Overview

Long Island Estate Rental Photos and Description

6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, 3 extra beds in loft and media room, sleeps 16

Solstice is a modern vacation rental on Long Island in the southern Bahamas. Our 10-acre property on the Tropic of Cancer includes two houses nestled in a tropical forest with stunning views overlooking their own private cove with a sandy beach. The two houses are always rented together for one price to ensure your privacy. Surrounded by hundreds of acres of undeveloped wilderness and two miles of wild coastline, Solstice is the ultimate place to get away from it all...

At Solstice, we strive to provide the most socially and environmentally conscious vacation destination available. All of the rent is donated to charities supporting basic human needs and the environment. Solar power and other eco-friendly initiatives make a stay at Solstice healthy both for you and for the planet. It is a true carbon-neutral vacation. Click near the bottom of this page where it says 'Please see owner's website for further details' for more pictures and information.

Your own private cove: Just a minute's walk from your doorstep, down a pleasant tree-lined trail, lies the dream of every tropical vacationer: a private secluded cove with a sandy beach and water that is as clear, calm and warm as a swimming pool.

Some rental houses claim that they have a 'private beach' but this usually means that the property owns a portion of a larger beach which is accessible to the public and visible from other houses. However, the beach at Solstice is completely surrounded by our property and the only land access is from the houses. The cove's seclusion and calm waters made it a favorite hiding place for pirates and smugglers in years past, but today the only footprints you will see in the fine white sand will be your own.

Relaxing at Solstice: Flowers and tree-lined paths surround both houses. Take a stroll through the gardens and help yourself to the fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. Relax in a hammock or snorkel in the tranquil cove. Large decks on both houses are great places for morning yoga, spotting passing dolphins or watching for the elusive 'green flash' at sunset. At night, the view from the garden is perhaps just as amazing with the sky awash with the Milky Way and countless stars.

Perfect for couples or multiple families: Having two houses makes Solstice extremely flexible. Whether you are coming for a family reunion that makes use of all 10 beds or a romantic getaway, the space never feels overlarge or overcrowded. Though the houses are only a 30 second walk apart, a strip of forest provides privacy between them, great if you are traveling with a second family or staff.

Why Laurel and Brian Smith, Owners chose Long Island

It is remarkable to find a property with its own private cove and sandy beach. We looked at houses around the world and this property was truly unique. The houses were also special, designed and built with love by their owners and furnished with original art and furniture. Solstice is perfectly secluded and yet not TOO far from grocery stores, restaurants and other amenities. It's far from Seattle where we live but it's worth the commute!

Beautiful location on an awesome island!

  • 5 of 5

Solstice is located on a beautiful cove. Very private. Coffee on the covered patio in the mornings, looking out over the cove..perfect.

The beach was awesome. Perfect for both swimming and snorkelling. Nice sandy bottom. Some of our group of 12 actually saw two dolphins just on the edge of the cove. Water was super safe, even for little ones, due to the calmness on the lee side of the island.Having the gazebo and grill down at the beach was a great benefit as well.

The homes left nothing to be desired. We were 3 families of 4 each, and we had lots of room. The homes were well equipped to cook all your own meals if you wished. Only caveat with Long Island is that if you are a group of 12, you really need to make advance reservations ANYWHERE if you want to eat out as a group.

Mark and Jill certainly do a good job of looking after this place.

We have travelled to a few of the other Bahamas out islands. We found Long Island to be quieter than both Eleuthera and Exuma. But we also found the people to be about the friendliest anywhere. And the beaches cannot be beat. If you are looking for a safe destination for family where you can mingle with the locals effortlessly, then this is the place.

Not much need to leave the property if you just want to relax. But still lots to see on the island.

We would recommend this property whole-heartedly for any family or group looking for a relaxing and care-free holiday. It really is worth the extra flight out of Nassau to get to somewhere like this.

Solstice is definitely on our list to return to one day. Thanks Brian and Laurel!

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent 7 days at Solstice and have loved every minute of it. The position is perfect with a short stroll to the water. The house had everything that we needed and we were able to cook all of our meals. The Kayaks were so much fun for everyone, we got to explore the shoreline and saw a shark and stingray in our travels. We had perfect weather the whole time and got to sit on the deck every evening and see the sun go down over the water. Our neighbours Mark and Jill were so kind to us and made our stay here even more rewarding, we would like to thank them especially. The wildlife was more than we expected and gave us a few interesting moments. We would love to go back and spend more time there.

