Port Antonio Villa Rental Photos and Description

Magical, serene, best holiday: Port Antonio largest estate: full staff, 4 BD/5B

GORGEOUS NORTH SHORE of Jamaica: Acknowledged to be the most beautiful part of the island, the north shore has lush vegetation in dozens of shades of green, translucent turquoise and dark sapphire ocean waters that are always just the right temperature and, on the beaches close to Norse Hill Estate, uncrowded expanses where you can relax undisturbed. Portland Parish is called the "other Jamaica", a peaceful, laid-back area where celebrities stroll unhindered and you can feel your stress level dropping like a ripe coconut from the palm!

MAIN VILLA of Norse Hill Estate: 4,000 sq ft of graciously designed living with charming details to delight the eye at every turn. The four large bedroom suites can accommodate up to 10 (additional charge for 9th, 10th guests). Each has fans and netting over the beds so that you can leave the walls of windows open to enjoy the fresh breezes and the morning bird song. But, for those who prefer, there is a/c also. This is the ideal escape from the heat and humidity of the US summer! The north shore is well supplied with cooling breezes, despite the tropical climate.

GARDEN COTTAGE: A sensitively designed wooden chalet on two levels; upper king size bedroom with ocean views and optimally designed ventilation louvers to lower temperatures without a/c; wrap-around deck with outside bathroom (more louvers here) with a second twin bedroom on the lower level also with deck and outside bathroom, plus a small dining area and kitchen for meals in privacy. The Garden Cottage is perfect for a couple's retreat from the world, a writer who needs fresh inspiration, a bridal couple who can enjoy privacy while their guests occupy the main villa....... many options for the Garden Cottage. The Garden Cottage can be booked with the main villa, increasing capacity to 14 persons. Contact us for details and pricing.

STAFF: The services of the full staff are included with your booking. They look after you and do the work. You relax or go on excursions. The local manager can suggest and arrange any excursions, often at short notice. The staff will order your food (and alcohol) supplies, in accordance with your preferred menu.

WEDDINGS: Romantic, intimate, never-to-be-forgotten weddings! The gracious villa, huge lawn, gardens filled with rare trees and plants, all combine to provide a spectacular ambience for a small, intimate wedding that will glow brightly in your memories. Norse Hill Estate partners with a wedding planner who specializes in creating magic that will fit any budget. Check the website of White Light Events in Jamaica and look for the Norse Hill Villa photos under the Be Inspired page:

PORT ANTONIO: A travel magazine lists Port Antonio as one of the 20 must-visit places for 2015. Agreed! Some recent articles have given lyrical descriptions of the charms of Port Antonio, like this one:

Check reviews in our listing (enter norse hill estate in your browser) for more on the huge range of activities guests enjoyed: swimming in crystalline water, snorkeling, surfing, tennis, volleyball, strolling through the eight acres of tamed jungle that are our gardens - Norse Hill Estate is a safe and convenient location, with splendidly designed and maintained accommodation where the staff ensure that you have nothing to do but enjoy a perfect retreat.

The closest beach is Frenchman's Cove. San San Beach is a few minutes away. There are half a dozen other beaches about ten minutes away, each with their own appeal. Snorkel at Winifred Beach, swim and eat jerk pork at Boston Beach, claimed to be the home of jerk-style seasoning, go surfing at Boston Bay, ride horses in the surf, take surfing lessons, get a boat man to take you on a tour of the beaches, drop you for lunch (previously arranged) at Cynthia's lunch shack and pick you up later, go rafting down the Rio Grande, stopping this time for lunch at the famed Belinda's, climb Reach Falls (without the hundreds of tourists that crowd Dunn's River Falls), visit a coffee plantation, hike in the Blue Mountains........ and much more.

About Kay Cain, for owner J. Al Merritt

The owners have lived in Miami for many years, bringing up their children there while running a successful business that provided essential medical equipment to health institutions throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Kay Cain, for owner J. Al Merritt purchased this villa in 2004

Why Kay Cain, for owner J. Al Merritt chose Port Antonio

One spouse was born and brought up in Jamaica, in the Port Antonio area. Many family members still live there. Through frequent visits over the years, the family became committed to supporting community development efforts in Port Antonio and the surrounding parish. Learning by chance that this property was on the market, it took only one visit for them to realize that this was not only the perfect holiday residence for their own family, but also a place where many could come to find peace and renewal in the incomparable beauty and amenities of the estate, and to enjoy the huge variety of attractions that the area has to offer.

