Delightful Condo, Beautiful Setting
This was our first trip to the Cabo area and we will most definitely be returning! The condo at El Zalate is exactly as described: a beautiful third floor location overlooking the pool and the ocean, spacious bedrooms and baths, a wonderful (large) balcony that we used extensively during our nine day occupancy (we spent a lot of time observing whale "spouts" from that location), and equipped with most of the items you need to be comfortable during your stay. We found that the kitchen was adequately stocked with dishes, glasses and cook ware and even had a rich supply of seasonings and spices for those nights when we elected to prepare a meal ourselves rather than going out.
Patty (the owner) was always responsive to our questions prior to our trip, and then again while we were occupying the condo. Our dealings with her were straight forward - which we appreciated.
While it probably isn't necessary to have a car to enjoy your time in Los Cabos, I'm certainly glad we had one. El Zalate is well located for those without a car. It is an easy walk to MEGA (a huge and well stocked supermarket), and there is a small market right up the hill from the condo for emergency runs for milk, bread, etc. There are several good restaurants that are also within walking distance including Sardina Cantina (traditional Mexican fare, reasonable prices), Deckman's (formerly Havana's) - the food at this place was fabulous, and Zipper's - a beach front restaurant that is informal, great eats, with lots of televisions for watching sports. Unfortunately, we had a very poor dining experience at the hotel next door to El Zalate - horrible service, cold food. To her credit, the manager did not charge us for the meal after we complained - but frankly there are many other choices that do a wonderful job so avoiding your closest eating option isn't much of a sacrifice.
Because we had a car we were able to do a few things that would be difficult to manage otherwise: a trip to Costco (about 18 miles away) for food and beverages, a great journey to Todos Santos with a lovely lunch in the garden at Cafe Todos Santos, and a quick trip to Cabo San Lucas (20 miles) - we didn't care for it very much, San Jose del Cabo is much nicer in our opinion. There is an estuary in San Jose del Cabo that is a couple of miles from the condo. We had a great morning there observing the migratory birds. Finally, we enjoyed the galleries found in downtown San Jose del Cabo and had a nice meal at a local hotel
