Notes: Remote, private, steep half-mile road requires 4WD or AWD for 3-season access (only accessible via snowshoe or snowmobile in winter). All utilities off the grid: Propane powers plumbed-in lights, fridge, hot water, heat. Water system employs a 110 gallon, food-grade cistern tank in the building kneewall, which needs to be replenished every few days or so, by a gas-powered generator to pump water from the well directly into the tank. The process takes about 20 minutes. A solar-powered RV pump keeps the interior water lines pressurized between replenishments.

A Quiet, Comfortable Cabin

Review Submitted: July 14, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
My family just spent a wonderful week at this cabin in the North East Kingdom of Vermont. Several highlights stand out about the charming, comfortable Standish cottage. First, you would have a hard time finding a place that offers this much privacy and serenity. You will enjoy the the quiet surroundings and amazing mountainous views. Second, even summer nights can be cool in Vermont, and the cabin is outfitted with a sturdy heater in the living room and the gas lights also seemingly provide some heat. Speaking of nights, I have NEVER seen as many stars in the sky as I did during our stay. You will be utterly mesmerized. Warm during the day? Open the conveniently screened windows and enjoy the fresh Vermont breeze.

While we've never experienced gas lighting or an "off the grid" home before, we quickly and easily acclimated to this style of living and feel confident that you will too. The well stocked kitchen had all the plates, glassware, silverware and cookware that you could possibly need. There was plenty of hot water in the fully functional bathroom, and the fridge kept all our fresh food perfectly cold. A nice stock of board games helped foster some great family time in the evenings. The drive up the road to the house is steep but fairly easy in the summer, and we were glad to have an all wheel drive vehicle to make this trek even easier. The town of Barton is mere minutes away, and features the C&C, a full service grocery store. Be sure to stop by the charming drug store cafe in town and enjoy some of the best tasting soft serve ice cream around.

Finally, there are two major aspects to a successful stay in any home away from home: The property itself, and those that own the property. I can't speak highly enough of the excellent communication I had with the owner, who was always available for questions/coordination prior to our stay and personally guided us through the property on the first day of our visit. If you are considering a stay at this cabin, I definitely encourage you to do so. You will be in good hands.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind words. Something about our cabin seems to attract the most delightful people: We have been blessed by families like this and groups like the others who have reviewed here. I only hope our good fortune continues and new renters are able to appreciate the unique experience of the cabin, property and surrounds.

exciting ice fishing trip in the winter

Review Submitted: March 1, 2011 Date of Stay: February 2011
We choose to live at that extraordinary place for a weekend trip in February to do ice fishing in the lakes nearby. For this we wanted to be away from all and experience nature without any touch of human beings. It turned out that the Standish cottage was exactly the right thing. It is the only house at a top of a mountain and in which direction you ever go from there, you will make the first footprints in the snow. Outside the cottage it is a place of absolute quietness and wonderful views. Inside it is extremely cozy with gas lights, rustic furniture and a central powerful gas heater. We also enjoyed the fully functional bathroom and well equiped kitchen. We would not recommend this place for people who need a TV or close restaurants to not being bored. Also some physical fitness is needed to walk up there by snow shoes in the winter (summer you can drive).
The very friendly owner also took a lot care that all important equipments of the house (heater, warm water, gas tank) work properly at the day we arrived.

We highly recommend the cottage for an exciting trip in all seasons, It must be an even more beautyful place and easy to access in the summer, spring and fall.

Owner's Response: This was a truly international group of ice fishermen, hailing from all over the world, with varying experience in the sport. The uniting bonds seemed to be a deep appreciation for an unspoiled mountain experience and a comaraderie from shared scientific pursuit. I believe this group was especially able to appreciate what we had to offer, both in location and amenities, and we would welcome them again.

Standish Cottage

Review Submitted: September 30, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
After spending numerous vacations in Central Vermont, I decided to take my family to North East Vermont, and quite specifically to the North East Kingdom. We were on the look out for a rugged cottage, that was a bit off the road and off the grid as well, but with essential amenities. And we were in for a pleasant surprise at the Standish Cottage! The Standish property is vast (106 acres) and completely private with a spectacular view of the 3 main mountains in the region: the Wheeler Mountain, Mount Hor and the Burke mountain. These mountains are visible from the bedroom window downstairs and it can be quite an experience to wake up in the morning to the sight of these 3 beauties! There is also a private pond and one can a take a dip there if one likes, or one can head out to the Lake Willoughby or even the Crystal Lake, and they are not very far away either (about 20 mins drive to either one). There are dozens of trails around the property and one can easily spend the whole day hiking. In fact the fantastic location of this property is one of the main reasons why I would love to return here next summer. The town of Barton is about 5 miles away so grocery shopping is not inconvenient either, if one decides to spend a longer vacation here.

In all the Standish cottage is a great place in the North east Kingdom to have a lovely, private vacation with a choice of various activities to do.

Owner's Response: Marja and her family were excellent guests with a conscientious concern for the cabin and surrounds. We would certainly welcome them again and were grateful that they appreciated the cabin and experience as much as they did.
