Market, a Starbucks, and at the time of writing ten restaurants. The National Mall, around which the Smithsonian museums are clustered, is only a short walk away. The house has a Zillow walkability rating of 95 ('Walkers Paradise.') A rack of bright red public bicycles is half a block from your door.
The Yellow House is ideal for a family with children who would like to visit sites such as the Smithsonian museums, the US Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, the Library of Congress, or the Newseum, among many others. Our neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is a historical conservation area that is quaint, cosmopolitan, affluent, and highly secure. We are so close to the US Capitol that the house is inside the perimeter patrolled by Capitol security. The neighborhood is where most members of congress live.
The house comes with a little shopping cart, which you can take to the grocery store around the corner, or two blocks to Eastern Market, a wonderful 140 year old traditional market where greengrocers, butchers, bakers, etc. carry the absolute freshest groceries you will find anywhere in the city. Walking your shopping cart to Eastern Market, nobody will suspect you are a tourist.
Visitors who arrive by car typically park it for the duration of their stay. The house includes a parking permit.
Your rental comes with all linens, towels, a blow drier, high quality toiletries, and propane for the grill. All you need to bring is a tooth brush!

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?
Alec Smyth purchased this house in 2009
The Yellow House is on a quiet street, yet so close to the US Capitol that it is within the perimeter patrolled by the Capitol security, within the area that is sealed off for Presidential inaugurations, etc. Most vacation rentals advertise proximity to Metro. We are two blocks from Metro, but chances are you will not take it because you are already so close to the major sites of interest.
The house itself is much wider than the rowhouses typical of the neighborhood, and has an open floor plan. These features translate to a bright ambiance full of natural light. Please notice also what you see through the windows in the listing photos - trees!
There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.
We had such a great time we did not want to leave! Your home was really wonderful and we will definitely contact you again next time we come to DC. Quick question – do you know what the mattress was on the king bed? We found it to be really comfortable. Thanks again!
My family had the best stay in the Yellow House this past week... It's a beautiful place to come home to, even more beautiful than the great photos online! Everything was clean and well maintained, and owner was helpful with questions prior to our arrival. It was a treat to stay in a place that was quiet and safe, yet also close to the sites of Capitol Hill and many small restaurants. We would like to come back to enjoy more of the same, but also to see the front and back gardens when things are in bloom. Book a stay yourself if you are lucky enough to see availability left for your dates of travel!
We had a wonderful stay at the Yellow House. Plenty of room for the 5 of us, including my Mom (70s) and our twin teenage boys. Location is perfect, no need for a car- the Capitol South Metro stop is close by and the Capitol, Library of Congress and Supreme Court are a short, safe walk away. Eastern Market is a must, we enjoyed the fresh pastas, produce and steaks, which we grilled perfectly in the lovely backyard. Very clean and welcoming home. Well appointed kitchen, updated bathrooms, full laundry, comfortable beds, plenty of extra pillows and blankets. Lovely linens and toiletries. We had groceries delivered via Peapod but Roland's is right around the corner and so is Capitol Wine and Spirits. Take a glass of wine out to the patio, perfect way to end a busy day of sightseeing. Large Flat screen TVs in Living room and master bedroom. DVD, Bose Radio, WiFi...Alec has thought of everything. Enjoy!
I booked this house for a group of my girlfriends and their kids. I wanted a place where we could hang out as a group and do some daytime activity that was close by. This house worked out perfectly. We were impressed that it had all the amenities of a hotel (barring room service of course) such as towels, linens, soap, shampoo, shaving kit, etc. I had looked for a hotel that had adjoining rooms but there were few choices and the prices were not acceptable. At this house we could congregate and everything was very comfortable. It worked really well. The only downside was the parking. It was rainy when we arrived and street spaces near the house were hard to come by. Luckily, we didn't plan to drive much so once we found a space we could stick to it for the remainder of the trip since we metroed and walked the rest of the time. Metro was conveniently close as was grocery and restaurants. Really was a great location for our weekend together.
The Yellow House was a perfect home away from home. It was very convenient to many DC sights and two metro stops were each just a few blocks away. The house is well maintained and well equipped. The whole family from grandparents to the kids loved it! Alec was great to work with and made our stay great. We will definitely stay there again!
Loved the house. The attention to detail was amazing: kitchen well stocked with cooking and serving implements, fluffy bath towels and good quality linen, lots of tourist info and brochures, so well presented, warm and cosy, yet still roomy for 6 of us.
The eastern market was close by for fresh food shopping, quite a few restaurants nearby and walked to Capitol building, union station etc.
Thank you - for enhancing our time in Washington!
On arrival the house was warm, welcoming and comfortable. The house was clean and the beds were great. The next day we went for a wander and couldn't believe what a fantastic location we were in! We walked a lot, because we could, but when the weather was bad the Metro was easy to get to and use. Plenty of places to get dinner nearby and the Eastern Markets were wonderful. Best pancakes ever! If we ever return to Washington this will be where we will stay. Loved it! Thank you Alec for helping us to make our stay in Washington such a positive experience.
The house is located on a quiet friendly Capitoll Hill block with a park at each end, around the corner from Pennsylvania Avenue with its restaurants and sidewalk cafes. The Capitol, Library of Congress, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Metro (the underground) are all just a couple of blocks away. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs. The house is within the close-in perimeter of heightened security patrolled by the Washington Metropolitan Police, the US Capitol Police and the US Secret Service.
We recommend that visitors come without cars, because our location allows access to the sights on foot and by Metro. However, a free visitor parking permit is included in your rental just in case.
Other Activities: US Capitol, Smithsonian Museums, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, National Archives, Newseum, Folger Shakespeare