What makes this villa unique

“The property itself is arguably the best endowed in Port Antonio.” wrote Oliver Hill, a travel writer, in 2010. A luxury estate with all the features of Norse Hill, with its lush acreage of carefully maintained tropical gardens, interspersed with exploration trails, could be a destination in itself. There is certainly no equal to it in the area and there are probably few estates in the Caribbean with such a large acreage combined with a villa of such unique features. Large villas along the coast are usually cheek by jowl with other large villas. Not so with this property. You may need to enlist the help of the gardeners to find the children as they explore the gardens! The security of the property, as well as the very low crime rate in the parish, means that you can let them roam in safety. The estate is actually within the prestigious San San Nature Reserve & Bird Sanctuary. The Norwegian shipping magnate who built the villa in the early 1960’s was a botanist. He had both local and exotic flora planted in a harmonious array to provide peaceful seclusion for his family and an environment favored by a huge number of birds and butterflies. The estate grown papaya, banana, oranges, limes and other fruit will appear each morning on your breakfast table. Between meals, the butler will bring you glasses of fresh lime juice or drinks of your choice.

The location above Port Antonio guarantees breezes for better air circulation and wonderful views, in addition to the privacy. Neighboring estates are barely visible. There is a large pool but when the beach beckons, a taxi will whisk you there in five minutes. A call on the mobile will summon the driver to return you to the villa where the chef will have your lunch ready, and the butler will be waiting to serve it.

Your only decisions will be menu planning, and deciding which of the many activities to choose each day.

One of my favorite places!

  • 5 of 5

I have travelled extensively, but none compare with the experience of Norse Hill. Upon arrival the staff greats you like a dear old friend, with welcoming smiles that make you feel at home immediately. Refreshments are waiting after a day of travel to begin enjoying the breathtaking view of the ocean from the home.

Norse Hill was perfect for entertaining a large group or family. All accommodations are ensuite with wonderful linens and tastefully decorated. Walking paths through the 8 acres of Botanical gardens are a serene way to enjoy the day. You could wander all day and see the various blooms at different times of the day. My favorite thing was waking up to the most beautiful sunset, with a great cup of coffee waiting, and relaxing on the back patio.

We went on several of the recommended excursions and none of them disappointed. The Reach Falls were incredible to climb, Frenchmen's Cove was an absolutely gorgeous beach, and rafting... All amazing day trips that are close by.

Norse Hill and it's staff didn't just meet my expectations, but went far beyond. I would recommend the Villa to the most astute traveller. The week I spent at Norse Hill will truly stand out in my fondest of memories.

Owner's Response: Jenny, your comments are very useful for those trying to make a decision on a place to stay in the laid-back, Jamaica-as-it-used-to-be area of Port Antonio! The choices are many, which means that the opinion of someone who has done a lot of traveling is so helpful when trying to decide what to book. Norse Hill Estate is a place for those who want peace, privacy, the ability to enjoy an uncrowded beach without having to fend off numerous vendors, great places for excursions - and a hammock with waiting cocktail at the end of the day! We look forward to seeing you back again soon.

Hilltop Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of visiting the Norse Hill Estate in Jamaica in late February/early March 2015. The moment we stepped inside the front entrance, we knew we were in for something special. The panoramic ocean view from atop the hill was breathtaking. The lush green view from every vantage point as you looked out the back of the house was so beautiful and serene – we felt like we stepped into a dream.

The home is absolutely majestic – we loved how the breeze flowed through the grand open doors that line the back of the house. And, relaxing on the patio that sits on the edge of the hill under the massive tree is a perfect place to let your cares just drift away. (Also, the recently renovated cottage that sits adjacent to the house is an awesome addition to this fabulous property!)

If that isn’t enough, what a treat it was to have such a wonderful staff take care of us! Leston did an amazing job preparing all of the delicious meals and Wayne took care of serving us and attending to our needs. We also appreciated the excellent maid service. They are delightful people that we enjoyed meeting and having them there added to our comfortable and stress-free vacation.

