In 1968 Irene and her husband Stuart honeymooned on St. John in the US Virgin Islands. The rest is history... In the early 80's they introduced their young children to not just St. John but the US and British Virgin Islands. Although the dream was to move to St. John and begin a new life in paradise, it was not until 2000 that Irene, and her daughter Christine, and son Justin, together purchased the 8 acre peninsular estate known as Steele Point.
Irina Wilson Gage purchased this villa in 2000
Steele Point Estate is perhaps one of the most unique, and stunningly picturesque, properties anywhere in the world. The property encompasses the entire Western Peninsula of the Island of Tortola. The estate is exclusively private, with three homes, all with magnificent views and unique tropical open architectural styles. Quite simply it was a most intriguing opportunity for the family to own not just a piece of paradise in the British Virgin Islands, but also one of the most impressive properties anywhere in the world.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Oh and did we mention the view? The peninsula itself is one of the many headlands that make up the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Beyond the channel is picturesque St. John however, the view from Blackbeard's is of the 7,000+ acres of undeveloped National Park. If the aforementioned views were not enough, from Blackbeard's you can also see BVI National Parks, Great Thatch Island, Sandy Cay, and Sandy Spit along with eight other islands. Another unique feature of this property is living on the very peninsula where quite literally the Atlantic and Caribbean converge. Furthermore being part of the Steele Point Estate this villa is directly in the center of not just the U.S. or BVI, but all the Virgin Islands. Everything wonderful that the Virgin Islands has to offer is equidistant and easily accessible. Lastly, because the peninsula is a gated estate you have the privacy of a private island, but the convenience of being on BVI's main island.
My wife and I recently stayed at this magnificent home for our 20th Anniversary and we had a lovely time. The elegant villa is located at the West End of Tortola on the exclusive Steele Point Estate peninsula. The home offers pure luxury and outstanding comfort with everything you need and more. The villa also offers breathtaking views of the ocean and the nearby islands of Little Thach, Thach, Frenchman’s Cay, St. John and St. Thomas. You can enjoy amazing sunset over St. Thomas from the gorgeous terrace, and views of Jost Van Dyke Island from the north garden. The interiors are mingled with the outdoors through a wide opening. Besides, each master bedroom has a large two-fold glass door that allows spectacular views from your own bed. The showers are partially open to the environment for very private views and the fresh breeze. The place is very safe and secluded for added privacy, yet you feel accompanied by the many passing or nearby anchored boats that transit through the peninsula and Little Thatch Island. The home, as well as, linens and towels are immaculate. The only things in need of some care are the sofas on the living room. You get daily housekeeping service from Ira, a charming lady that will greet you and show you around upon arrival. Ira does a nice job and will try her best to come to the house at a reasonable and convenient time for you. Ashis is the really sweet man who takes care of the manicured gardens and the pool. He would announce himself before starting any work. We never felt that our privacy was invaded whatsoever. Both of them are very polite and do a great job in keeping this place shining. Mrs. Irina, the owner, is very gracious and provides very useful information to her guests. She called us upon arrival to make sure everything was going well. As far as location, there are a few beaches, restaurants, the Soper’s Hole Marina, a Spa, groceries and shops nearby. However, please keep in mind that you will need a 4x4 to move around as the short road to get to the house is a narrow dirt road. It is about a 2 minute drive to the paved road. Smuggler’s Cove beach is another 5 minutes up the dirt road. We definitely recommend renting from Dede’s car rental. They deliver the car to the port and have great service. I had a flat tire and they came and fixed it for free while we were at Jost Van Dyke and had the car ready when we got back. Overall we really enjoyed our stay would definitely love to be back in the future.
We loved this house. The kitchen was well supplied. The staff were very kind. Loved the trail to the dock. Had two kayaks delivered for the week right to the dock. The snorkeling was great. Could have sat there forever watching the boats go by.
