A One of A Kind Romantic Getaway

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I were in need of a bit of seclusion and serenity. We both love the outdoors and all it has to offer. The cabin and it's surrounding wilderness offered exactly what we were searching for. After hiking Mt. Wheeler, wandering through the silence of the woods and taking in the breathtaking natural beauty of the nearby pond and lake we both felt a deep sense of tranquility. This feeling was further enhanced by the serenity of finding a spot in the woods and simply allowing your senses to take in what they will.

The rejuvenating effect of our stay was much more than we could have hoped for ! I would encourage anyone in search of true solitude with all the creature comforts to venture off the beaten path and plan a stay at the cabin. The experiences you create will be forever imprinted on your soul!

Owner's Response: My wife and I appreciate how the description of your shared experience at the cabin and surrounds parallels ours. I am so pleased that you and Jim found all you did there. Since Jim had previously rented the cabin during bird hunting season, I knew that he had an affinity for what we have to offer. I am so glad you share that affinity. Welcome back.

Great retreat

  • 5 of 5
My family, including young children, spent a relaxing week at the cabin this summer. It was a great location - very private and quiet. Go here if you're looking to relax and disconnect. My family and I paddled around the pond at the base of the driveway, hiked excellent nearby trails, swam at Crystal Lake, and got pizza at Parker Pie. At night we watched the sun go down on Wheeler mountain from the screened-in porch or cooked marshmallows on the open fire pit. Once the kids went to bed, we read by the light from the propane fixtures. It was a manageable adventure living without electricity, although the propane hot water, refrigerator, heat, and lights made us forget it wasn't there. We had no trouble on the steep driveway with our AWD Volvo. Filling the water tank every other day was easy and part of the adventure. Owners were accommodating and responsive.

Owner's Response: I knew Mark and family would do well at the cabin by the questions he posed before renting. I suspected that they would appreciate the off-the-grid isolation and adventure. I am pleased to see that, once again, the ad description, images and reviews served to connect the right family with the type of experience they would enjoy.

The very best of Vermont

  • 5 of 5
Recently spent one week at this mountaintop home, simply breathtaking. Clean, comfortable, off the grid for those that like to be away from it all. The views are just stunning, just like a postcard. Owner is very friendly and went out of the way to explain how to operate everything { which I will add are very simple }. One of the most beautiful sunrises I've ever seen and on a full moon the surrounding mountains have an amazing glow at night. This is the perfect place for peace, solitude, and getting rid of everyday stresses in the mainstream. HIGHLY recommend!!

Owner's Response: We have been incredibly fortunate to have renters like Jim, who truly appreciate what our cabin on the hill offers. Somehow, we've been consistently blessed with the people who adapt well to the off-the-grid experience and appreciate the beauty and solitude of the location. Jim, his friends and family are welcome back anytime.

A Piece of Heaven

  • 5 of 5
I am a painter and a writer, and was looking for a place that would offer the peace and quiet I was looking for. The Standish cabin met my needs to a tee! The view of Wheeler mountain from the cabin is breathtaking, and I enjoyed many days just enjoying the views from the screened in porch. The fire road that leads up to the cabin requires 4 wheel drive but wasnt too difficult to manage. Every morning I heard the loons call from Wheeler Pond below, and had the opportunity to hike the nearby trails around the property. The town of Barton has a nice grocery store, and some nifty antique shops to poke around in. My husband came up toward the end of the week, and we made some trips to Lake Willoughby, and West Glover to Parker Pie, which has the best pizza I've ever tasted!
As the cabin is off grid, the owner met me upon arrival and showed me how to keep things up and running which is quite easy. Any questions I had, he was more than happy to answer. The cabin itself was inviting, and I would highly recommend it for anyone who loves being surrounded by the beauty of the Northeast Kingdom, and is looking for a tranquil get away.

Owner's Response: I hope someday to see and read what may have been created while this guest enjoyed our remote location. At first, I was somewhat reticent to rent to single person who intended to experience this off-the-grid wilderness alone. I soon learned of Laurel's independent, pioneer spirit and familiarity with the wilderness of the Northeast Kingdom. She was the ideal guest for this remote experience. We continue to be blessed with the most suitable people to appreciate what our location was designed to offer. Thanks for knowing what you would find from the description in our advertisement. We hope you come back again, Laurel.

