Drive right up your private driveway to this enchanting, secluded, and architecturally unique cabin. Enjoy ocean views from two separate decks, surrounded by redwoods and mountaintop ridges. The large upper deck is ideal for yoga practice; mats are provided.
Panoramic windows surround a cozy wrap-around custom-made couch, cushioned with down pillows. This is a perfect setting from which to enjoy the extensive library of books on the history of Big Sur, its hiking trails, and present culture.
Cabin includes a full bathroom with large closet, indoor toilet, and claw-foot bathtub, as well as a romantic outdoor shower. Relax in bed and gaze at the stars through the large skylight.

With plenty of light, this is the perfect setting to relax and rejuvenate. The centralized location offers the best of both worlds -- only a twenty-minute drive to the restaurants, shops, and white sand beaches of Carmel, or drive South, and experience the striking views, art galleries, and renown restaurants of Big Sur.
A perfect writer's retreat, or couple's sanctuary.
My husband and I spent 3 days at this magical retreat and it was amazing. Unlike a lot of the commercial properties in Big Sur, this cabin is tucked away in the Redwoods giving you a real sense of adventure. Plus Embree, the owner is so very helpful. She made sure we had everything we needed and felt comfortable. I would absolutely recommend this place for a couple's retreat, with a relaxation and a sense of adventure.
The outdoor shower is AMAZING. The claw foot tub, surrounded by windows looking into the forest is perfect.
I hope to go back again!
First off, thank you to the other reviewer for including the helpful tip that SUV's come in handy. We took that to heart when renting our auto, and were extremely grateful we did. Wanted to call that out for others.
Now, about the cabin! It's really lovely and secluded. The drive up is beautiful, especially if you've always been curious, like us, about the properties high up in the mountains as you've driven up or down the PCH. The redwoods are amazing, and the cabin sits atop the trees. Even though the weather was very hot the cabin stayed cool and breezy, and in the mornings we turned on the heater even. The outdoor shower was really refreshing after a day of hiking, and a soak in the tub was perfect to relax tired muscles. At night it was magical to lay in the chaise lounges on the upper deck enjoying the many stars. Even more so to keep viewing them through the skylight! Embree had great suggestions about the area, and was very friendly. Her instructions were spot on, and the tip to buy food in Carmel to stock up was a lifesaver. While the cabin isn't right off the highway or in the middle or more things (if there was such a thing in Big Sur) the drive everywhere is of course amazing. We had dinner at Big Sur Roadhouse, a breakfast at Deetjeen's, lunch at Post Ranch Inn (the last two her thoughtful suggestions) and numerous hikes in between and were so happy that we were returning to this cabin every day to really enjoy the seclusion. Our last afternoon we were delighted by the presence of two fawns at the living room window, very curious about our presence. One even came down to the main road as we were driving out the last time. It all felt pretty par for the course for such a beautiful place. Couldn't recommend more.
We could not believe our good fortune in finding Embree's Big Sur cabin. The cabin lies on the edge of a lush canyon ridge with an unrestricted view of the surrounding canyon and Pacific Ocean. The deck above the cabin is the most serene location we have ever had the pleasure of using for morning yoga, breakfast, afternoon naps, and stargazing. Embree has filled the cabin with Big Sur guides, history books, an eclectic mix of music, and every personal amenity you could dream of - from yoga mats to plush towels to a gas-burning fireplace to a fabulous outdoor shower. You can actually prepare a four-course meal in the cozy but complete kitchen. Embree's artistic eye has touched every detail in the cabin. She is also a wonderful guide to the best day trips in the region, pointing us to spectacular hiking trails and beaches and sharing the history of Big Sur and the Palo Colorado's families. We have already shared this hidden and beautiful retreat with our closest friends and hope we have a chance to return many times.
If I could pick anywhere to have a vacation home it would be Big Sur, and this is the sort of place I’d want -- a secluded but sufficiently civilized location a couple miles off the coast highway down a winding canyon road through towering redwoods and ancient ferns, past stone and beam cottages cobbled into rocky hillsides in what looks like Faerie, with a cottage all my own that feels like a treehouse. Rustic but refined by just enough amenities to make staying a pleasure: a roomy bathroom with a clawfoot tub, shelves, and excellent water pressure; a countertop kitchen for preparing light meals: comfy bedding with abundant pillows in an upper bedroom just big enough for two; art and books; a rooftop deck for stargazing; and (given my phobias) no bothersome bugs to be seen despite this being a variety of homesteaded outback. And this helps if somebody happens to snore in such cozy confines: the couch is fine for sleeping, and with earplugs you’ll hardly hear what’s happening in the lofted bed mere feet away. And if you’re new to the area and need guidance or want an occasional neighborly chat, Embree and her beautiful home are up a walkway beyond the trees, and she’s happy to help or chat. I hesitate to write this because it’s so wonderful I’d rather keep it a secret, but I’m grateful to Embree for sharing and so will do likewise.
My husband and I decided to get away to Big Sur for a few days. This was the perfect spot to land at the end of each day. We hiked over 40 miles in the four days we were there and it was lovely to have this space as a respite. Embree was a good host, helping us find the perfect spots for hikes and food nearby. I hope to return someday soon.
The cabin looked exactly as the pictures, seasoned with charm and a peaceful surrounding. What did surprise me is how to get to the cabin. The roads are quite narrow and more ideal for an SUV (which we thankfully rented during our trip there). Tucked away, it was indeed a great place to get away from it all. The only regret we have is not staying longer.
