Santa Cruz is on the north side of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. It has the unique location of being on the Bay and on the open ocean. The views are spectacular, whales often come with 100 yards of shore, it is just south of the largest elephant seal breeding area in the world, and the front yard is home to otters, dolphins, pilot whales and many, many more shore and ocean creatures.
