About Diane Stevenson

I am a Cath Lab and ICU RN. Due to life circumstance, began vacation renting 2 of my homes a few years ago and find that I love it. It is a pleasure to share my unique homes. Thanks to all that come to them. I hope that all my guests enjoy them as much as I have.

Diane Stevenson purchased this house in 1989

Why Diane Stevenson chose Grass Valley

This was our family home. My husband and I built it. It is not a 'kit'. He designed it and with a good bit of blood, sweat and tears, it was built with the care of the quality craftsman that he is. We raised our son here. He grew up playing in the creek and hiking in the woods. He is now 25 and with the economy the way it is, renting this home to nice folks helps us finance his education. It is a lovely home in a lovely location. We hope you enjoy staying in it as much as we enjoyed living in it for all those years. Diane Foley Stevenson (OWNER)

What makes this house unique

I love the creek and hiking in the woods. Follow the trail across the creek and up to the top of the property where you will enjoy a spectacular sunset. Walking into the house is like something magical. It really is a unique and special place to spend some well-deserved downtime.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi...I'm the owner and I have just had the pleasure of having my first guests this last weekend. I only recently listed my house on vrbo and I look forward to having many guests who enjoy their stay as much as the first ones have.

Sincerely,

Diane Stevenson

Our Log Home Vacation

  • 5 of 5
July 19, 2014
Dear Diane,
I promised I would write about our stay in your log home, for I truly believe it is a home, not a house. I felt that as soon as I walked through the door on July 2. As I sit by our pool today and listen to the water I remember sitting in your backyard and listening to the creek….
It really began a year ago when I contacted you about renting your home for my family. I was excited about the upcoming wedding of my son that was to take place on July 5, 2014 at Squirrel Tree Ranch. Little did I know when you and I made arrangements via email and phone, that my family’s stay at your log home would be so incredible.
That first night, Wednesday, July 2, it was just my husband and me. As soon as I opened the door I felt embraced….the fragrant smell….the soothing earth tones….the high ceilings and wooden floors….the comfy chairs….the long wooden dining table that would accommodate all 10 of us….the bedrooms complete with bathrobes and fluffy pillows….the bathrooms with a step stool for my grandchildren and hair dryers for my daughter and me….the games…movies…ping pong table….the deck and barbecue…and the back yard where you could sit and relax into the silence….for the adventurous….you could open the gate and rock hop across the creek…catch tadpoles….walk the wooden plank to the other side and daringly swing on the rope and drop into the creek.
While my husband and I enjoyed the quiet of that first night, when our children and grandchildren arrived on Thursday, new adventures began and treasured memories were made. The patter of little feet and the voices of our grandchildren calling for Nahni and Papa to come fix breakfast…..their excitement upon discovering the hammocks and the creek and rope swing…celebrating Kayden’s 8th birthday on the 4th of July, complete with streamers draped on those high ceilings and cake and ice cream at the kitchen table.
On Saturday, one of the photographers came to take pictures of our son getting ready for his wedding….so many beautiful pictures and candid shots of Matthew with his nieces and nephews…it was so much fun to see and again the log home provided the perfect setting for so many wonderful and playful pictures!
On Sunday some of my immediate family moved out and my sister and brother and their spouses moved in. Again your home welcomed this “adult” gang …. The last night I stayed by myself and immersed myself into the quiet...a magnificent way to end an incredible 7 days!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Elaine, for your wonderful review of my log home near Grass Valley. It is always a pleasure to rent it to families coming to the area for a wedding. I am so pleased that you were so comfortable and that you enjoyed yourselves so much. I try very hard to provide everything for fun and comfort. I hope you will consider coming again for a family vacation! You would be very welcome! My best to Matt and Kelly!

