Not our best rental experience

We stayed at this house, managed by Rental and Resort Management Inc on Feb 21-26 2011. The house was OK, but about a month after we returned home we were surprised to receive a letter from the management company stating that our security deposit would not be returned because of damage to the garage door trim and a small "winter watchman" electronic device in the home. We did not cause the damage. The letter was dated 28 March, 30 days after we left. After several communications from us to the management company, which included "good faith" offers of settlement for a portion of the security deposit, the company stopped responding and ultimately referred us to their attorney. The bottom line is that we paid for damage done by someone else. So, if you decide to stay here or another property managed by this company, our recommendation is to thoroughly video the house inside and out when you arrive and again before you leave. Our group has been renting properties for skiing in the winter for the last nine years and this is the first problem we have had with a rental company.
Regarding the property itself, we only noted two problems: 1. drafty doors leading from the living/dining area out to the rear deck, and 2. an odd smell in the kitchen/dining area, apparently from the heating system, which gradually diminished during our stay. We didn't consider either problem significant enough to report. The house is roughly a 20 minute drive from Nub's Nob and Boyne Highlands, and is relatively isolated with wide open views of the adjacent golf course and field. Interior decor is fine but not remarkable.
Owner's Response: It is most unfortunate our guests have elected to respond in the manner. However, it certainly is their right.
It should be noted, it is the policy of Resort Rental and Management to carefully inspect each property pre/post of each guests stay. It was upon departure inspection the damage was identified. Pictures of the damage were taken and communicated to the individual who made the original reservation. After several communications and the guests not taking ownership of the damage, they were asked to speak directly with our attorney. This reservation has been a challenge from the beginning as the original deposit check came back as insufficient funds. However, it was made good after notice was provided.
As for the distance to the ski areas, it will take 20 minutes if one travels via the city of Harbor Springs. However, very clean directions are provided traveling the “back way” on very good roads. Directions are provided to all guests.
As to the damaged caused, it was repaired within two days of identifying the issues. This lovely home is located on two lots in Birchwood Farms Golf and Country Club. It is on the fourth hole of the Farms course. As one can imagine, there are many homes along the fairway. The home offers two great rooms, five bedrooms, kitchen with granite counter tops, wet bar & game table in lower level great room plus much more. We are proud to represent this property.
