Watch the Surfers from Your Lanai - Kona Reef Ocean Front Unit

Recently updated.

Light and Airy with direct Ocean Views from the Lanai, Living and Kitchen areas. Large Ocean Front 611 square foot condo with a full 128 square foot Lanai.

This fully equipped Ocean Front 3rd floor condo is located in the low-rise popular Kona Reef complex. Just steps to the Ocean and the white sand beach park next door. It has a short 3 minute walk to shops, open markets and restaurants in the picturesque town of Kailua-Kona. There is free parking for renters (both open or covered), elevators, air conditioning and secured DSL internet access (WIFI).

The Kona Reef complex offers an Oceanfront Salt Water Pool, Jacuzzi / Hot Tub, Gas Grills and Pool Side Dining area.

Note to our repeat guests: Thanks to your suggestions, we've updated a number of features in our unit. We now have a new queen sleeper sofa, reclining lounge chairs for both the lanai and living room, a security screen door to allow for easy enjoyment of the ocean breeze, and new pictures and other decorations. We’ve also gone through the unit and replaced anything that appeared to be getting older or worn such as the refrigerator, dishwasher, laundry center, shower head, lamps, and even the kitchen sink. We hope you’ll appreciate the new look and feel of our Ocean Front Condo.

Please note we have a 5 night minimum rental requirement. We do allow exceptions on a case-by-case basis to fill small openings between existing rentals (which is why the VRBO setting needed to be set down to a 2 day minimum).

Bruce & Karrie Ahrendt..

Currently living in Salem, Oregon where Bruce retired from the BLM and Karrie from the State of Oregon. We're both very involved with activities at church and in the building and now operation of a Community Hall in South Salem.

Karrie is originally from Mililani, Hi on the island of Oahu. After 30+ years she's slowly making her way back to Hawaii.

Bruce Ahrendt purchased this condo in 2009

We chose the Big Island for it's more relaxed/laid back atmosphere, not to mention the many activities available on the Big Island.

Kona Reef Condos was the logical choice for a vacation rental location. Easy access to the entire Big Island as well as easy walking distance to downtown Kailua, Kona (it's shops, restaurants and Farmer's Market), as well as the beaches and other activities along Alii Drive.

Kona Reef complex comes with a well maintained Jacuzzi and salt water swimming pool, gas grills and a central outdoor dining area with free wifi.

Our unit is located right on the ocean front. The lanai lets you enjoy relaxing or eating while watching the surfers, sea turtles, whales and spinner dolphins or possibly just a front row seat for the Hawaiian sunset.

We try and make our place feel a bit more like a home than just someplace you would rent to stay in. We provide those little extras like snorkle gear, a cooler, beach chairs, beach umbrella, sunscreen, boogie boards, even a pair of binoculars to get a better view of the ships as they sail past. For those needing internet access we have a private, secured wifi router for use inside our unit or on the lanai.

Last minute getaway

  • 5 of 5
When my vacation plans for August fell through, I decided to not let it ruin my holiday and went online to find a cheap flight to Hawaii. Then on to finding a place to stay. I emailed Bruce on Friday afternoon and by Friday night I was booked and ready to go! I arrived on Monday to this beautiful ocean front condo. I was informed that the dishwasher was not working, which was kind of disappointing because who wants to do dishes on vacation, but while I was out exploring the next morning they came in with a brand new one so there was no hassle at all.
The view is breathtaking! When it says oceanfront, they mean oceanfront! The lanai was by far one of my favorite places to sit and watch the locals, tourists, turtles, dolphins and much more. Pool was clean and relaxing, BBQ were high quality and never a wait to use them. When I got back home, the refund on the security deposit was completed promptly. Overall the condo was a great home base to explore the Big Island and when I come back, I will be booking here again for sure! Mahalo:)

You name it, this rental has it all!!

  • 5 of 5
You want a well stocked kitchen? You want all the equipment for water sports and beach visits? You want a view from your lanai that is better than any restaurant? You want a fully eqipped, updated, fully furnished condo? You want a great pool and BBQ's as well as a glorious front lawn area? You have it all at this place. Nothing was missing, and we were there for almost 6 weeks. The owners take personal pride in the upkeep, and the property manager is right there to help you. With the centre of Kona only a 10 minute walk, you can see and do so much even without a car. The turtles are munching away right below your lanai; the dolphins are spinning across the bay; and surfers right in front, so you don't even really have to move if you don't want to (except to cook the food on the BBQ). This really is the perfect place to enjoy the holiday that can be busy or relaxing. The loudest noise of all is the glorious surf outside your window.

