Overview

Woodstock House Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, sleeps 6.

Central frame is an updated 1820's barn, preserving original details while introducing modern, clean lines. A loft space on the second floor houses the master bedroom (queen) with a separate sitting area, in addition to a separate (double) bedroom and full bath. The downstairs has an open flow, with a newly-renovated galley kitchen, informal and formal dining areas, and a living room that includes an old fireplace made of round stones. This floor also has a bedroom (2 twins) overlooking rock outcropping, a small nursery, a mudroom, a laundry area, and a full bath.

The house works well for people with and without children. It is peaceful and quiet. It is less than 1/2 a mile from town, but also in a wooded area so you feel you are away. Behind the house is a rushing stream, a bridge (on our property), and a yard suitable for playing or relaxing.

The house is 1600 sq. ft, all useful and pleasant. It can be accessed by bus from NYC.

Beautiful, high quality home - perfect for Woodsto

  • 5 of 5
This is a really lovely, beautifully restored house - thoughtfully and tastefully set out. There is a lovely little stream in the garden - and that, combined with sweeping up the fall leaves - kept our children happy for hours without ever leaving the property!

The location is very convenient for Woodstock - an easy walk into the village to avoid the traffic - and we would recommend La Cucina restaurant for a special meal out.

The house is well appointed and very comfortable, and ideal for families with a twin room and also a little nursery room with a babies cot - as well as two double rooms upstairs. There are two bathrooms, which helps when you have 6 people in the house! The heating is very efficient so we never felt a chill.

The comms before the visit were excellent and very clear, and we had no problems at all during our stay.

My only comment is that the house is most appropriate to either a single family, or to those who really know each other well. One of the bedrooms upstairs is 'open plan', which means it is not quite as private as a typical bedroom. For us that was no problem at all, and we loved the house and it's sense of history, I just think worth mentioning for those who might be looking for a house to share with friends rather than family.

One of the nicest houses we've ever stayed in - and a perfect family getaway!

Superb rustic feel with close proximity to town

  • 5 of 5
Our party of 4 adults and 1 dog spent 5 nights at this property and loved every minute. The house itself had an airy open floor plan design, with nice modern kitchen, round breakfast table and large dining table. The bedrooms were a good size and with two bathrooms couples could operate upstairs/downstairs with privacy. The open fireplace was great for the colder evenings and a great focal point for discussions. The house grounds were very pretty and you can sit outside and view nature like chipmunks running around.

The main bonus of the house is its proximity to Woodstock, about a 7 to 10 minute walk which is not too strenuous.

All in all it was a fantastic trip and we will be back again once the ski season starts up!

Amazing farm house!

The beautiful town of Woodstock has a lot to offer, from art galleries to great food and wine options. The home away from home was just what me and my family were looking for.

Great mini-vacation

  • 5 of 5
That was absolutely great and relaxing mini-vacation. We stayed 3 couples for 3 nights; house was very clean, and fully equipped. Description is totally accurate, just be prepare that “A loft space on the second floor the master bedroom (queen) with a separate sitting area” doesn't have door and basically partially open to the main house area. In our case it was OK, but if you have little kids who have to go to sleep early, - it might be a problem.
The backyard id absolutely gorgeous, big and neat, it has sitting places, grill, and the most amazing thing- a little creak with tiny fish in it. If you wish to escape from big city and relax for couple of days- it’s a great place

Simple fixes to really enhance the experience

  • 3 of 5
I'd like to say that for the most part, the home is as advertised and we had a lovely visit. I'm not one for writing negative reviews as it goes against my principals, but there are some easily fixable / housekeeping things that would make this rental property so much more enjoyable.

1. Every single dish, glass, cup, piece of flatware and utensil was dirty and had to be hand washed. Either the dishwasher is not doing well, or the soap provided is not getting the job done. The cutting boards need replacing. There was black baked-on pieces on all of the pots and pans, and the cookie sheets were greasy.

