Perfect for a couple looking for a romantic lakeside vacation or a small family wanting a taste of the lake country magic, this cozy cabin on the north shore of Pelican Lake in Otter Tail County offers the best of the lake country. Imagine yourself sitting on the bench at the end of the dock, scanning the lake horizon for a sign of your loved one returning from a day of fishing. Maybe you'll want to put a line in yourself, from the end of the dock. Imagine waking up to the sound of a loon or the low hum of a fisherman trolling out for the day. Imagine drifting on your inflatable or taking a kayak ride along the north shore. Enjoy a romantic sunset from the front window.
This log cabin was just completed in September of 2009. It contains a fully furnished kitchen, queen size bed, fold-down futon, and all linens. There is a large deck on the lakeside that hangs just above the shore and has a beautiful patio set so you can serve dinner outside on nice days. There is an eleven foot lake kayak at your disposal during your stay, stored on the kayak rack attached to the 24' dock. Sorry, no boat is available, but you are welcome to bring your own....we now have a boat lift, and the public boat ramp is only a mile west.
This energy efficient cabin has all the modern conveniences with none of the hassle. It has a air source heat pump climate control system that keeps your cabin at a steady temperature, heated in the spring and fall, and cooled in the summer. With an R-44 roof system, you won't need to use much energy to keep the cabin just the right temperature.
During the summer months, the cabin is available by the week, month, or season. During the shoulder seasons, the cabin is available for 2 day minimum rentals. The cabin is closed from late October through the end of March.
And speaking of convenience (weren't we?), the world famous Zorbaz on the Beach is right across the road, if you don't feel like cooking. On summer holiday weekends (Memorial day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day), entertainment is available. The Yacht club is the closest neighbor to the west (about 1/4 mile away), so you can enjoy the boats coming and going during lazy summer afternoons. It just doesn't get any better than this.
Pelican Lake has recently achieved the status of a Minnesota Star Lake! What does that mean? Minnesota's State Legislature formally established a Star Lakes and Rivers program in 2008 to encourage and reward citizen-based lake and river associations that actively participate in protecting and enhancing surface waters of Minnesota.
Note: There are several Pelican Lakes in Minnesota! This cabin is located in Otter Tail County, between Detroit Lakes and Pelican Rapids.

My husband and I enjoy living in sun drenched Colorado, but when it came time for a vacation home, I returned to my roots in Minnesota. There is something about the Minnesota lake life that cannot be duplicated anywhere else. This property belonged to my aunt's estate, and when I bought it in 2008, I realized that the original cabin could not be saved. I had the local fire department burn it down for a training exercise, and had Log Homes, Minnesota, erect the new structure.
Jan Coffelt purchased this cabin in 2008
Minnesota lake living is unique in many ways. The people are fun loving and generous of spirit. The pace is slow and relaxed.
I love an early morning kayak on the lake. Often I can only hear the sound of the paddle hitting the surface of the water.
A great little cabin on Pelican Lake. Upon arrival everything was in great shape and very clean. The cabin is not big whatsoever, but is absolutely perfect for a couple looking to get away for a week/weekend. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils, bed is comfortable and everything else in on the property is in great shape. The boat lift worked well for our little fishing boat, although it took some prompting to get the lift to descend into the water deep enough to get a boat on top-it was a little stuck. The deck is in great shape with an awesome set of chairs and a table, and the dock is in nice shape as well, with a comfy bench near the end for taking in sunrises and sunsets. Not a good place for kids, or someone who has to get away from road noise. It is right on the county rd which has a decent amount of traffic on weekends, and there is a lot of boat traffic moving in and out from Zorbaz, but it was perfect for us.
Communication with Jan was great, and we never had any issues with getting our deposit back. I would recommend the property to anyone who asked!
My friend and I stayed at the cabin for a week so that we could fish Pelican Lake. The cabin is like new, inside and out. The kitchen is wonderful with nice appliances and all. The bathroom is large, clean, and very nice. The bed is comfortable. The futon is well worn and has a board that runs the length down the middle and sticks in your side if you sleep on it. You more or less have to choose to sleep on one narrow side or the other and not roll onto the board in your sleep.
The deck is wonderful and has nice furniture.
There is very little parking. You have to park on the shoulder or take up most of the yard space and park in the lawn.
We were told of the boat lift. I mentioned to the owner that my friend had a Ranger fiberglass fishing boat. When we go there, we realized the lift had many things wrong that prohibited us from using it. It was too narrow, the bunks would not submerge enough (the back bunk was about an inch below the water's surface, and the back bunk was just a flat surface and would not adequately provide proper support for a fiberglass boat (see picture on this advertisement). The lift cover as pictured in the ad was not on the lift. There are no good places on the dock to tie a boat. We had to pull our boat each day.
Zorbaz, while very convenient and close, is a little noisy, especially on weekends. And, with the cabin right at the intersection and only set back about 20', there is a lot of noise with cars and motorcycles accelerating from the stop sign and intersection.
