Watch the Surfers from Your Lanai - Kona Reef Ocean Front Unit

Recently updated.

Light and Airy with direct Ocean Views from the Lanai, Living and Kitchen areas. Large Ocean Front 611 square foot condo with a full 128 square foot Lanai.

This fully equipped Ocean Front 3rd floor condo is located in the low-rise popular Kona Reef complex. Just steps to the Ocean and the white sand beach park next door. It has a short 3 minute walk to shops, open markets and restaurants in the picturesque town of Kailua-Kona. There is free parking for renters (both open or covered), elevators, air conditioning and secured DSL internet access (WIFI).

The Kona Reef complex offers an Oceanfront Salt Water Pool, Jacuzzi / Hot Tub, Gas Grills and Pool Side Dining area.

Note to our repeat guests: Thanks to your suggestions, we've updated a number of features in our unit. We now have a new queen sleeper sofa, reclining lounge chairs for both the lanai and living room, a security screen door to allow for easy enjoyment of the ocean breeze, and new pictures and other decorations. We’ve also gone through the unit and replaced anything that appeared to be getting older or worn such as the refrigerator, laundry center, shower head, lamps, and even the kitchen sink. We hope you’ll appreciate the new look and feel of our Ocean Front Condo.

Please note we have a 5 night minimum rental requirement. We do allow exceptions on a case-by-case basis to fill small openings between existing rentals (which is why the VRBO setting needed to be set at a 1 day minimum).

Bruce & Karrie Ahrendt..

Currently living in Salem, Oregon where Bruce retired from the BLM and Karrie from the State of Oregon. We're both very involved with activities at church and in the building and now operation of a Community Hall in South Salem.

Karrie is originally from Mililani, Hi on the island of Oahu. After 30+ years she's slowly making her way back to Hawaii.

Bruce Ahrendt purchased this condo in 2009

We chose the Big Island for it's more relaxed/laid back atmosphere, not to mention the many activities available on the Big Island.

Kona Reef Condos was the logical choice for a vacation rental location. Easy access to the entire Big Island as well as easy walking distance to downtown Kailua, Kona (it's shops, restaurants and Farmer's Market), as well as the beaches and other activities along Alii Drive.

Kona Reef complex comes with a well maintained Jacuzzi and salt water swimming pool, gas grills and a central outdoor dining area with free wifi.

Our unit is located right on the ocean front. The lanai lets you enjoy relaxing or eating while watching the surfers, sea turtles, whales and spinner dolphins or possibly just a front row seat for the Hawaiian sunset.

We try and make our place feel a bit more like a home than just someplace you would rent to stay in. We provide those little extras like snorkle gear, a cooler, beach chairs, beach umbrella, sunscreen, boogie boards, even a pair of binoculars to get a better view of the ships as they sail past. For those needing internet access we have a private, secured wifi router for use inside our unit or on the lanai.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Kona Reef. The condo had absolutely everything we needed. It was really well stocked and even had a little table top Christmas Tree! The BBQ area by the pool is spic and span and the grills are always clean! You can walk to town and the Marina easily. An open market is right in town where you can buy anything you need.

Perfect Location

We arrived to a condo that had not been cleaned from the previous rental (due to a schedule miscommunication apparently). But we notified the owner and Bruce engaged right away with the property manager and the issue was handled very quickly, and Bruce also made it right by refunding our cleaning fee. So consider this a positive aspect to renting this place -- the response if something isn't right.

After that, all I can say is that this condo is in the perfect location. We were here for the Ironman World Championship and it's just far enough from the craziness, but close enough to walk down to Lava Java for a cup of the world's greatest coffee. It's about 20 minutes walking (with small kids) to the pier...not bad at all. The Ironman run course goes right in front of the complex. As for Big Island activities, you're in the prime location of the prime spot, Kailua-Kona. There are 2 great swimming/snorkeling beaches 2-3 miles down the road. We snorkeled with manta rays in Keahou Bay, just in front of the Sheraton. The Saddle Road to Hilo or the highway to the volcano are within easy access, and coffee farms are just down the road too. We went out to
Waikaloa a couple times for dinner and a beach, but Kona is the place you want to be.

