The pictures don't lie. This place is absolutely gorgeous and has all of the amenities a traveler or long term renter desires. The Whippet House was originally built as a blacksmith shop in the early 1900's. It was converted into townhouses in the 1960s by one of Savannah's first historic preservationists, Helen Downing.
There is a spectacular, private courtyard with outdoor fireplace and gas grill.
We chose this location and decorated it according to our own requirements and standards. It is truly a gem of a place to stay while visiting one of the most beautiful cities in the country.
In the Whippet House, you will find beautiful hardwood floors, high ceilings, antiques, original art, oriental rugs, 3 flat screen TVs with DVD, WiFi, Ipod docking station, Marble floors, granite countertops, leather wing chair, silk curtains, etc. But it is not fussy. It is very handsome and comfortable.
There is a living room, dining room, kitchen, washer/dryer, and 1/2 bath of the first floor. All of these rooms are very handsome and comfortable.
Upstairs is a "five-star", large, master bedroom with a king bed, dressing area, desk, antique painting and mirrors and a very handsome, private hall bath with tub/shower combination. The other bedroom is adorable. It has an antique Queen bed and dresser and an exposed brick wall from the original outside of the house. There is an adjoining bath with a tub/shower combination.
Both bedrooms have TVs with DVD and large closets.
The Whippet House is ideally located on a storybook, tree-lined street in a residential area in the historic district, just around the corner from the Mansions of Gaston St. It is only 2 blocks from Forsyth Park which is a hub of activity with lawn sports, festivals and the weekly farmers market on Saturday. The historic district is only 2 square miles, so you can walk to all attractions. As the city is a museum itself, walking is the most recomended activity while visiting. Cabs are easy to find and the free downtown "catch-a-cat" shuttle stop is 5 short blocks away for an easy ride to or from Riverstreet or other areas. If you want to be in the middle of the nightlife, you may want to choose a hotel on River St.or the City Market area. If you want to be close to everything but have the luxury of experiencing your time here on a quiet, neighborly, beautiful street, this is it. After a busy day of touring, just a few blocks removes you to another time and place, to call your home.
Hope you decide to stay at the Whippet House. You will not be disappointed.
My husband and I are native Savannians and truly appreciate our home town and all it has to offer.
We live 25 minutes from the historic district and wanted to have something we could use for our own enjoyment. As we can't use it as much as we'd like, we are able to share it with visitors looking for a homelike setting while visiting one of the most beautiful cities in the country. We chose this location because of the storybook setting of charming homes in a residential area as well as it's 2 block proximity to Forsyth Park.
We just love to walk around town, slipping into shops and cafes. We also take advantage of the many festivals and concerts offered throughout the year. We usually walk to dinner and hire a cab or pedi-cab (like a bicycle rickshaw) to deliver us back to our front door. We also attend church nearby.
Savannah is the epitome of the 'Old South' 2 square miles of beautiful historic home, 21 squares with monuments, fountains, lush greenery and oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Museums, shopping districts, art galleries, beaches, and many festivals throughout the year. Close to Hilton Head and Tybee Island.