We wanted a lakeside cabin without paying a fortune & this place was PERFECT! We went there 4th of July, and seeing all the fireworks over the water was a magical experience :)
It was meticulously clean inside, the appliances were nice and new, the a/c cooled it down quickly & wi-fi worked great! The shower was really big & water pressure was fine. The huge windows lit the whole place nicely & we rarely used the lights. It's cozy & hip, perfect for a couple wanting some relaxation! (tip: spiders build FAST outside of the cabin. We took the broom to the porch/chairs the first day & there were already webs the next morning)
You pull up right next to the cabin, which only has neighbors on one side. The porch is very secluded and overhangs the water. There's a few steps down to the dock, which is very well-maintained. We swam & fished off the dock - it's a little weedy for swimming, but we caught many bluegill and one big bass! (tip: fishing is best at night, we didn't even get nibbles during the day!)
The cabin is at an intersection right across from Zorbaz. We were there for the 4th and while it was busier, it never got too noisy outside and we couldn't hear anything inside (with the windows closed). Zorbaz was pricey, but it was fun to just walk across the street for pick up, and eat on our porch! (tip: Zorbaz has a big multi-dock next door that people park their boats at to go eat. For the most part is was fine, but because of the holiday, some boaters weren't as considerate and played their music very loud).
We checked out some swimming holes (Little Detroit Lake has a lovely sandy beach), a couple restaurants (visit BJ's BBQ shack w/mini golf), the Flea Market (open Sat/Sun), and only 20 min to Wal-Mart for last-minute purchases. (tip: there wasn't much downtown, so be prepared to look at surrounding areas - some parks require a day pass, but they're only a few bucks).
Jan was so lovely to work with & was a GREAT communicator! She even sent us information about the holiday festivities without us asking! There's an electronic entry (no key), which was SUPER convenient. One night I emailed notifying her of some loose steps by the dock, and her handyman fixed it the next morning! We also met her friendly cleaner, making this team AWESOME!
The cabin's on the market, but hope it's still around for us to come back to next year - we LOVED it!!! THANKS SO MUCH, JAN!!! :)
Very nice and cozy cabin. Totally remodeled. Bed is comfortable. Really close to Zorbaz, just across the street.
We had a great time at this property, We originally planned for just two of us, but our teenage daughter decided to come along at the last minute. This worked out fine, but it was a little cramped with 3 adult size people. Bringing a small child along would be no trouble at all in my opinion.
The cabin matches the photos and description. The deck and dock are fabulous. Swimming off the dock was good - sandy bottom with some weeds, but nothing this Minnesota native couldn't handle. The kayak was fun, and the cabin had several life jackets available. Kitchen was fully functional, we cooked several meals there. Large charcoal grill was also great.
One thing to be aware of is that the property sits on a small plot, and is on a 40 mph road near an intersection, so there is only a very small lawn. No issue for us, but if you bring a kid that needs a lot of outdoor space, this may not be the place.
Zorbaz is right there. Pizza is good. Mexican food is passable. Beer selection good. On Friday and Saturday you can faintly hear music in the cabin - other nights we did not notice it.
It was unseasonably cold while we were there, so we spent a lot of time checking out the sites in the area. We really enjoyed these, so I list them for the benefit of anyone else that may visit.
Maplewood State Park - 30 min - Nice swimming beach and hiking. This is a large state park and includes some hills and nice vistas.
Bufallo River State Park - ~50 min - Really nice man made swimming hole. Several very pretty prairie and river hikes with very small elevation changes.
Itasca State Park - ~ 1 hour 20 min - Mississippi headwaters are a must, and tons of other stuff to do.
Detroit Lakes Public Beach - 25 min - Really fabulous sandy mile long beach with a bunch of restaurants, boat rental, etc.
Detroit Lakes Shooping - 25 min - Washington Street has a bunch of nice shops, and a really nice independent book store - we shopped there twice. We happened to be there during "crazy days", so the street was blocked off with vendors who were out in force with deals.
Buffalo River Winery - 40 minutes - Very nice property and tasting room. We just came for the wine but they have events there like live music etc on some days.
Pelican Rapids - 20 minutes - Worlds largest pelican in a really neat spot by the dam in town. Memorial Park wraps around the river/dam/pond and has a nice pedestrian suspension bridge. It was a nice spot.
Overall - this rental was a great value
This little cabin is nicely appointed with modern conveniences in a rustic setting. The yard is small, but we were there to be on the water. Pelican Lake is a large lake best enjoyed with a boat. We spent most of our time on the dock and the deck. It was nice to have the kayak available to use. The water is clear and there was plenty of nature to see and enjoy. This property is located at a fairly busy intersection. However, it is also conveniently located to the Pelican Lake public access (a few hundred feet away), Detroit Lakes is 15 minutes away, the Cormorant Inn and Cormorant Store are only a mile away, and Zorbaz is right across the street. This is a fantastic area to enjoy a vacation. You will not find nicer people anywhere.
