Excellent value and away from the crowds.

Let me start off by saying I just finished my second stay at Max and Tracey’s place and am having a hard time believing Tim from Wichita stayed in the same place. The first time I stayed in the Windward Suite and this time I stayed in the Leeward suite. As another reviewer said this is not your sterile resort experience. If that’s what you expect, then Kihei, Wailea or Kaanapali is for you. If not, then you’ll be at a place that is off the beaten tourist path, close to the wonderfully quirky towns of Hai’ku (you have to try Tuk Tuk if you like Thai food) and Pa’ia, magnificent beaches, Jaws, Ho’okipa, a spectacular farmer’s market, Maui’s beautiful upcountry, Haleakala, Hana - the list goes on and on.

The place is exactly as advertised. It is not a luxurious studio, but perfectly functional, clean and adequate for a great vacation, again assuming you are not looking for a resort experience. There are geckos (lizards) inside – Hawaiians consider them to be good luck. They eat the bugs. Smelled of mold? All I smelled was the Gardenias placed by the bed. The property is amazing, filled with fruit trees, a gulch and spectacular views of the Pacific and a nice walk to the end of the road with views of the North Shore’s cliffs.

Max and Tracey (and Buttercup) are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Any problems are quickly taken care of. For example, one time there was no laundry detergent. Within 15 minutes, Max had some there.

Maui is expensive. You will not find a better deal for $95/night – I've stayed in some at this price point and they are not as nice. And the place is legal and permitted, something you want to be sure of if you want to have a place to stay when you arrive.

I’ll be back for another visit in a couple of months.

Nice People

  • 1 of 5
Let me start off by saying the owners were very, very nice people. They were friendly, helpful and willing to share fresh fruit harvested on their property. Its hard for me to write this review because THEY were great. However I have to be honest in this review because its all about YOU, the next renter. Its quiet, secluded, and away from the touristy crowds. Its location is perfect for sightseeing that portion of the island, including Hana, the crater, Paia, and the Lihuie area. Now for the bad news. There is no dresser so you will literally be living out of your suit case. No place to set your suitcases so we put ours on dining table and ate outside. The walls are dirty, there is barely enough room on bathroom vanity to put a couple of tooth brushes and no shelves. Toaster and coffee pot look like they came from the landfill. Refrigerator was small and dirty inside. The place reeked of mold, even with all the windows open you could still smell it. What ever you do, don't remove the bed linens and look at mattress. It will gross you out. Lots of ants and lizards (inside) and in the laundry closet (outside). I would say this is more like $35 a night room. We found much, much better and cleaner in Kihei for $55 per night.

Owner's Response: This is a rebuttal to Mr. Tim from Wichita.
Mr Tim and his wife stated with us for 6 nights departing here May 4th. On May 3rd Mr. Tim left a note in our guest book from that cottage. I'll print it here verbatim.
May 3rd, 2014
“Mahalo Tracey and Max. We have had a very relaxing stay. We had the “rainy day blues” x 4 days. There is a lizard(gecko) living with us and he can be very loud.
For all visitors please go to the Sheraton (pink Hotel) on beach past Lahaina for Dukes Resturant on the beach. Have dessert called Hula Pie. Unreal. Hana Road is beautiful. Enjoy the beauty of this side of the Island., Thank you, Tim and Sheryl, Wichita, Kansas”
11 days later Mr. Tim decided to post a different review on my VRBO site as you can see. First of all, most of his accusations are totally false. My wife and I built our home here in 1995 and built the cottage in 2000. We live here and are owner / operators of this B & B. We are proud of our business and provide clean, comfortable lodging with a beautiful Ocean view at an affordable rate. We have a wonderful cleaning lady that has been with us for years and is like family to us now.
There is a large closet w/ a lot of wire shelving, cloths hangers and luggage storage. There is no need to put suitcases any where else. The walls are not dirty. They are painted w/ a simi-gloss paint that cleans easily and are washed regularly. The bathroom vanity is small but there is room for personal cosmetics and there are drawers for storage. The toaster and coffee maker are not new but are perfectly fine. The refrigerators (2 ) 1 medium and 1 small under counter type are both clean and functioning fine. Mr. white was aware of the fridge sizes as per a previous phone conversation I had with him before arrival. Both are cleaned after each guest departs.
The month of April was one of the wettest on record. It rained all month. We have ant and roach “bait traps) under stove and fridge like most people. We do not use tons of pesticides here which our guests w/ children. Bugs are not a problem. There is NO reek of mold and the mattress is not new but is firm, clean and smell fine.
Once again, we are very proud of our lodgings here and 99.85% of our guests are too. Mr. Tim never once during his stay with us, came forward to express any dislikes about ANY issues.
Customer satisfaction is what this business is all about. That is why we have so many repeat clients.
This ain't Kansas Dorothy...

Peaceful, quiet, great location!