Overall it was good

  • 4 of 5
The house is large and comfortable, however, having only two bathrooms for such a large number of people was a challenge as the upstairs bathroom ensuite did not have a separate door, anyone using it would have to make sure the bedroom was not being used. Also the owner called us to complain as we had guests over and a neighbor had phoned her to say there were extra cars there and they interrupted our evening with our friends making it uncomfortable for our visitors. Also the owner had arranged for a fridge to be delivered while we were there after she had told me she would make sure it was delivered after we had left. The house was clean and tidy but a bit tired, the kitchen drawers just about fell out when we opened them and there was no available cupboards for our food, so we left it on the counters as all the cupboards were full of dishes etc. Overall it was a nice place to stay and very convenient as we were attending a family wedding on the same street. The main bathroom was not great, could use some investment in fixing it up, and the upstairs toilet was not secured properly so it moved when you sat on it - also - there is no insulation between the floors so the guests in the main floor bedroom can hear the upstairs guests using the washroom, no privacy at all. You might as well have them in the room with you. Not great when you are using the bathroom at night.

Owner's Response: I appreciate guest comments as they allow me the opportunity to see my property through someone else's eyes.

These guests came for a family wedding - a much larger group than I generally allow at this house (13 instead of 8). I can see how they may have appreciated another bathroom. I will, however, place a door on the master bathroom as this is a good suggestion. The main floor bathroom was recently remodeled but I think I will replace the antique oak commode with something more modern - another good suggestion.

The phone call was a result of a large gathering at the house without my knowledge. My home is in a country neighborhood and I respect my neighbor's by knowing the purpose for which my home is being used. Large parties are not appropriate nor are they allowed (without my permission). I do have another vacation rental home where I do allow parties. I did not ask the visitors to leave.

I had arranged for the fridge to be delivered after the guests left. The delivery man made a mistake and delivered it too early. He was sent away and rescheduled. I apologized to the guests for this interruption.

I will look at and repair the drawer. There are many cupboards in the kitchen and I will clean out more of them so there is even more space for guests to place their food. I will also check and repair the toilet.

This is useful information for me, as it allows me to improve my vacation home. It is and always has been my intention to provide a comfortable and enjoyable get-away for my guests.

This house was my family home and I take great pride in it. Any opportunity for improvement is good. Thank you!

Outstanding Getaway

  • 5 of 5
The Log House is wonderful. It had lots of room, was very clean and well stocked. Enjoyed the hot tub. Had a great time playing ping pong and listening to the stream. Was not far to Grass Valley for groceries and dinner the first night. We really enjoyed the openness of the house. Our dog had a great time, too. Plan to make this a regular getaway spot.

Log House in Grass Valley

  • 3 of 5
The Log House was very clean and is on a small stream. We were disappointed that the house did not provide any outside privacy. The neighbors to the right and left are very close and there are no natural barriers between them and the log house. The property is on a long and narrow lot. Great internet at the house for those needing to be plugged in and the owner is extremely responsive.

Fabulous cabin

  • 5 of 5
We had a fabulous time during our week-long stay at the cabin. We had a blast playing ping pong, relaxing in the hammocks in the backyard and panning for a little gold in the creek. The house was clean and well stocked with everything.
The only very minor cons that I have are:
1.) It is a bit of a non-direct route from the main highway. We got a bit confused/turned around a few times. But it's not too bad.
2.) Neighbors are very nearby. No problems with them though. If you're looking for privacy in the backyard, though, it's not there.
2.) The hot tub is small and only fits about three people.

loved it; perfect for my two kids and me

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful time staying at the log house. It was a nice, quiet, comfortable turnkey place for my two young daughters and me to explore gold country. What I liked:
- just bring your groceries and personals, and the house has everything else. Comfortable kitchen, TV and wifi, plenty of sheets and towels. they even thoughtfully have the wood stove stocked. my kids were comfortable right away and i was cooking dinner within an hour of walking in.
- the place is really quiet. the road outside is sort of a highway, but there's not a lot of traffic, and either way, somehow the place is quiet and feels very private.
- the backyard and down by the river is fun for the kids. would be more fun in the summer, because i think you could dip into the water.
- The owner is very responsive. I had some trouble switching on the dvd player, and she called me within minutes of getting my email.
- the layout of the house is perfect for a family. big open family room, but with quiet and private bedrooms. we live in an apartment in san francisco so it felt huge to us.

It's basically a nice, cozy, fully functional house right when you walk in. There's literally nothing I can think of that I wish was different. I'd definitely stay there again or recommend it to someone else.
