Hi and thank you for your interest in our vacation rental. I am a self-employed timber framer and cabinet maker located in beautiful Machias, Maine. My wife and I purchased this property because of its peaceful location and because we love being on fresh water. I built the camp on nights and weekends over the course of 2 1/2 years and completed it in 2008. My wife, Paula deserves as much credit (and more!) for its completion because she was home with the kids while I got to spend time on site building. It is all hand joinery post and beam construction with many rustic touches. We spend as much time out there as possible with our children and other friends because it is a safe place for kids and pets with no traffic and provides lots of outdoor recreation. We love sharing it other families that want to experience Downeast Maine and all it has to offer.

Eric Holm purchased this cabin in 2004

My wife and I settled in Downeast Maine in 2001 after working overseas and traveling the world for many years because we saw this area as a wonderful area to raise our children with many opportunities for outdoor recreation. It is an hour's drive to a stoplight and a pair of new underwear but we are surrounded by an excellent community.

In Downest Maine we have the benefits of both salt and fresh water activities. We have forests and streams that are clean and hiking trails that you can walk for miles and never see another soul. It is a small but tight community that takes pride in what we have here. The community spirit is active with an outlook to the future to enhance what we have and share it with others.

WONDERFUL HIDDEN WILDERNESS GEM

  • 5 of 5
This was our second year staying here. We love the house and property. It's a charming, cozy little house, right on the river which feeds into the lake. You immediately feel at home and the owners are warm, lovely people who were very helpful and welcoming via phone and email. We enjoyed many hours kayaking and canoeing on the lake and rainy days snuggled inside with a cup of coffee and a book or playing board games with our kids. This is a beautiful, wild area of Maine with incredible coastal hikes and rugged ocean border towns with rich fascinating histories. We loved exploring Lubec and The pirate festival in Eastport and we even did a day trip to Acadia. Great getaway place! Perfect place to hideout from the world and relax with your family. Highly recommend! We'll be back again :)

A TRUE GIFT!!!!

  • 5 of 5
I could not be more appreciative of Eric, Paula and their family and for creating this AMAZING place. I had a really rough start this year, day one and two of my vacation. This family turned it all around -

The house was exactly, as was stated. The clarity of these two in renting their property A PLEASURE to deal with. Eric you must be one of the most laid back people I have ever dealt with, your directness made it all so simple and a true pleasure. You delivered exactly what you sold. That is integrity.

The house is really well located for all hiking trails, restaurants, Campobello - Again made it so easy to take off for the day and see and do so much without spending hrs. on the road.

The house is so well equipped and super clean. I am a caterer and chef. Stove works awesome!!! Gas!!! Everything worked awesome!!! Made it soooooo enjoyable to even cook on vacation!! Nothing is better than to get some fresh fish or shell fish from Becky's and some pie from Helens - make a salad - your done.

The attention to detail from Both Eric and Paula made this house such a pleasure for all of us - backgammon anyone.....????

THE DECOR IS FANTASTIC!! Again, so full of expression and comfort - it makes it feel like you just put on a great pair of slippers when you walk into this house ..........HOME AT LAST!!Even the dogs were so at ease and relaxed in this space- Because they had space!!

My dog is having a tough time adjusting to the return - guess she misses all that natural nightlife going on in the woods, or sleeping on that porch in the afternoon or that lawn that goes down to the dock.......great yoga space down there on the dock in the afternoon sun or morning mist - - bring your mat if you are so inclined.

Eric, Paula and Family -

THANK YOU AGAIN!!!! Hope to return......

Be Well!! - Patricia, Cookie, Sean, Rachael and Finn

AMAZING PLACE TO STAY!!!

  • 5 of 5
We absolutely loved our stay here. We travel quite a bit in the US and this is now our #1 favorite place out of all the places we have stayed. The owners have thought of everything. We took the canoe out several times and caught multiple fish! We enjoyed sitting out in the yard in the chairs and star watching. We cooked breakfast and dinner here each day and kitchen was stocked with all the needed supplies. We enjoyed playing the games that were in the living room. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were cute and cozy. It was close to Lubec and Machias so easy to get to things yet still totally in the woods and secluded. We recommend to anyone traveling in this part of the country that you stay in this lovely camp.

COMFORTABLE HOME AWAY FROM HOME

  • 5 of 5
This was one of the most peaceful places we have stayed in a long time. Completely private at the end of the road we saw no other people while at the cabin. Our dogs loved that they could just run outside, down to the river and swim. The cabin was well equiped with everything we needed, including boats! The cabin is exactly as described. It was very clean, well maintained, and comfortable. Great for sunrise from the porch, camp fires in the evening, star gazing, and fishing. While there we explored the many interesting things that the area has to offer. It was always a pleasure to return to the cabin at the end of a long day. We wished we had stayed longer in order to enjoy more of the cabin and the surrounding area.

PEACE & COMFORT IN DOWNEAST—GREAT FOR DOGS!

Peace & Comfort in Downeast—GREAT for dogs!
  • 5 of 5
We're a couple in our early 30's, recently re-located from Maine down to Boston with our 2 dogs. For the past 7 years we spent our summer vacations in maritime Canada. But because we missed Maine so much, we switched things up this year and decided to vacation in Downeast Maine.

I'm SO glad we did!

Location: just perfect. It's a short 20 minute drive to Lubec and Machias, where you can pick up supplies, grab a nice bite to eat, and meet incredibly friendly locals. Everywhere we went (grocery store, shops, gas stations), led to memorable conversations with locals. Check out nearby Roque Bluffs state park—it's a GEM! And dogs are welcome on-leash at the trails (but not at the beach, which we expected).

Fishing: at the camp was superb. Hop in the canoe and paddle just a few feet to the right of the camp (away from the lake), and you'll get a lot of bites. Sunfish, Small Mouth Bass, and BIG pickerel. We had our best luck around 7pm, just before dusk. My husband went fly-fishing a bunch at local rivers. Pick up a Gazetteer at any gas station, and do some exploring! I went as a tag-along (read: non-fly-fisher) and had fun navigating our way around rivers and roads.

Camp: if we ever build a place in Downeast Maine, we're hiring this guy to do it. The camp was GORGEOUS. You can tell a lot of thought was put into the construction and details. Beds were comfortable, bedrooms spacious, and bathroom very clean (with a washer and dryer, too—score!).

The kitchen was great. I'm a pastry chef, so whenever we travel I always bring my knife roll, a good sheet pan, and other equipment because I'm never sure what I'll find in the kitchen. They had everything—including an espresso machine and a blender. Nice gas stove and a beautiful farmer's sink.

Wildlife sightings: we're pretty sure we saw a bear outside at night! Woke up to our dogs barking like crazy. Also saw eagles, a hare, a grouse, and even a couple of duck families swimming in the river.

Our Dogs say...: We loved running around the camp, smelling all the wildlife, rolling in the dirt driveway, chasing frogs and swimming in the river, relaxing with our owners who work WAY too much, hiking in Roque Bluffs, and eating dinner scraps...which they NEVER let us do at home. This camp is magic.

Thank you Eric and Paula. Even though we never met you in person, we felt so incredibly welcomed. The week flew by, and we found ourselves wishing we could stay another week. It was perfect
