Located in a beautiful seaside peninsula on Long Island Sound, the house a spacious and comfortable with three levels, including a finished walkout basement level. The house includes a large modern kitchen, family room, formal living room with grand piano, dining room, and a walkout patio and deck on the first floor. The second floor has 4 bedrooms, including a master bedroom with newly renovated master bath balcony and water views, 3 other bedrooms and a newly renovated hall bathroom on the second floor. The lower level has a bedroom, full bath with steam room, and an activity room, including a pool table and TV connections. The yard has an inground pool accessed from the living room, a large back lawn, party gazebo and beautiful plantings. The house is in a wonderful neighborhood with great walks along the waterfront along one of the prettiest public-accessible waterfronts in the New York area. Transportation to New York is easy with several nearby commuter rail stops.
The house is on a hilltop overlooking Ash Creek and Long Island Sound in the St. Mary's by the Sea section of Black Rock, CT, a historic colonial era community which is adjacent to Black Rock Harbor to the East and Ash Creek to the west. This seaside community has a wonderful promenade around St. Mary's Point and is excellent for walking, running and biking. The harbor is home to a large fleet of sailboats and two yacht clubs, which sponsor active sail racing programs year-round, including an active 'Big Boat' program and winter 'frost-bite' regattas in Ideal 18's and other classes. Ash Creek is a tidal estuary with great kayaking or canoeing, great fishing and birdwatching with an osprey nest, egrets, Great blue herons and waterfowl.
The community is close to New York City, 45 miles, and New Haven, home of Yale University, 20 miles. New York is the daily destination of many residents who commute on Metro-North into Grand Central Station in the City. The house would be a comfortable getaway location, a home for short term work re-locations, and a central base for exploring the many destinations of the Northeast. Boston is 2.5 hours away, and excellent skiing in Vermont is as close as 2.5 hours (Mt. Snow, VT). Tanglewood and the Berkshire, Providence and the Rhode Island seashore and beaches and the New Jersey seashore and beaches are short drives away.
Every year all the women in the family treat my mother to a weekend away for her birthday. This beautiful home was perfect. There were 11 of us and plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms. We went walking in the neighborhood and along the waterfront, spent lots of time on the deck, and enjoyed the spacious family room at night. The house was clean, comfortable and loaded with amenities. The owners were always very helpful and answered all inquiries promptly. Our only regret was that we could not stay longer but we would definitely stay here again.
We just returned from a week stay with 10 people. 7 adults and 3 older kids. We didn't spend a ton of time at the house as we took the ferry over to Long Island for a drive up to the Hamptons and drove or took the train into Manhattan 4 of the days we were there. The train station to Grand Central is less than 10 minutes from the house and the ferry to Long Island is about 15 minutes. There are several grocery stores, including a brand new Whole Foods and liquor stores and restarants all very close. If you plan to buy alcohol check out the liquor laws in CT before you go - they are a bit behind the times with regards to when and where you can buy alcohol.
The house is very large. It has 3 levels with bedrooms and 2 full baths on the top level, kitchen, sitting areas, half bath etc on the 2nd level and a bedroom and full bath on the lower level with more seating areas and a pool table. The grounds were also very large with several seating areas on decks as well as around a large pool and a gazebo area. If you have kids that want to run around and play there is a big backyard.
All of the "guys" enjoyed playing basketball in the courtyard in front of the house and pool in the basement when it rained.
We cooked breakfast and dinner every day for 10 with no problems. There are 2 ovens, and an indoor grill as well as an outdoor gas grill (that needs a new starter).
There is also a washer and dryer in the house that came in handy. And most important for those of us that had to work - very fast wifi access with a desk in the living room to work on.
We would definitely return. The value for the money on this property cannot be beat!!
We had been badly let down by another property owner and needed a comfortable dog friendly house to rent for the remainder of our holiday.....
After contacting HOMEAWAY, we were able to get in touch with Tint Sheppard, the owner of "Hilltops". She was very helpful and we were able to move in a few days later.
What a nice clean comfortable house with all the facilities you could want to enable you to enjoy your stay.
We would recommend this property to anyone wanting a relaxing holiday at any time of the year.

We have rented many houses over the years for family events and vacations. Tint and Ralph's house was the best! The location, comfort, cleanliness and beautiful indoor and outdoor space allowed our family of ten to have a wonderful vacation. Everything was just as pictured (even better) and Tint and Ralph were a pleasure to work with. We will be returning this summer.
We searched long and hard to find a suitable house that would accomodate our family reunion/vacation for 12 of us and our dogs. It was our good fortune to choose this home for the event.
The home is spacious and bright and the fenced-in yard a bonus for the little ones and pets. We, especially the grandkids, loved the pool and our daughter-in-law entertained us each evening with her skills at the piano.
We will definitely consider coming back again next summer!
We enjoyed a family reunion at this home. It was a perfect setting and the accomidations were not only comfortable, but luxurious. The pool was totally enjoyable along with the lower level game room. We spent many hours enjoying the World Cup... Rode the train into the city... Wow! We will come again. Thank you Tint & Ralph!