Wonderful, secluded spot

  • 5 of 5
Stunningly beautiful remote cabin in the NE kingdom. I stayed at the cabin for a little less than a week early this summer with seven buddies. We swam and cliff jumped at lake Willoughby, ate delicious food, went trail running on Mt Pisgah and sat around a campfire every night. The views are absolutely stunning and the word "cabin" doesn't really do the place justice. it slept 8 very comfortably. The whole house is off the grid (almost all appliances run on propane) which adds some more work and concentration but is completely worth it for the seclusion this allows you. This would be a great place for a couple getaway, a young family or a group of friends. It isn't for everybody, however. The driveway is about 0.8 of a mile and demands all wheel drive. My friend was driving a subaru outback sedan and made it up about a quarter of the way before backsliding back to the road (he didn't have great tires). I was driving a Volvo XC70 and bottomed out once but made it up and down without any problems. You can get into town in about 15 mins but you should stay here if you are looking for nature and seclusion (not proximity to town). The woods around the house are new growth and thickly wooded so they aren't great for hiking and exploring but there are many excellent hikes within a 30 min drive.

Owner's Response: It seems as though the ad for our property attracts just the sort of people who will appreciate the experience there. We must be saying and showing the right things to the right people. We're glad that Andrew and his group were able to avail themselves of a few of the many attractions and experiences to be had in near proximity. We have also had a Subaru Outback make the grade before, but, the road is definitely for 4WD and AWD vehicles with reasonable ground clearance. Once one gets the "hang" of how to approach the water bars, which are built in to prevent road erosion, bottoming out shouldn't be a problem for XC70's, XC90's and nearly any SUV. Andrew and his crew are welcome back any time.

A Quiet, Comfortable Cabin

  • 5 of 5
My family just spent a wonderful week at this cabin in the North East Kingdom of Vermont. Several highlights stand out about the charming, comfortable Standish cottage. First, you would have a hard time finding a place that offers this much privacy and serenity. You will enjoy the the quiet surroundings and amazing mountainous views. Second, even summer nights can be cool in Vermont, and the cabin is outfitted with a sturdy heater in the living room and the gas lights also seemingly provide some heat. Speaking of nights, I have NEVER seen as many stars in the sky as I did during our stay. You will be utterly mesmerized. Warm during the day? Open the conveniently screened windows and enjoy the fresh Vermont breeze.

While we've never experienced gas lighting or an "off the grid" home before, we quickly and easily acclimated to this style of living and feel confident that you will too. The well stocked kitchen had all the plates, glassware, silverware and cookware that you could possibly need. There was plenty of hot water in the fully functional bathroom, and the fridge kept all our fresh food perfectly cold. A nice stock of board games helped foster some great family time in the evenings. The drive up the road to the house is steep but fairly easy in the summer, and we were glad to have an all wheel drive vehicle to make this trek even easier. The town of Barton is mere minutes away, and features the C&C, a full service grocery store. Be sure to stop by the charming drug store cafe in town and enjoy some of the best tasting soft serve ice cream around.

Finally, there are two major aspects to a successful stay in any home away from home: The property itself, and those that own the property. I can't speak highly enough of the excellent communication I had with the owner, who was always available for questions/coordination prior to our stay and personally guided us through the property on the first day of our visit. If you are considering a stay at this cabin, I definitely encourage you to do so. You will be in good hands.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind words. Something about our cabin seems to attract the most delightful people: We have been blessed by families like this and groups like the others who have reviewed here. I only hope our good fortune continues and new renters are able to appreciate the unique experience of the cabin, property and surrounds.

Notes:
Remote, private, steep half-mile road requires 4WD or AWD for 3-season access (only accessible via snowshoe or snowmobile in winter). All utilities off the grid: Propane powers plumbed-in lights, fridge, hot water, heat. Water system employs a 110 gallon, food-grade cistern tank in the building kneewall, which needs to be replenished every few days or so, by a gas-powered generator to pump water from the well directly into the tank. The process takes about 20 minutes. A solar-powered RV pump keeps the interior water lines pressurized between replenishments.