  • 4 of 5
We absolutely loved our stay. We were here for a total of 16 days in the Windward Studio. It was so quiet, we slept with all the windows open every night. All you could hear were the birds & geckos! Easy to find, and only 40min drive to busy Kihei. We usually ate breakfast, packed lunch to take with us, and bbq'ed supper when we got back for the day. There are coolers, lawn chairs, boogy boards, beach towels for your use which was great! Max & Tracey were great for answering questions, and Max even took us snorkeling at Olowalu Reef!! It was a highlight of our trip, we swam with 11 turtles that day!! We paid to go with Pacific Whale Watch to the same place and seen none! We spent time in Lahaina, Kihei and drove around the entire island but was nice to come back to the quiet cottage each night! Lots of fresh fruit on the property to pick, and Max showed us some unique things like Jack Fruit which is huge! It's kinda slimy almost the color of a mango inside and tastes like Juicy Fruit gum! Very different!! There were apple bananas, papayas, oranges, coconuts, and others that I've forgotten the names for. We would definetly stay again! Buttercup was the official greeter, always wagging her tail and happy to see us when we got home! I would highly recommend staying here, we really enjoyed our entire vacation! Keep your eyes open for geckos, kameleons, preying mantis, walking sticks and a variety of birds! Being February, we could actually see Humpbacks breaching right from the deck! We went on a few tours, and seen so many humpbacks it was amazing!! Enjoy your vacation :)

All about the view

  • 3 of 5
There are some great things about this property that others have noted, namely the view, the fresh fruit and Buttercup! It is also a great location to serve as a base for exploring the island in all directions. The cottage, itself, is clean and, always a nice treat, the bed is very comfy and the shower is great.

One thing to be noted: the photos are not accurate. There is no stove in this property. There are two burners and a toaster oven. When we got there the place also did not have a DVD player or CD player but the owner brought us new ones three days later. He is very nice, as others have noted.

The biggest downer about the place is that it was really noisy. It's a duplex and the walls allow TV noise, conversation, etc from the other side. I know it says that has been remedied but it really needs some more work. The cottage is also in close proximity to the owner's house so you will hear phone conversations, dinner guests, etc. The view is so nice, though, you might not care!

We did not find some basics we usually find in places like this, eg a bar of soap, a pen, salt, some sturdy hangers, more than two spoons. Also, we could have benefitted from a sheet explaining things like where the washing machine is (bring your own laundry detergent, also) or where to get fruit on the property.

For us, there were some things that were a bummer but we had a great time and the cottage was a nice place to be in many ways.

Quiet and beautiful Stay

  • 5 of 5
Max and Tracey have an absolutely beautiful property. If you like quiet surroundings away from crowded tourist places, then this is the rental for you! Haiku is a quaint little town with friendly people and it is a great place to set up your base and visit the entire gorgeous island of Maui. The ocean view here is fabulous and the fruit from the property is delicious. I miss it everyday. One of the best features about this property is Buttercup, Max and Tracey's adorable yellow lab. She greeted us each morning as well as after each of our daily adventures. We are already planning our next visit and I would recommend this rental to anyone! Patti and Rob Nichols, Phoenix,Az

Laid back Aloha in a beautiful, local setting...

  • 5 of 5
Just got back from nearly 2 weeks at this quiet Local paradise. We stayed in the Studio apartment, and though I would call it "rustic" -- just to make sure people don't mistake this for some sterilized resort setting -- because staying here is staying at someone's home, and the grounds are kept nicely groomed and abound with fruit trees.

Buttercup, the dog, greets you most mornings, and sits at the doorway until well past sunset. I welcomed her visits! The local doves and Myna birds wake you with a pleasant song. The palms whisper constantly, the ocean view is lovely. While the Studio isn't the lap of luxury (for that you'll pay twice the cost), for those of us seeking a super-local experience, that is exactly what we got; close to Ho'okipa beach, Paia, Makawao and the famous Hana Highway, it was as far from the bustling tourist strip in both time, essence and drive-time as we could get (almost), and that is exactly what we wanted. I came back to the hectic Bay Area refreshed, serene, and thankful for Tracey's Aloha. Never met Max, but his papaya trees are in full fruit at the moment, just a couple days short of my enjoying them. Oh well, the citrus, avocados (which also didn't want to be ripe during my visit) and even a prolific pepper tree (which I carefully hulled and cracked for an amazing Maui beef and cracked pepper stir fry one night) make for a magical get away from everything -- this isn't tourism; it's localism. I highly recommend it.

I also recommend taking advantage of this location to explore the Maui most tourists don't have time to visit, everything East, North and Upcountry -- so many local stores, restaurants, farms and farmstands, so much Aloha you won't miss the hoards of tourists in West Maui, even though you can get that, too, in a relatively short drive. You are so close to the Hana road, you have ample time to drive the whole route and see everything along the way. You're also close to Kahului, where all major shopping and malls are located. Nothing sells this area better than the lush foliage and beautiful, friendly people.
