Lo Laughing: A period Hollywood producer’s bungalow in Rancho Mirage

In 1958 William Krisel designed for the founding members of the Tamarisk Country Club -including the Marx Brothers- a small colony of freestanding 2000 sq. ft. plus garage bungalows around what was at the time one of the largest pools in the desert. Each private home was sited on 1/5 acre and was unique - featuring a stone or brick fireplace, large glass walls, post and beam construction and clearstory windows. A common park area with pool and spa is the colony focal point. The site: Tamarisk Ranchos, in Rancho Mirage, California, a former date palm ranch adjacent to Palm Springs, is a stone’s throw from the Tamarisk Golf and Country Club.

Lo, Laughing, on the cul de sac Tamarisk Lane, was the desert bungalow of producer Lawrence Weingarten (several Marx and Hepburn/Tracy pictures including the Newman/Taylor classic 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'). Owned by his family until two years ago, and architecturally intact and historically plaqued, the property is now available for seasonal rental.

Clean and furnished with period furniture, this two bedroom, three bathroom home sleeps four and has a third unfurnished bedroom/maid’s quarters. Two-zone central heating and cooling ensure comfort. The attached garage accommodates a mid-sized vehicle with additional storage space for bicycles and sporting equipment. Mature fruit trees, manicured grounds and gardens and towering date palms surround the property.

This property is very near the Tamarisk Country Club, but is not on the course and there are many, many accessible courses - both public and private - in the immediate vicinity. The area has over 40 tennis clubs.

The kitchen will be renovated and updated in the Summer of 2014 with a Viking Range, Monogram Refrigerator and marble countertops but the mid-century style and vision of the architect William Krisel is pure and intact throughout. The newly carpeted large master bedroom sports a Cal-king sized bed, two large closets and en-suite full bath with tub/shower, and marble floor. The carpeted (also newly) guest bedroom has a queen bed, oversized closet and large en-suite bathroom with enclosed shower. A separate entrance from the private yard coupled with pocket doors allow the adjacent den to be used as a sitting room to create a guest suite. The den also accesses the third bathroom/with shower and a maid's room has twin beds for use in a pinch. New high-end linens are among the many details that add to the refined ambiance of this home. This past season, the original gardens have been restored and the exterior has been newly painted.

Remarkably, the home is furnished with the original Monteverde Young pieces, designed for Mr. Weingarten, including the bedroom suite. The living/dining area is approximately 900 sq. ft. and looks out on a lushly landscaped central park and shared spa/heated pool where 60' tall date palms frame mountain views. The interior has been freshly painted with original pale colors. New area rugs and a vintage Chinese rug create the living and dining areas respectively on the new honed Carrara marble floors.

Security and cleaning deposits are required commensurate with rental duration. Non-smoking only, and a pet must be negotiated. Landscaping, pool/spa heating, and pool/spa service costs are provided through the home-owner's association and are not additional costs to the renter. Cable TV and broadband high-speed internet service with Wi-Fi are available. Gas and electric utilities are included up to limits to be negotiated based on rental duration - added costs must be paid separately based on use. Note: homes with private pools must be heated in the Winter and that cost alone can be $1- 1.5k a month. The heated Tamarisk pool - which is very private - is included.

Mark and Bill are transplants to San Diego from Providence, Rhode Island. In addition to Lo Laughing, they maintain an available lakeside camp on Lake Titus in the Northern Adirondack Mountains (ADK by owner) . Mark is an Engineer in the Defense Industry; Bill is retired from 32 years in the administration of Brown University and currently consults.

The Hepplewhite and Sheraton that came with them from Providence is in their San Diego row house. Lo Laughing has provided a first class hands'on lesson in mid-century modern and they are loving it as they learn!

We looked many places (Savannah, Charleston, Tucson, Miami, Charlottesville - for a warm weather home and bought Lo Laughing on sight.

Shortly after, floating in the 85 degree pool - with snow covered mountains on the horizon, we looked at each other and said 'duh' in unison. It is just perfect.

Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert surround us and provide for any possible need - practically, aesthetically and culturally. The health care is top -notch.

PERFECT WEATHER, PERFECT LOCATION

We spent the months of January, February and March of 2012 at Lo Laughing. The weather was beautiful almost everyday and we absolutely loved the location. The neighborhood was great for biking or walking. Plus, we were less than 10 minutes from fine dining, shopping and entertainment.
The home was clean, comfortable and the furnishings were true Mid Century modern. The linens were high count and the towels were thick and plush. Bill and Mark were wonderful landlords. They made every effort to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. And yes, there was wine waiting for us upon our arrival.

My stay at Lo Laughing was during the months of March and April of 2011. It is a very peaceful, quiet, clean and comfortable home. Bill and Mark are the finest landlords that I have worked with during my 8 years of renting in the Desert area. They have furnished the home with all of the amenities of today's hi-tech needs combined with the beauty of Hollywood's glamour and nostalgia. I was fortunate to have found this home and more so to make a long lasting friendship with Bill and Mark. I look forward to my next stay at Lo Laughing.

Bill and Mark also own a lakehouse in the Adirondacks that I have had the privilege to rent numerous times. I am delighted to assure you that they are terrific landlords. I arrive to a spotless house, bed made up with down puff and high count linens, and usually a bottle of wine in the fridge or some other thoughtful touch.