2. Pots and pans are minimal. The Le Cruset pieces above the range are unusable and completely black inside.

3. There were 4 wine glasses - many of our dinners were with a red and a white, which was inconvenient with just 4 wine glasses.

4. There were just 3 steak knives, which we realized after serving 4 steaks to 4 people.

5. There were 2 washcloths provided for 4 people. Not cool.

6. Old soap in soap dishes is just really unappealing...I don't know anyone who would want to use used soap left from strangers.

7. We were depending on an ice maker that was listed in the "amenities" so we didn't buy ice at the store....had to make another trip out to buy ice.

8. Why not just add a shower curtain to the downstairs bathroom? Make it convenient for everyone - or clearly state that the other "full" bathroom is really not a full bathroom like people are used to.

9. Fireplace flu is clogged and doesn't pull well so the room got rather smokey on a cool night we were there.

10. The upstairs bedroom with full bed just needs a dresser, a coat rack or some hooks...something where one can put their clothing.

11. The coffee grinder needs to be replaced by one that works well or doesn't take 10 minutes of really loud grinding that wakes up the whole house.

12. The floors should be washed before a new guest arrives. We followed the rules of removing our footwear (I have the same rule in my home) and yet, our feet were filthy from the floors.

13. Upgrade/update your sound system so that it's easy and enjoyable for your guests to create a lovely atmosphere while hanging out in the home.

14. Fix the upstairs shower / showerhead as it stops midway in showering and is difficult to get going again.

That's all...nothing major and pretty easy to fix to enhance greatly the experience of your guests.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your experience and concerns, as well as offering suggestions. We're so sorry to hear that you were not happy with your visit, but appreciate your feedback and the opportunity to make the house even more welcoming and comfortable for guests! I'll admit that we're surprised to hear that the dishes needed hand washing. We've never noticed that the dishwasher doesn't leave the dishes, glassware and silverware sparkling. We will certainly investigate and make sure that the dishwasher and soap are continuing to do a good job, as they have in the past. Frankly, we are also surprised to hear that you felt the kitchen was not stocked with appropriate cookware, since the set of stainless steel pots and pans includes a stockpot, steamer, 2 saucepans, a saute pan, and several frying pans of various sizes. The bakeware includes pie, cake and muffin tins, as well as a mixer, bowls and a complete set of utensils. The baking sheets are new, and we're sorry to hear that they were returned to the shelf without being properly cleaned by the previous guests. We will certainly check all cookware more carefully in the future to ensure that everything is spotless, with the understanding of course that some minor stains are permanent. Please note that the Le Cruset pot that you found in the high utility cupboard above the stove had been damaged and stored there for the owner's use only. We have now removed it from the kitchen and stored it in the owner's locked closet. Your suggestion to add more wineglasses is much-appreciated and we have doubled the number. The tub in the downstairs bathroom off the children's bedroom is described as a "kiddie tub" in our listing, and the photo clearly shows that it has a low wall and square shape. We reiterated this point to you when you inquired before booking, and assumed that you were fine with it. Unfortunately it is not possible to add a curtain and convert it into a regular shower, as you suggested. Lastly, we are surprised that you chose to build a fire in the fireplace in June. The chimney certainly does not draw well when it's warm outside, since a temperature differential to required to create a current of air. We're not surprised to hear that smoke escaped into the house, and we also noticed the ash/soot on the floors when we washed them after your visit. Again, we're so sorry that you didn't enjoy your visit as much as previous guests have, and we appreciate your helpful feedback and suggestions!

Woodstock is a charming, vibrant town with an identity that both includes and predates its ties to the 60's. Earlier in the 20th century, it drew artists to the Byrdecliffe community, and remains a center for creative expression. There are many things to do, if visitors want, from drop-in yoga and pilates classes to children's story hour at the local library to group walks. Alternately, Woodstock is an easy place to withdraw from others, into nature or other pursuits, and simply relax. It is near many other appealing towns, each with its own identity, as well as the kinds of relaxing activities that New Yorkers often miss, such as bowling, movie theaters without lines, quiet lakes, etc. etc.