We also enjoyed the many sights and adventures that Port Antonio has to offer – the raft ride down the Rio Grande River and lunch at Belinda’s along the way, the unbelievably beautiful waters in and around the Blue Lagoon and the private and idyllic beach at Frenchman’s Cove. We are thankful to Andre, our driver, for expertly transporting us all around Port Antonio!

Our stay at Norse Hill Estate was a truly memorable experience and one that we will always treasure. It is a touch of heaven nestled atop a hill in a secluded town far and away from the hustle and bustle that is rejuvenating, re-energizing and relaxing for all lucky enough to visit!

Owner's Response: Julie, thanks for giving such a comprehensive description! There are so many aspects of a Norse Hill Estate vacation and you clearly had a great deal of enjoyment from many of them. You may be sure that we will continue to ensure that our guests have the same wonderful experience that you did - and with such a gorgeous property to start with, that will be no problem, as they like to say in Jamaica. Look forward to seeing you again!

Awesome! Great break from all inclusives & cruises

  • 5 of 5

I have been to Jamaica 3 times via a cruise. Not really impress until s friend told me about Port Antonio area and the Norse Hill Estate. Very pleasant surprise and the best way to experience Jamaica, mon. The Norse Hill Estate is an awesome house that accommodated 4/5 couples with plenty of space. Everything is first class and is perfectly maintained. Views are even better than the pictures. Cocktails every night out on the patio with an ocean view & breeze. Coffee waiting for you every morning, breakfast served every with fresh fruit at a table that seats 8-10 people.

Really cool and professional manicured grounds in which you can walk around and see, various fruit trees, flowers.

The staff was awesome. They were so accommodating. What ever you wanted. What was great about the staff too along with there pleasant personalities is that you seldom would see them but was always there when you needed something.

Beautiful beaches, hiking ,rafting and lots more to do in the area. Great trip and highly recommended for families, couples looking for some adventure and great relief from the all inclusive stuff.

Norse Hill belongs in Conde` Nast!

My husband and I celebrated our 25th anniversary at Norse Hill with all 8 of our children ranging from 23-10 years of age. Simply, Norse Hill was glorious. We all had a great time and have elevated our Norse Hill experience to our best family vacation yet. There is so much to say about the property, home and staff.

Things we loved:

• The layout of the house is exceptional, especially for a large group. We can tell that great thought and attention was paid to the design and its layout. We loved the master bedroom doors leading to the balconies. While air conditioning was available, we choose to listen to the wildlife symphony each night and early morning. The breeze we experienced was exquisite.

• The gardens and property were beautifully kept up.

• The assortment of books was great as was the over-sized backgammon game.

• The house staff was ideal. Lestin, Wayne and Rose did a wonderful job of caring for our needs. It was the first time we have had the great pleasure of experiencing house staff while on vacation. I am hard pressed to vacation without house staff ever again.

• Frontgate furniture was beautiful and perfect for relaxation and reading under the fig tree.

• It was a great help to have Dude, our driver, available at a moment’s notice to drive us around town. He has a great, heartwarming personality and smile to match. Dude was always early for each drive, which I found comforting, particularly driving to the airport twice.

• Cell phone available for use while at Norse Hill was very convenient and helpful.

Chef Lestin was exceptional. Each morning we were served fresh fruit, cereal, bacon, eggs, toast and juice. We are big bacon and egg eaters so this was a perfect fit. The following items were favorites for all of us: Pumpkin soup and red bean soup, green salad served at lunch and dinner, pasta and meat sauce, lasagna, Jamaican curry chicken and rice. Simply delicious!

Some nice touches:

• White plush bath towels in every bathroom.

• Rum drinks served when we arrived on our first day.

• Bathrobe in master bathroom.

• 5 gallon Water cooler in the family room

• Sunscreen/bug spray by the front door

• Staff on hand upon arriving and departing.

The Merritts are very gracious to share their piece of heaven on earth. I feel blessed that we found Norse Hill. We will certainly be back. Our children insist!

