As a married couple, one side is American and the other side is British which partly may explain why we have long had a eccentric thirst for discovering and experiencing exciting foreign places. We have been blessed with the opportunity to live in some of the most beautiful spots on this planet. We resided in Singapore for several decades and progressively built homes in Bali, Australia, Singapore and the United States. We also bought land in Myanmar (the old Burma), only to find out that we could never own land in this country.
Heather Pedersen purchased this house in 1989
In 1989, we visited an estate called Punta Del Burro, just 30 miles north of Puerta Vallarta. We walked to the highest point on the beach front which gave us a breathtaking 180 degree scan of Banderas Bay and promptly bought the lot, all 2 acres of it. A year later, we built our dream Mexican home and made a promise to ourselves that we have kept to this day -- we would retain it as a rare nature experience on the ocean, and our most frequent visitors -- exotic tropical birds and pelicans -- are pleased that we have.
If you like sports, there is a large menu: great surfing, snorkeling, sailing, fishing, tennis, table tennis, and beach volleyball.
If you like beaches, you just go down 30 steps and you are there. There is also a huge 2 mile long sandy beach just 4 minutes drive away.
If you like restaurant and bars, you have the towns of Punta del Mita, La Cruz, Bucerias, and Sayulita all within a 30 minutes drive.
If you like to just laze around, there are upteen sun decks and shaded retreats to enjoy in the large, lush, tropical gardens
This was our first stay at Hacienda Alegre and it far exceeded our expectations! We were a family of 10 and enjoyed all the options for accommodations allowing all to have a comfortable and pleasant stay. The location was amazing and enjoyed the beachfront area daily. The owners have thought out every detail as we had plenty of beach chairs, boogie boards and even some extra water shoes to enhance our time at the beach. The staff at the house was such a pleasure to interact with. Our rooms were meticulously cleaned daily, fresh towels always ready at the pool, and our chef Carlos kept us well fed from breakfast to dinner! We enjoyed spending time at the pool, playing ping pong and even hitting a few tennis balls. The beauty of the grounds was a delight around every corner or path that we took. We hope to return again and highly recommend Hacienda Alegre for your stay in the Punta del Burro area.
Staying at the Batey’s home in Mexico is like staying at a pampered, luxurious, over the top beautiful and incredibly relaxing hide-a-way. I have stayed there on many occasions as a couple with my husband Gary, as a sister on a sister trip, as a grandma with children and grandchildren, with girlfriends and even by myself as a way of getting away. The view from the patio is incredible and listening to the breaking waves provides such a wonderful backdrop for reading or sleeping! The bedrooms are peaceful and the grounds magnificent. The Batey’s are both artists with incredible and understated taste. In the past, there we have used several cooks or it is very easy to go to the punta mita restaurants which are 5 minutes away. The beach is ok, but there is a wonderful walking beach and stroll in the water beach 5 minutes away. My husband and I have traveled throughout the world and Hacienda Alegre is still our favorite retreat. If you have a chance, don't pass up the opportunity of a lifetime to stay at Hacienda Alegre!
We rent a lot of vacation homes, but this experience was sheer delight. The owners, the staff including the manager here, the well maintained grounds, the lovely rooms, the view and the diversions could not have been better. Finally a truly relaxing vacation. There is no point in leaving the hacienda. We also made a brilliant decision by hiring Carlos the chef full-time for the week, as he spoiled us silly with his creations and perfect service. (Contact the owners or me for his contact info.) Yes, it's hot in July but we had a terrific time.
My husband & I have stayed here 4 different times, sometimes it's just us and other times we've brought friends to enjoy the amazing home, gardens, sunsets, beach walks, etc....
Set off the main road down a cobblestone drive, once you enter through the gated neighborhood the drive to Hacienda Alegre passes beautiful homes and stunning flowers and plants along the road. It feels very safe and well cared for.
The grounds of this home are full of nooks and crannies where you can wander, sit and read a book, meditate or just enjoy the different plants and flowers.
The main house is great for entertaining a group or just lazing about. You'll find yourself hanging on the main back deck overlooking the ocean...big dining tables, lots of seating, spectacular views.
Stairs lead down to the secluded beach where you can enjoy a beautiful walk, surf, or just float in the waves. Water shoes are advised.
Below the main house is a sleeping space with 2 bedrooms and it's own kitchen and patio so privacy for individual couples or families is no problem.
Similarly, a separate guest house is completely functioning for a family or a few friends with 2 more bedrooms, kitchen, living room, patio etc....
The pool is beautiful, clean, lots of chairs, lounges, towels, ping pong table, supplied by the owner. An additional 2 rooms out by the pool, but we have never needed to stay in these...they are simple and clean. Just walking the short distance from the main house to the pool is a pleasure as the grounds are planted like a tropical wonderland! Tennis court is in mint condition! The kids will LOVE this space!
The staff is wonderful. Their english is not great but we have never had any issues understanding each other. The manager of the property who is regularly available speaks great english. The cook will make whatever you ask for, but specializes in traditional Mexican dishes with out-of-this-world sauces!
The owners were easy to deal with!
Renting a car is a good idea but not necessary. Heading into Bucerias or Saulita for lunch or dinner is a fun outing from the house (if you ever want to leave!). The Mega grocery store or WalMart are an easy 20 minute drive so you can stock up on supplies.
This feels old school Mexico in an updated and luxurious environment. This is not the touristy hotel filled environment of much of Mexico. You can relax, enjoy friends and family, nature and the most unbelievable stars off the deck you have ever seen!
I went to Hacienda Alegre for 2 weeks in February. The website description and photos, as beautiful as they are, do not even do the property justice. It is the most beautiful place I have ever been, and I've been to many wonderful places. If you have a chance to go there, you will never regret, and will always cherish, the experience. I was there for 2 weeks--the first with 2 families consisting of grandparents (in their 60s), parents (in their 30s and 40s) and children from ages 2 to 14. There were a million things to do that were fun for all ages. We mainly stayed at the property except for short excursions to Punta Mita and surrounds, PV, and the most beautiful swimming beach about a mile away. Activities on the property included paddleboarding, swimming, tennis, lots of eating (the staff was incredible), and lots of relaxing. After a week, the younger group left and 4 couples arrived. It was more of the wonderful same except we added in several rounds of golf (lots of really nice, nearby courses). The property is so beautiful, so well maintained, so clean and friendly, the surrounds so interesting, the entire group to a person could not imagine a better vacation. It is a 5 star plus experience. Go!!!
We had the pleasure of spending the Christmas holiday with our whole family (from ages 67 to 4 years old) at this magical location. Although the pictures look beautiful, they cannot do it justice!! We got full use of the pool area and tennis courts and the gardens are beautiful and immaculately kept. There was plenty of room for all of us and the rooms were first rate. The house staff were very helpful and friendly and went out of their way to accommodate our every wish - from amazing meals, to margaritas and appetizers by the pool, to a New Year's Eve bonfire and fireworks on the beach and, of course, the burro rides!! The homemade salsa and guacamole were amazing (we had them every day) and the fish tacos are to die for!! Thanks to Pablo, Martha, Ellie and Roman in particular, for all their assistance in making this a vacation of a lifetime!! Everythng was so perfect, we never left the property for the 10 days!!