This place is amazing. First the concept of bringing the outdoors in is wonderful. My husband and I just got back from this wonderful place. First, Irina the owner is great, answered all of our questions, and got my husband fishing poles, he was happy as can be, he went fishing every day very early in the morning. The house is in great condition, top of the line appliances and beautiful antique furniture with some really solid wood pieces. The open concept shower is to die for amazing, the views are incredible, while we were there we did not experience any bugs, you will get some here and there due to the open concept of the villa.
The air conditioner in the bedroom was in great condition and worked perfectly, we needed it at night.
Smugglers cover, oh wow, what a beach, husband got up at 4:am for fishing we then had breakfast around 6 am, and by 7:30 am we were at the beach till about 1:00pm. You can swim in the middle and snorkel on the left, the reef on the left is not doing well, you could see some coral and some color coming back to life that is indeed good news, there are a lot of beautiful fish and many with different colors and so on, to the right there were baby sharks swimming around we snorkel there as well and took some pictures of the sharks.
We grilled most of our meals, we visited Nanny Cay, and Frenchman cay, and Road town for some shopping. You can also snorkel by the villa's pier/dock, the life reef there is amazing, we saw a few turtles, and some big fishes going by, mahi mahi maybe? we were not sure. The beach chairs they provide are top of the line.
Our experience at the villa was almost perfect, I would have rated it 5 stars if not for one thing, I was having my morning coffee around 9:30 am and I was asked by Ira what time we were living? when I said around 10:30am she acted as if it was an inconvenience, check out is at 11:00 am and we were not planning on checking out later than that. We were not too happy about that.
These are some things that need improvement and/or replacement.
1-Cooler is broken
2-Coffee machine(bottom) is in bad shape and could be a fire hazard. Maybe get one that shuts off automatically.
3-Living room furniture could use some cleaning, the furniture itself, cushions and so on are a bit dingy looking.
Be aware the laundry facility is below the villa and housekeepers are up and down the stairs while you are trying to relax on the deck.
We love the villa and planning on coming back!
My wife and I stayed at Blackbeard's at Steele Point Villa for her birthday and we had a wonderful time. We have stayed at many villas throughout the Caribbean and this villa, setting and location shine above the rest. At the top of the list is the attention to detail that the owner Irena pays to not only the care and maintenance of the villa, but to every detail of your stay. She was available by phone and email to help us plan the trip and make sure that provisions, car, transfers, and other details were handled before and after we arrived. She was a very gracious host at all times. The villa itself is breathtaking with unbelievable sunset views over St. Thomas, and views of the bay and St. John and Little Scrub Island. It is fun to wake up in the morning and see the 250 ft yacht anchored not 200 yards from your terrace. The villa is within an easy drive to wonderful beaches and great restaurants. The villa itself is located on the western tip of Tortola on eight cliff top acres, so you have absolute privacy. If you want something very special, this is the villa and the island you are looking for.
We spent 9 days at Blackbeards in June for our honeymoon and absolutely loved it.
Gorgeous views, beautiful house, very relaxing. Everything we wanted!
Definitely get a 4WD to get up the hill, as it's pretty rough. Very nice location next to the West End ferry terminal for day trips to Virgin Gorda or Jost Van Dyke. Short drive to Smugglers Cove or Long Bay.
Again, can't recommend this place enough- it's gorgeous!
We found Blackbeard's Hideaway incredibly clean, bright, open, airy, and oooh those views! 180 degree jaw dropping views from the front of the villa and a very short stroll across your private road reveals another 180 degree view of the opposite side of the peninsula that the villa lies on. The infinity pool and ocean access via a nicely cleared pathway were great. The snorkeling off of the dock was private and wonderful, as were the sunsets. The villa is located in a convenient spot close to a marina, grocery store, and some great restaurants (The Clubhouse at Frenchman's Resort and Bananakeet were two favorites!) We found it difficult to drive away from this villa on a day to day basis to explore Tortola... We think you will too!
