Photos and Description of the Kehena vacation house rental
House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 3-6)

This incredible location was chosen by the subdivision owner as his personal residence when initially developed. This East facing (sunrise side) oceanfront home is located on a double lot adjacent to 200 acres of lush, unpopulated state land. A great living room of 1200 square feet, 18 foot tall ceiling and several sofa groups is a wonderful gathering place. A short walk down a secret path, next to the house, takes you to the oceans edge where you can walk for miles on a lava shelf. There are pockets of black sand and tide pools on the shelf.

About Kathy

The home is owned by two couples Steen and Hanne, and Bob and Kathy.Steen and Hanne were both born and raised in Denmark and have lived all over the world. Both couples live in rural Oregon where they enjoy sailing, gardening, their kids and grandkids, and the University of Oregon Ducks!

Kathy purchased this house in 2009
Why Kathy chose Kehena

We have family on the Big Island.

What makes this house unique

Our house is very private, with a great view of the ocean splashing on the shore. Whales passing just off shore and pods of dolphins to swim with at the black sand beach within a 5 minutes walk. The sunrises get better and better each morning. And the stars at night are so bight you feel as if you can grab them.

A Seaside Sanctuary!

Upon arrival at this beautiful, private home, we quickly fell into a sunrise to sunset lifestyle of relaxation. This home offers the best possible ocean sunrise view. I'm not kidding. It's right there, every morning.

By day, the home is bright, comfortable, filled with ocean breeze from the many screen doors and windows.
By night, the home becomes a cocoon, with soft and red lighting options.

The home has plenty of books, games, puzzles, and musical instruments to provide leisure.

The home was clean and well-maintained.

We brought our 9-month old and his 16-month old cousin. They did great with the home.

The location offers easy access to local flavor, black sand beaches, snorkeling, hiking, and Volcano/Lava viewing.

We hope to return one day!

A Piece of Hawaiian Paradise

If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing place to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul, look no further. This home and its location couldn’t be more perfect. The view is absolutely stunning. The neighbors are delightful. The locals are so friendly and we’ve even made some friends that we’ve kept in touch with there. The spirit of Aloha is alive and well!
Mornings are amazing. Whether you get up early for an easy jog along the rolling coastline, watch the spectacular sunrise while sipping on some Hawaiian coffee, or maybe a little of both.
During the day there is so much to see and do….the possibilities are nearly endless. Our personal favorites are Volcano National Park, snorkeling in the tide pools, Hilo Coffee Mill with their Saturday Market, and Sirius Coffee Company in Pahoa. Of course, mixing in relaxing days of walks on the lava beach, down to the black sand beach, and reading or resting out on the patio listening to the waves crash in are a must! If you happen upon the occasional cloud burst, be sure to watch for rainbows. We’ve never seen so many in one place!! And the landscape…this island is beautiful!!
Evenings have a magic of their own. The sunsets are gorgeous. The stars are so amazing!! We love to cook at the house (the fresh papaya tastes GREAT in salads or fresh salsa!), enjoying the meal over candle-light with the music of ocean waves crashing in…or maybe some Hawaiian tunes playing. Books, games, movies, visiting into the night before heading off to bed.
Best Coffee and/or Smoothies: Sirius Coffee Company (in Pahoa), Hilo Coffee Mill
Best Food: Kalapana Village Café, Hilo Coffee Mill

We absolutely love it here and recommend it without hesitation! It’s always hard to come home.
Warning: You’ll want to move here ?.

I wanna go back!

Wow this place exceeded my expectations!

I came with some old collage buddies from all over the country to catch up and relax together. I've been to Oahu and Kauai in the past and was a little apprehensive about trying the Big Island because it is so different from all the others. Now that I've been there I would say it's my favorite island. So untouched. We arrived at this amazing home in a welcoming community full of friendly, warm, adventurous pioneers of all ages. I can't say enough good things about the locals here. Its such a small community that by the end of out trip we felt like we had met 90 percent of the locals and we were actually sad to say goodbye. My friends and I walked in and literally freaked out when we saw our home for the week. The wide open space with tasteful tiki decor really gives you the aloha feel. I think I was most surprised at how big this place actually is. As lovely as this space was we spent most of our time on the back porch watching the waves crash against the harden lava cliff. Stunning. Would I stay here again? Absolutely! Totally worth the money. Totally recommend this place.

Miles from stress, a peaceful home.

Friends from all corners of the US met on the Big Island for a relaxing getaway, we had no idea how amazing this place would be. The Puna area is quiet, local and full of special places that make you feel at home.

We arrived to find the house more beautiful than we imagined, literally backed against the Pacific ocean with an endless sea as the focal point of the home. The elegance of the house does not make you feel out-of-place, it is a comfortable space with cool murals painted on walls and bathrooms, a library rack of books, magazines and hawaiian-themed reading. We laid out on the patio on sun-chairs and dined out there too! Full kitchen and BBQ allowed us to cook fresh, local food day and night.

You'll love the neighborhoods with outdoor markets, locals surfing and swimming in neighborhood gathering places and welcoming visitors fully.

Among our favorites were Uncle's Ava bar, an outdoor gathering space with local music; Kahena beach, footsteps away from the house; many hot springs in different places in the neighborhood, heated by the volcano, some small, some very large.

The home is backed up against a nature preserve to it is secluded though it's in a neighborhood with friendly faces. WIll definitely go back, will definitely recommend.
