My wife and I spent an indescribable eight days at “The Penthouse.” Everything about it was ideal. Compliments to the owner, Mary Ann, and her supporting team (“Junior,” our local contact for everything; “Yvette,” our respectful and caring housekeeper, and “Kevin,” our rental car provider) for making the visit so special. From the initial email contact with Mary Ann, through to our reluctant departure, everything was handled with such style and distinction that it was remarkable. Our comments, in no particular order:
We spent more of our onsite waking time on the porch than indoors, and almost always had the patio doors opened fully. The porch provides privacy and a stunning view. Other locations on the island have their views of St Maarten, but we preferred ours of nothing but blue waters and waves breaking over shoals.
We both loved the bathroom/shower room/dressing room’s size and openness. It pleasingly complements the rest of the home. The space is more than ample for two.
The kitchen provided everything that we needed. We chose to make our own morning meals from goodies obtained from nearby “Le Bon Pain”, and the grocery store (“Best Buy” was our store of choice.)
We echo another reviewer’s praise of the bed’s comfort. This is very important, and one of us is a little “fussy” about beds other than his own. (Oops, I guess I just confessed which one I am.) We will miss the sounds of the breezes, the roosters, the sea, and even the rain. A wonderful feature of the entire penthouse is the exposed ceiling beams of natural native white cedar which contributes to the airy ambiance.
The property is gated, which gives a feel of exclusivity; this is yet another sign of the privacy afforded by the location. The property is exquisitely landscaped and obviously maintained on a constant basis.
The walk to Shoal Bay Beach is easy and requires foot coverings. Once you descend to the beach, your sandals can be removed until returning.
Countless times we walked to SBE to swim/snorkel/lime. Our favorite of the beach bars was “Madeariman” with the amiable Janette tending. Her version of the ubiquitous Rum Punch was the best and most palatable. Gwen’s version was just too much alcohol for our taste; not to say it wasn’t good. To reemphasize, the “busy” part of SBE was an enjoyable walk along the primarily deserted spectacular beach. In summary, we highly recommend this property. We will return as soon as possible.