As for the unit itself, there was plenty of space for 2 adults and 2 small kids, and we never once ate inside -- always on the lanai. I think if we wanted to we could spend all day sitting on the lanai watching swimmers, surfers, bodyboarders, boats, cruise ships, and perfect sunsets. Oh, and on several occasions a turtle would come into the tide pool right in front of the condo for feeding, such that we could go stand next to it and watch it eat urchins. Many units in the Kona Reef don't necessarily have ocean views, so you're getting a premier location in the complex.

Great Ocean View

We rented this unit through VRBO. Bruce, the owner, was very helpful and provided all the information needed without us having to ask. The people at Kona Reef were also friendly and were more than happy to answer our questions about the Kona Reef complex and local attractions. The condo was just as advertised and the pictures on the VRBO web site were very accurate. The unit came fully stocked with all the needed paper goods for the time we were there. Swim gear (boogie board, snorkeling gear, towels) were also provided. The lanai over looks the ocean and we especially enjoyed sitting out there, having breakfast and watching the surfers and the occasional sea turtle. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan to rent this unit again.

Wonderful time at the Kona Reef!

We just returned from a two week trip for our 35th wedding anniversary where we stayed in two different condos. The first week was spent at Bruce and Karrie's Kona Reef condo. The condo was clean and well-stocked, which we appreciated even more after arriving at our condo on Maui and finding it fairly limited in supplies. A-26 was very well stocked and I liked that there were some things left from previous renters (interesting jams, some coconut syrup, etc...). The AC worked great and kept the entire unit cool, along with the ceiling fans. We love our AC, but actually had to do without one night due to a power outage all through Kailua-Kona. The unit actually was quite pleasant, even without the AC. The bed and couch were very comfortable. Everything in the kitchen worked great and the washer and dryer worked really well for a stackable pair. There were 6 beach towels, which was great and a large pile of nice extra towels in the closet. It was great to have the safe in the closet as well. The view from this unit is incredible and we so enjoyed eating out there on the lanai. It is very private, as you are on the 3rd floor and we found the unit to be very quiet and peaceful. It is difficult to hear anything other than the wonderful surf. A few thoughts for improvement: adding 1 other comfortable place to sit in the living room, a couple of lounge chairs for the lanai, and maybe updating a little. But everything was cared for, comfortable and clean- just not fancy...
All in all, we had a wonderful time and a great experience renting from Bruce and Karrie. They were very kind and flexible with us and that was very appreciated.
The Kona Reef complex is incredibly well cared for. There are 4 grills, which are maintained to perfection. Each day they are made to look new again! We loved the pool and hot tub and the chairs out by the ocean were great at sunset and in the mornings. We usually bought food and ate in the condo because it was so easy to grill and enjoy the view from there. But we did walk down to Huggos on the Beach one night and really enjoyed our drinks and meals there. We also ate breakfast at Bongos and that was very good as well. I would highly recommend doing the manta ray night snorkel- we went with Captain Jack's and they were fine. It was an amazing experience! We enjoyed snorkeling at Kahalu'u beach, although it can be crowded and getting there early is important

Car: recommended

One of the best snorkeling beaches on the island is only a few miles south of Kona Reef. KaHalu’u Beach Park lets you get up close and personal with the Green Sea Turtles (protected don’t touch) and a large variety of tropical fish.

Some of our favorite places to go are:

• Kona Farmers' market - downtown Kona, Wed – Sun.

• Hilo Farmers' market - Wed., & Sat. only

• Akaka Falls near Hilo

• Waipio Valley (need 4 wheel drive if you actually go down into the valley – nice overlook for those like me that go for the view)

• Volcano National Park

• Hapuna Beach Park & many other beautiful beaches

• Several Kona Coffee Plantations, if you enjoy coffee

• Macademian nut farms

• Waikaloa Village shopping center

• South Point, the southernmost point in the US

• There are several historical sites on Alii Street alone

For eateries:

• Bite Me for fresh Seafood

• Costco, lots of local food items

• Kona Inn Restaurant

• Huggo's

• Volcano House

• Mrs. Barry's Kona Cookies

My favorite activity is to pick up some good steak or seafood, grill it on the gas grills located near the pool at Kona Reef and sit back and eat on the Lanai of our unit, relaxing and watching the waves, surfers, boats, dolphins and other marine life.
