Our family loves this place; it is our dream home. Encinitas (Leucadia) is a great area for taking walks and enjoying perfect weather and great sunsets with every dinner. We picked this area because it is so unique: close to the beaches, located on a hill with a wide panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. My wife loves the ocean view, the sound of water fountains, and all the windows looking out onto the greenery, palm trees, and the nightly sunsets. Nearby, there are lots of coffee houses and unique shops along Pacific Coast Highway, some great golf courses, lots of nearby walking trails, yoga and massage, restaurants, wine bars, and free live music, and there is fun for the family (Legoland, Disneyland, etc.). No traffic, no noise, and some great neighbors that you'll meet only when you take a walk.

** no longer available for rent **This is a unique one-story home built by an architect for his family. It has lots of Frank Lloyd Wright touches. It is wheelchair friendly with wide doors and halls. It is near Pacific Coast Highway, 1 mile from Batiquitos Lagoon (great nature walks), 3 miles from Legoland, 2 miles from Carlsbad State Beach, 3 miles from the Flower Fields, close to the best beaches and surfing in the country, 7 miles to Del Mar Racetrack, and located on a quiet street with no through traffic. We have made it to Disneyland in 1 hour (leave early).
We are about 2 miles from the Coaster train station - great for seeing Southern Calif.
What else? Family Board games, XM radio, PC with wireless high-speed Internet, beutiful hardwood floors and a piano. Central heating and air conditioning. Got kids/grandma, yet need a date night out?:
If you have kids or an elderly parent, there is a certified background-checked professional caretaker (middle-aged experienced woman with extensive references) living in a granny flat on the property (separate building) and available to help out evenings and weekends... that means you can go out on dates, knowing that the kid(s) are in good hands. The Caretaker enjoys doing crafts, arts, and outdoor games with kids. She is there to help, if needed. Otherwise, you might not ever see her or hear her. She will give you total privacy, but Kathy is there (for hire) if you need her services. She is gone most days, though - nights and weekends need to be scheduled with the popular local gal.
P.S. We love this luxury: you come home late from worry-free date night to find the kids fed and in their beds asleep! Every couple needs time alone on a date. (date tip: Jack Temption, who wrote many hits for the Eagles, plays live music 2 miles away in a cool restaurant on the Coast).
