The 650 acre ranch upon which skyhouse is located, is situated between the Pacific Ocean of Los Osos and San Luis Obispo, (a 30 min. drive from SLO and a 20 minute drive from Los Osos) in the Irish foothills at the very end of Clark Valley road. The ranch is a rugged, oak covered, hilly piece of land, with pockets (approximately 14 acres) of organic sub-tropical fruit orchards and fields (including feijoas, passion fruit, African horned melons, pepino melons, persimmons, Asian pears) and all organic unusual vegetable varieties including blue potatoes, tomatillos, blue and green corn, yacon and heirloom tomatoes. There are free roaming horses and Texas Longhorns and plenty of wildlife including: red-tail hawk, quail, owl, bobcat, coyote, raccoon, fox, wild boar, deer, the illusive mountain lion and the very occasional black bear.
While the biggest lure of Sky House is to relax in its serene surrounding with the awe-inspiring views, activities on the ranch include guided hikes along the 650 acre piece of land ranging from creek walks to hikes up to a manzanita lined ridge and guided agricultural tours of the organic farm with walks in the various orchards and fields.
Please indicate before or just upon arrival if you would for sure like a tour of the ranch so we can plan ahead. Otherwise, give a call during your stay to see if anyone has time to give a tour, or can manage a few visitors in the field during work hours, and possibly show you around elsewhere. (Tours are donation based, we recommend $5 per person)
Outside the ranch, activities in the central coast range from visits to the nearby beautiful state park of Montana de Oro (Los Osos), surfing in many a destination along the Pacific ocean (we can guide you as to where the surf in good and less trafficked and maybe even accompany you…), wine tasting amongst the rough 200 or so wineries of the area, elephant seal gazing in San Simeon, and tours of Hearst Castle, whalewatching off Morro Bay harbor, visits to the local farmers markets where we may be selling our own organic produce, site-seeing in the local beach towns of Los Osos, Morro Bay, and Cayucos and tours to San Luis Obispo with good dining in all of the above mentioned towns (we will gladly give recommendations).

About Lauri Sowa
The Swift Family lived permanently at Sky House for fourteen years and the three children were born and raised here on Bear Creek Ranch. The son is busy developing an organic muesli company in San Luis Obispo out of his passion for health and fitness. As he is a local resident, you may be greeted by him at Sky House. One of the daughters is studying law in Portland, Oregon and tending to her backyard as she would on the ranch with fruit trees and a flock of chickens. The other daughter is working on her masters in writing and living part time in the Black Hills of South Dakota, spending her afternoons hiking amidst bison instead of the famililar long horn cattle that roam the ranch. The family often enjjoys the old ranch headquarters at the end of the valley. The parents reside along the Pacific shoreline in the neighboring town of Cayucos.
Our long-term vision is for the ranch to be self-sustainable ecologically and economically. Sharing the cherished Sky House is part of this process. Apart from our dedication to and love of the ranch, we are collectively passionate about issues ranging from conservation of biodiversity to the rights of indigenous peoples and rural farmers. When not here, we are likely to be somewhere else on this planet working in the context of these issues or embracing different places and cultures.

What makes this house unique
Sky House at Bear Creek Ranch has an incredibly unique location on the ranch, in its own realm on the top of the hill with some of the most dynamic views in SLO county. One can sit and enjoy the view, swim in the pool or wander the trails around the ranch and even visit the fields and orchards. One can go into town, to Morro Bay, Los Osos or San Luis Obispo, which are really all just around the corner, a mere 20-30 minute drive. Yet once back on the hilltop one will feel secluded and free from the bustle of town, so close but so far below. Sky House is an incredible mix of contrasts available to enjoy.
