You are going to love being here! It is so very beautiful & so wonderfully peaceful! Listen to the creek flowing & the birds singing and the breeze blowing. The sunsets down the valley & the brilliant stars in the night-sky are awe-inspiring. You can hike anywhere on the land & there are spectacular views from every vantage point. Picnic on the meadows & explore the creeks & park-like woods.
Please Note: Britt Boucher, a naturalist/forester, and his ever-faithful fielddog, Jenna, are currently residing in the studio apartment in the basement of the house. The apartment has a separate entrance and is not connected to the main quarters. And Britt will always respect your privacy at the retreat. Britt is a joy to know and we’re lucky to count him as a friend, as well as to have him advising us in forest and farm management of Clover Hollow Farm. Britt's Bio: Britt is a private Forest and Farm Manager working for the planet to help maintain our farmland and forest health. A farmer & naturalist that spends most of his time “playing” in the dirt, growing food, assessing plant-community health, “listening” to trees, and counseling the forest. Like all true naturalists- quiet, humble, accommodating - he will be respectful of your desire for privacy. But, if you wish, and can catch him… he is always delighted to talk about farming and forest care... and the sounds of the forest at night.
While at Blackberry Morning, experience fun outdoor adventures! -- You can often see whitetail deer in the open pastures around the house early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The wild turkeys are elusive, but you can sometimes see them in the pastures or crossing the road. You can hike the Appalachian Trail at the top of our property. It's a 2.5 mile moderate-hike to Kelly Knob overlook. Other nearby hikes are Angel's Rest, Wind Rock and Dragon's Tooth. The Cascades Nat'l Recreation Site waterfall is just 10 miles West -- a great place to picnic and fly-fish for native trout. There are other wild & stocked trout streams nearby, including Big Stony Creek. The New River has canoeing, kayaking & tubing less than 15 miles West. And there's white-water rafting in West Virginia on the New & the Gauley, about two hours away, and you can bungee-jump off the New River Gorge Bridge in WVA, too. There is also skiing at Winter Place and Snowshoe in W.V., one-two hours West. You can go sailing, motor-boating, water-skiing, swimming & picnicking at Claytor Lake, just an hour away. Stop by Mikey's 7th in Newport and pick up a picnic lunch to take with you. And plan a special gourmet dinner at the Palisades Restaurant in Eggleston while you're here. Great fun!
Yet, we're just 14.5 miles, 25 minutes across two mountains, to Blacksburg & VATech University, where there are all kinds of things to do that you typically find in a university town. Enjoy VATech sports, graduation & special events. Picnic by the Duck Pond, walk on the paved trails around campus, go to concerts on campus and at the smaller venue of the Lyric Theater downtown (old, restored movie-house). And there is a brand-new Performing Arts Center. There are side-walk cafes like Gillie's & Caba Fish Taco where you can hear local music, & great local restaurants like Bull & Bones and Zeppoli's, as well as favorite chains. There are movie theaters and downtown small-shops & mall shopping. There's a year-round indoor pool at the Blacksburg Recreation Center on our side of Blacksburg, where they also have basketball courts, tennis courts, a skateboard ramp, & a hand-in-hand playground on a large open field with picnic shelters. They have great 4th of July fireworks there, too!

About Suzy, Owner
My husband and I purchased this property on our honeymoon! He was a new Assistant Professor in M.E. at VATech and I was a late-blooming student in English. We were blessed with the birth of our two sons six and nine years later. We are all VATech Hokies: Hal, M.E. 1960; Suzy, English 1974, Brooks, M.E. 1997, Shane, Biology & Political Science 2003.
Suzy, Owner purchased this house in 1969
Why Suzy, Owner chose Blacksburg
Hal & I fell in love with the farm on our first visit - looking for a place to make our home together. On that beautiful Spring day in April, we walked up the mountain, sat on a big rock and looked down the valley at that incredible view - and knew this was where we wanted to be - forever.
What makes this house unique
Stunningly beautiful views and wonderfully peaceful environment on a private farm (268 acres) - with a contemporary cedar, fieldstone & glass house that wraps you up in comfort - adjoining the Jefferson Nat'l Forest and the Appalachian Trail, yet close enough to all the people & culture of Blacksburg & VATech.
Guestbook comments from the owner
Had a great time, lots to celebrate! Two college graduations, a homecoming from Afghanistan, and an engagement atop the Kelly Knob Trail! What a special place tucked so far from the hustle-bustle, yet close enough to VT, and all the comforts one desires. Lots of memories made, and stories to tell for years to come! Thanks for a great week at Blackberry Morning!