Owner's Response: Maritza, you have written a review that is both an excellent analysis as well as a wonderful description of the important features of Norse Hill Estate. Our team works hard to give guests a magical vacation experience that they will never forget. They will welcome you back with wider smiles than ever - and we will have that bottle of sparkly stuff waiting for you next time, as a post-25th anniversary celebration! It was helpful to know which of the chef's creations you enjoyed. We have been trying to select one or two "signature" Norse Hill dishes so that we can put the recipes on our website, but guests tell us it is too hard to pick just one or two! Check for the final selection - coming soon.

An ethereal piece of paradise

My husband and I rented the property for a week for our family and best friends to stay in, while we also used it for our intimate destination wedding. We knew the moment we saw Norse Hill from only the photos alone that it would be the place for us to wed, however as with planning any wedding, there are many initial concerns. From the very first inquiry Kay, Al and Yvonne, all who take part in management of renting the property, were extremely helpful, insightful and quite reassuring with utmost professionalism. They took no time in responding to any questions, thoughts, or concerns we had which made us feel at ease. Kay even contacted us right up before we left just to be reassuring and see if there was anything else we needed.

We arrived before our guests to see the property, and It was truly breathtaking. To be married in such a place, in such splendor, was awe inspiring; I couldn't concentrate at the moment on the business at hand. I almost felt regret that we were to be staying at a neighboring property (which we chose for privacy away from our guests although NH offers such.) The home is a bit dated, which imo only adds to the character to the very well kept property. The entire exterior and interior from the driveway to the sea is a beautiful utopia that lends itself to the cool tradewinds and fresh mountain air. I could happily spend the rest of my days there.

The staff was very accommodating in providing snacks for the bridal party and vendors the day of the wedding. We also had an additional family dinner during the remainder of our stay after the wedding in which they set up the mid-century modern dining furniture out on the property. The meal was delicious and I'll never have another pineapple upside down cake like I did lest I return. ;)

Yvonne helped us arrange an outing to do the down river bamboo raft tour (request BELINDAS for lunch) as well as some airport transfers at extremely reasonable rates. We were also given a property tour of the gardens by the keeper of 45 years who showed us various ferns, lillies, orchids, spices and fruits, some of which we were able to taste.

The neighborhood location is very safe and secure. In the evening we would walk down the hill and back from the Bushbar (flashlight advised.) This part of Portland as a whole, as I have found on my few trips there, is quite safe. During my last stay, it really began to almost feel like home.

Nobody wanted to leave, but we anticipate our return.

Owner's Response: Well, what can we say in response to such a review? It was a great experience for all of us to be able to share in the joy of this wedding, and a pleasure to work with this couple. Rest assured, we and all the staff at Norse Hill Estate are eagerly looking forward to having you back to celebrate anniversaries! And next time you return, there will be no need to go elsewhere for that special, private place because there will be a renovated cottage in the grounds of Norse Hill that will be a gem of convenient design, comfort, elegance and privacy for couples or individuals who love to have family vacations but need a little time to themselves as well. It is under construction now, ready early in 2015. Welcome back to you both!

The most amazing place in the world!

Norse Hill is the largest estate in the peaceful town of Port Antonio. No noisy hordes of tourists; just a laid-back pace of life where friendly locals will cheerfully greet you or give you directions, instead of pushing tawdry imported souvenirs. Port Antonio is on the northeastern coast of Jamaica, about 60 miles (100 km) from Kingston. It is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation in every color of green punctuated by brilliant scarlet or neon yellow flowers. It has been through many phases of history since Christopher Columbus arrived in 1494. Those silky white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters were so appealing, he returned four times! But today this part of Jamaica is still an almost secret place, off the beaten track yet easily reached from Kingston or Montego Bay.

The clear ocean waters are perfect for snorkeling, scuba or surfing. If you have never experienced riding a horse at the edge of the ocean, don't miss it during your stay at Norse Hill Estate! Tennis and golf, rafting down the Rio Grande, hiking in the mountains, visiting coffee plantations, enjoying the original jerk pork at Boston Beach ….. our local manager will arrange transportation for all your excursions and the staff will pack a picnic lunch if you’ll be gone all day. Check through our reviews to see what previous guests have enjoyed most.
