We are an active family of four that enjoys traveling and outdoor activities. We love visiting Kona and partaking of all it has to offer. We really like the small town feel of Kona and easy going pace that Hawaii is famous for. Lots of volleyball for us as well as outrigger paddling, fishing, surfing, swimming, snorkeling, soccer...etc.
Jeff & Nikki Caufield purchased this house in 2009
We love the feel and pace of Kona. Not as urban as Oahu or Maui, so perfect for relaxing and still enjoying the best of Hawaii.
We are close to Keauhou Bay where snorkeling, outrigger paddling and volleyball can be found. Within 2 miles of downtown with lots of shopping and restaurants. Close to the airport. Perfect jumping off grounds for traveling around the Big Island.
We stayed at Kona Calm in February to escape the cold of the Canadian Prairies. We were delighted with our experience and would whole-heartedly recommend it to others.
Kona Calm is the perfect base for an active vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii. If your group enjoys exploring and outings, and needs a comfortable and spacious home to which to return, this should be your choice. Located in a quiet neighborhood it is just a very short drive away from the Kona beaches, restaurants, supermarkets and airport. Indeed, being just a few blocks away from the main highway makes getting on the road to more distant destinations just that little bit easier.
With three teenagers we wanted a property with a little space; Kona Calm gave us the luxury of four separate bedrooms. However, 10 people could be accommodated comfortably in beds, 4 on the upper floor (master bedroom, and 2 twins) and 6 on the lower floor (2 queens in one room, 1 queen in the other). With a communal area on each of the floors, this might work well for two families staying together allowing each some extra privacy. The kitchen on the upper level is well-appointed, and the wireless internet worked seamlessly, even during intensive use by our teenagers.
There is a small, very basic patio at the back of the house, with table and chairs available stored in the garage. Families with young children should note that there is a drop-off with no barrier at the edge of the patio which would pose a hazard. Due to the slope of the land towards the ocean, the patio (and the bedroom windows at the back of the house) give beautiful views of the ocean. We watched the sunset, a cruise ship anchored in the harbor, and a whale frolicking just off shore. We were woken by birdcalls in the morning and spotted numerous birds including a flock of feral parrots. Our daughter loved the geckos, both green and pale pink versions, who come out to hunt insects at night.
The owners provide their own recommendation of places to go and we tried several of them, all excellent. We did lots of snorkeling, and every time spotted and even swam with sea turtles. As our first visit to the Island, and with only a week to spend, we feel we have only just started to discover this beautiful place and we hope to be back before long. Meanwhile, we agree that we have found both our new favorite hawaiian island and our new favorite place to stay.
We spent a week there and enjoyed both the island and the house that is nicely decorated, clean, spacious and filled with practically everything. The only item I could not find there was a meat thermometer :-) The listing info is accurate. Internet connection was good and easy to use.
You can see the ocean and mountains (and neighbor's bananas growing) sitting on the deck and listening birds. The place is quiet but we heard the Rt. 11 noise through the open window (not too loud).
It's possible to walk to downtown but you need a car to get to parks, beaches, shopping.
The owners are friendly. You can easy reach them by phone or email, and any reasonable issues or questions are resolved very fast. Also they've prepared a book with advices some of which we followed.
For coffee lovers we'd recommend to visit a coffee farm nearby (www.mountainthunder.com for details).
We truly enjoyed the quite neighborhood atmosphere of this property. It had fantastic accommodations and it is very close to the Kailua-Kona waterfront where we enjoyed most evenings strolling by the bay, taking in the sights, and relaxing in some of the local restaurants. The house is clean, comfortable, and has tons of amenities which saved us money and makes it much more convenient than having to eat out every meal or rent equipment at the beaches. This was our first time in Kona and I really enjoyed staying in this rental. I don't think I would do it any other way. I would definitely stay here again and have already recommended it to friends.
A well appointed home with everything we could have possibly needed for our stay. The owners provided a book with pictures and directions to the places they recommended and they were right on. We walked from the home to Ali'i Drive, took a couple of yoga on the beach classes, went whale watching, snorkeling, boogie boarding and enjoyed the restaurants, shopping and entertainment. We highly recommend staying here and hope to stay again.
Five of us, all adults, took Kona Calm for a 16-day stay centered on whale watching, diving, photography/videography and painting. The moment we arrived at the property we were thrilled with our selection, everywhere was clean and well appointed. The house had been provided with all the daily essentials and the view across the bay was wonderful.
Kona Calm is set in a particularly peaceful environment. The property stands on the edge of a well designed and modern housing estate with neighbours to the north but undeveloped land to the south. This area is rich in bird life and provides a delightful morning chorus.
The large garage area, well equipped with hanging space and an adjacent fresh water hose, made the ideal location for cleaning and storing our wet gear. The owners, Nikki & Jeff - a delightful couple who were so easy to liaise with when establishing our rental - assured us that the surf boards, picnic chairs, etc in the garage were ours to play with as we wished. Wonderful!
The kitchen, bedrooms, showers, bathrooms, etc, were all of very high quality making our stay a joy. The barbecue was a favourite in the evening, as we ate and watched the sun set across Kona bay. Of course, the house has air con but we did not find it necessary to use this; open windows with the fan running kept the property at a lovely temperature. Further, the cooler air at night combined with the ultra comfortable beds made for great sleeping.
A short distance from the house are lots of spectacular views and a few quirky, out of the ordinary, experiences - such as the chocolate factory tour! Nikki and Jeff's 'house book' offers lots of good suggestions for visits to other interesting places.
If you do not have access to a car, you can walk into town quite easily in 20-25 minutes. If you do so, you'll notice moving from the slightly cooler (higher altitude) climate around the house to the more humid conditions at sea level. The good thing is that the walk's almost all downhill :-) and a ride back up in a taxi is just $10-12.
Being off of the main through-road in Kona (the Queen Kaahumanu Highway) makes for quick access to other locations. In previous years we have stayed on Ali'i Drive but we really noticed how much faster we could get to many of our favourite places from Kona Calm - including 'Kona Boat Rental' whose services allowed us to fully enjoy the fabulous local coastline.
We really enjoyed our time in Kona Calm and would recommended the house to you.
We just returned from a 12 day trip and stayed at this wonderful home. It is spacious, clean, well equipped and nicely decorated- it gives you the feel of a resort without the crowds! The neighborhood is quiet and in close location to nearby beaches, grocery stores, touristy stuff on Ali'i drive. There is a nice park down the street if you have kids who need to burn off some energy. Our three year old loved that and wanted to go almost every day! We were sorry to leave and we will definitely be back to stay when we return to the Big Island. Thanks to the very nice owners.
