This property is in a fantastic area close to the west entrance of the National Park. Seriously... the drive is 12 minutes from the door to the West Entrance of the park, a lot of places claim this but really aren't that close. The house originated as a 50's homestead cabin and has been remodeled by the Palm Springs Architectural firm O2 Architecture. It is a very special space with great architectural details.
The house is spacious with a great flow, yet very cozy. There is a lot of glass with incredible views in every direction. The house is on 5 acres loaded with natural flora and fauna. You don't have to leave the property to feel like you've gotten away from everything. Feel the desert, drink in the night sky, cook a killer meal and enjoy you're stay!

We are completely enamored by this part of the California desert. We enjoy Joshua Tree year round and are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to come here as often as we do. We hope you come out and get your desert fix.
The Owner purchased this house in 2002
We simply love the area.
Views, relaxation, solitude, hiking, star gazing, pure fun.
Good place to go and decompress away from the city. Very close to the West entrance to the park and the central area of the town. The house itself is nicely equipped, with everything you need for a good stay in the area. Only 2 minor gripes:
1. this is a pretty pricey rental - would it be possible to clean up the construction junk sitting behind the house and by the front parking spot?
2. the weirdest design for the wi-fi - the router is actually outside and controlled by an unmarked wall switch. not sure why you'd want something like that...
Other than that, we had a very good time. This was our first visit to the area and we will be back climbing those rocks!
My family and a couple of friends got a chance to spend Thanksgiving weekend at this house and were blown away by it's beauty. The care the owners put into every detail of the house added to our visit. There is not a bad angle in this house. Everywhere I looked the outside came in in a stunning fashion. We have 4 year old twins and they had a great time playing in the nature that is the back yard. The location is great and the owner was very helpful as we had a few extra questions about what was available to us during our stay. We plan to go again and to tell our friends about this house. Thank you John!
This house was amazing. I'll get the negatives out of the way first. I had to dock it one star because the record player did not work properly. We're musicians and audiophiles and a big selling point on this place was the amazing LP collection and record player. Obviously we were pretty bummed when we couldn't get it to work. Luckily I carry around audio supplies like a weirdo and was able to hook up an 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch adapter with 1/8 inch cable to make the Ipod Work. It would've been nice if an Ipod hookup was already there for people that just wanna listen to music on their devices.
Also in the notes it tells you vaguely to maybe think about not using the shower in the master bedroom. It says it can get a bit "splashy." It should say "DO NOT EVER USE THE SHOWER ONLY TAKE BATHS" because we tried to use the shower and it immediately started flooding the place! If we didn't notice it right away the entire house probably would have filled with water! However the tub was amazing and the jacuzzi function worked just right.
Ok on to the positives. This place has the most beautiful 360 degree desert and mountain views. There is awesome plant life all around you and you can walk around collecting beautiful stones that are littered all over the place.
If you like Dwell magazine then you'll be happy with the aesthetics of this place. Very clean, kitschy, and minimal in a good way. Antique typewriters and vintage trinkets were a nice touch.
The owner was kind enough to let us bring our Boston Terrier and she had a blast. Be careful of letting your pets wander as there are coyotes around. Also watch out for rattlesnakes!
Outdoor area was great albeit pretty minimal with furniture. The fire pit was great as was the outdoor grill and big coffee table.
A/C in every room which was great, although we couldn't figure out the ceiling fan in the master.
Good kitchen with lots of stuff for cooking.
Fireplace in the main room is super chill so make sure you buy plenty of firewood.
Very quick drive to the national park and all the good stuff. The dirt road is pretty long and bumpy to get up to the house so an SUV is pretty optimal.
Wifi worked well although it took some trial and error to figure out which wall switch operated it.
Again I would've given this 5 stars but ya gotta fix that record player for us audio nerds! Also a sunbathing chair or 2 outside would help.
Highly recommended. Would definitely stay here again.
The description and photos of the house actually underestimate how epically gorgeous this house is. Modern, clean and classic, Johns place is a must see if wanting to get away in Joshua Tree. You are a short drive from the national park as well. Highly recommend this home. Thanks again John!
Our family had a lovely time here. The chance to spend a few days living 1950s California style was wonderful - the house was relaxing with wonderful views of the desert and amazing but simple decor. The kitchen was perfect - had everything we needed to cook a few meals. We also made fires in the fire pit each night and watched the stars come out. Jackrabbits and quail were spotted in the neighborhood. We really loved the chance to be here for a few days - a much better choice than a hotel. It was very close to the national park and we also had a great day of scrambling and hiking there. It might not be perfect for families with little kids, but our 3 preteens loved it! What a gorgeous retreat which allowed this East Coast family fall in love with the desert!
We loved the house so much we were ready to buy it:) The family that owns the house is lovely and so easy to work with! The views are amazing and it looks just like the pictures. And its only a few minutes form the National Park entrance.... We will be going back!