Fantastic vacation, beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Solstice for a week in February and had a fabulous time! It was a big group (10 people) with ages ranging from 5 to 71, and everyone easily found something to do. Both houses are well equipped and beautifully maintained, and Jill and Mark were invaluable in assisting with anything that came up. We drove up and down the island - visiting Deans Blue Hole and various other beaches - but always returned to the most beautiful spot. We cooked right out of the organic garden on site, enjoyed sunsets on the porch, took meadering kayak rides off the private beach into the adjacent coves (seeing starfish, conch), swam for hours, star gazed, etc. A beautiful spot for a relaxing vacation.

The Best of Both Worlds

  • 5 of 5

'Best trip ever' was the consensus agreement from all 12 of us (2 families with 4 kids of age range 8 - 19). The vacation stay on Long Island truly was an amazing blend of adventure that comes with a relatively non-commercialized Bahamian island and the plush accommodations of the Solstice and Kaleidoscope properties. Both houses are spacious and beautiful with amazing views, wonderfully secluded areas for privacy, contemporary and functional furniture, fully appointed kitchens and an impressive lot of electronics (8 foot movie screen, sound systems, intercom, etc.). Many nights we cooked in the kitchen, obtaining fresh vegetables from the well-tended garden and delighting in the most amazing sunsets from our huge outdoor patio. Couple this with your own private cove / beach, loaded with all of the extras (chairs, snorkel gear, grill, kayaks, cabana, etc.) and you really never need to leave the property, and you'd have a great vacation.

But you really need to explore beyond Solstice as Long Island has so much to offer. Along with the property you receive a detailed document summarizing years of experience and knowledge about places to go, sites to see, restaurants to visit, island "do's and don'ts"... which is continually updated to ensure its up-to-date relevance. We visited 5 or 6 of the most beautiful beaches during our trip and only saw one other group of people the entire time! The snorkeling and fishing were great and exploring the cliffs and caves around the cove provided great entertainment for my entire family. The restaurant Chez Pierre served deliciously fresh salads, pizzas and seafood and Seaside Village put you right on top of the water, sipping rum drinks and eating conch pulled directly from the water below. Perhaps the most wonderful part of Long Island, however, is the people themselves... genuinely gracious, happy and welcoming.

I can't speak highly enough about the property owners and the 'local contacts' that made sure everything was perfect. You can tell that they take a lot of pride in the Solstice experience they've created. It truly is a special place and as a result we have lifelong memories. As you can see, they certainly 'hit the mark' with our family and friends!

WOW!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a truly unique tropical island experience then look no further! You have found it! My husband and I have traveled extensively throughout the Bahamas and in the Caribbean. We have rented multiple places on Long Island alone and Solstice is by far our favorite spot. It is centrally located on the Island allowing you easy access to explore the north and south ends of Long Island if you choose to do so.

The house is nestled above a private, peaceful cove in a tropical jungle allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the remote, natural beauty of this amazing island. The house is open, airy and so comfortable. We awoke every morning to the sweet sounds of birds chattering in the trees and at night marveled over the different varieties of sticky tree frogs that would curiously venture out to observe us! The fully stocked kitchen allowed us to easily enjoy fabulous sunset meals on the terrace with the tomatoes, eggplant, lettuces and peppers that we harvested from the house garden. We enjoyed paddling around and outside of the cove on the Solstice sea kayaks and took several snorkeling trips with the equipment provided.

Brian and Laurel gave us all of the information we needed to make our stay at Solstice and on Long Island a pleasant one. The caretakers, Jill and Mark, were great as well... helpful but respectful of our privacy at the same time. I am not aware of another house like this one in all of the Bahamas. It was an amazing experience and we cannot wait to go back!

Enjoyable out-island retreat

  • 5 of 5

We and two other couples stayed at Solstice during July of 2011. There were 12 of us altogether (6 kids age 11 to 16) and the two houses accomodated us easily. Both houses are in very good condition, with the kitchen at Solstice easily the best equiped of any rental house we have experienced. The property is completely private and the cove is as it looks: fantastic. The snorkling and swimming, in the cove and along the surrounding shore was very enjoyable (the rock formations are fantastic). We should also note that the local care takers, Mark and Jill were very helpful to us and add to value of this rental. The island itself is sparsely populated, and at least in July, almost completely without tourists. We visited many beautiful beaches by car and never shared them with anyone, not even for a few minutes! When you run into them, the local folks are extremely friendly. Only two downsides that we can see: 1. The local markets are stocked with the basics but not much more. 2. There is no shortage of mosquitos. Thats part of the deal in the tropics but the location on the west side means calm water (good) and relatively less breeze (more bugs). There were relatively few at the house and on the beach, but the transit through the brush to the beach or between houses always seemed to net a couple new bites per pass. However, salt water definitely calms the bites down! Its the price of being in an unspoiled tropical environment. We very much enjoyed our week at Solstice and would recommend it to anyone wanting a true out-island experience.