Breath-taking view! You won't want to leave the condo!

This was my husand's and my sixth trip to Hawaii and our best VRBO experience yet. This condo was lovely. Extremely clean, well-equipped kitchen. They have thought of almost everything you might need. Some condiments and spices as well as paper goods were available. They have thought of almost everything you might need. Laundry detergent, bath soap and shampoo even supplied. Living room and lanai both have a reclining chair -- not easy to find. The location was fantastic. Very close to downtown Kailua-Kona - less than a 10 minute walk. You could walk to dinner and not worry about driving home. The best part was the million-dollar view! The condo is on the third floor so you have a wonderful view out over the water. The view is unobstructed -- no palm foilage in your view. The whales were amazingly active. We didn't even need the binoculars to see them. A real treat! You wake to seeing the sunlight illuminate the water allowing you to see the gold fish as the waves turn. And the sunsets from the lanai are a real treat. There was always something to watch -- surfers, paddleboarders, swimmers, whales, turtles, dolphins, jumping fish, boats, cruise ships, and more. Morning coffee and evening cocktails were enjoyed each day on the lanai. It didn't get any better than that! We looked down from the lanai almost daily and watched the turtles in the pools below. There is a bin on the lanai with all kinds of water aids and toys. Very thoughtfully stocked. The sounds of the birds in the morning through the bedroom window were heavenly. The grounds are kept up and are clean. Extremely prompt in returning security deposit. Would highly recommend this unit! Will definately rent this again on our next trip to Kona.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Kona Reef. The condo had absolutely everything we needed. It was really well stocked and even had a little table top Christmas Tree! The BBQ area by the pool is spic and span and the grills are always clean! You can walk to town and the Marina easily. An open market is right in town where you can buy anything you need.

Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5
We arrived to a condo that had not been cleaned from the previous rental (due to a schedule miscommunication apparently). But we notified the owner and Bruce engaged right away with the property manager and the issue was handled very quickly, and Bruce also made it right by refunding our cleaning fee. So consider this a positive aspect to renting this place -- the response if something isn't right.

After that, all I can say is that this condo is in the perfect location. We were here for the Ironman World Championship and it's just far enough from the craziness, but close enough to walk down to Lava Java for a cup of the world's greatest coffee. It's about 20 minutes walking (with small kids) to the pier...not bad at all. The Ironman run course goes right in front of the complex. As for Big Island activities, you're in the prime location of the prime spot, Kailua-Kona. There are 2 great swimming/snorkeling beaches 2-3 miles down the road. We snorkeled with manta rays in Keahou Bay, just in front of the Sheraton. The Saddle Road to Hilo or the highway to the volcano are within easy access, and coffee farms are just down the road too. We went out to
Waikaloa a couple times for dinner and a beach, but Kona is the place you want to be.

As for the unit itself, there was plenty of space for 2 adults and 2 small kids, and we never once ate inside -- always on the lanai. I think if we wanted to we could spend all day sitting on the lanai watching swimmers, surfers, bodyboarders, boats, cruise ships, and perfect sunsets. Oh, and on several occasions a turtle would come into the tide pool right in front of the condo for feeding, such that we could go stand next to it and watch it eat urchins. Many units in the Kona Reef don't necessarily have ocean views, so you're getting a premier location in the complex.

Car: recommended

One of the best snorkeling beaches on the island is only a few miles south of Kona Reef. KaHalu’u Beach Park lets you get up close and personal with the Green Sea Turtles (protected don’t touch) and a large variety of tropical fish.

Some of our favorite places to go are:

• Kona Farmers' market - downtown Kona, Wed – Sun.

• Hilo Farmers' market - Wed., & Sat. only

• Akaka Falls near Hilo

• Waipio Valley (need 4 wheel drive if you actually go down into the valley – nice overlook for those like me that go for the view)

• Volcano National Park

• Hapuna Beach Park & many other beautiful beaches

• Several Kona Coffee Plantations, if you enjoy coffee

• Macademian nut farms

• Waikaloa Village shopping center

• South Point, the southernmost point in the US

• There are several historical sites on Alii Street alone

For eateries:

• Bite Me for fresh Seafood

• Costco, lots of local food items

• Kona Inn Restaurant

• Huggo's

• Volcano House

• Mrs. Barry's Kona Cookies

My favorite activity is to pick up some good steak or seafood, grill it on the gas grills located near the pool at Kona Reef and sit back and eat on the Lanai of our unit, relaxing and watching the waves, surfers, boats, dolphins and other marine life.
